Global Underground 23: Barcelona Disc 1...........

Oh my fucking god!

What energy... surely has to be CD compilation of the year. Disc 2 is some storming progressive house, but Disc #1 is the fusion of the most amazing electronic dance music out these days.

Amazing, AMAZING breakbeats in this CD. I swear, when I am driving to it, I think I'm James Bond... it's like.. I can press the aircon button and machine guns will come out of my fender...

If you haven't bought this CD yet, it came out October 15th in North America! GET IT!

I know, I know.

I really am finding that epic breakdown BORING. I know why people are beginning to get into progressive house now. It's the most interesting music ever.. for me, I just love how the beats are so technically put together, layered over one another.

But the breaks on the first CD... just amazing. AMAZING

yeah you're right CD1 of GU23 is just amazing! the last song is pure bliss and most of the others are too! i'm not so into prog but this CD is fuckin' good!

Ian Brown - F.E.A.R. (Unklesounds Remix) - i think that's what the last song is called... AMAZING isn't it?!

Ian Brown was the frontman for the Stone Roses... cool collaboration.

The Intro is amazing, the DJ Shadow track must be the most interesting/catchy tune ive listened to for months, let the good times roll belongs to my 2002 favourite tracks, fundamental owns you, brekain on the streets and the track afterwards must be two of the PHATTEST breaks tunes ever, and the finish is fuuuccking beautiful!

The only thing that could be critiziced is the structure of the mix. Its one phat track after another with great start and great finish but still I cant sense some kind of well-thought build up

Edit: tranceseeker, for fucks sake, please do me a favour and stop polarizing between "prog lovers" and uplifting fans. And forget it, u wont get out of it with yet another lame "im just kidding", theres hardly any post were u dont seek to "boast" with ur new found love: prog house whilst making fun of the those who dont "follow the trend".

The Cds are great, very different from the typical progy progy. I didnt quite like the second track though on disk 1, the rap stuff.

YEAH!!!!! progressive sounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! btw, cd1 sounds good. not as good as 022 Dave Seaman cd1 though i love that chill ambience with slight energy in Seaman's GU wOOt wOOt!!!

WOW-This track couldn't be more perfect to give the set a true Spanish Barcelona feel. DJ Shadow owns and he's not even prog or trance or whatever.

Whether journeying through the epic trance of Sasha and Digweed or the deep house of Danny Tenaglia, the Global Underground crew, in its 23-release existence, has always been synonymous with quality. Its newest member James Lavelle, head of the trip-hop label Mo� Wax, was handed the decks to mix up the latest two-disc installment, �James Lavelle - GU023: Barcelona.�

James Lavelle�s reputation for his blinding breakbeat sets has always included a love of hip-hop. This mix varies from the traditional 4/4 beat that has marked all previous Global Underground releases; it is the meticulous construction of Lavelle�s mixes that has garnered him rave reviews as a DJ.

Disc 1 ushers us in with Lavelle�s own �Unklesounds� intro, quickly melding into the blinding �Mongrel�Meets His Maker.� A prot�g� of Lavelle�s Mo� Wax imprint, DJ Shadow�s guitar-led track is set in an unconventional yet relaxed 6/8 time structure. Its melancholy pianos lead into Leftfield�s �Dusted,� with a harsh rap vocal over slow, steady breaks. Lavelle continues to build his breakbeat-based atmosphere, reaching the Layo & Bushwacka! stomper �Let The Good Times Roll.� Its tight drum programming is one of the album�s highlights, featuring another spooky guitar riff and a simple blues vocal. After several tough breakbeat monsters, Lavelle gets moody with an unreleased mix of Ils� anthem �No Soul.� PMT�s remix showcases a bassline much heavier than the original melody, sampling the blues vocal to sorrowful bliss. Lavelle finally mellows out, unleashing his mind-blowing Unklesounds rework of indie singer Ian Brown�s �FEAR.� As gentle strings fade in, the male vocal and drum patterns kick the listener into a state of auditory ecstasy.

Disc 2�s beginning sees a return to the 4/4 kicks of house music; the layered drum patterns and deep vocal of Pitch Black�s �Underground Sound� set the tone. Techy breaks evolve from the Rennie Pilgrem & Meat Katie collaboration �Atmosphere,� easily mixing into Meat Katie�s own �Next Life.� After hip-hop laced breakbeat beasts from Uberzone & Pilgrem and an Unklesounds mix of �Dead Prez,� we trip back to the steady tribal beats of house staples Peace Division. The middle of the mix possesses a dark, funky mood brimming with male vocal samples, then suddenly the soft synths of FC Kahuna�s corker �Glitterball� emerge. Hybrid�s new track �Gravastar,� produced expressly at Lavelle�s request, exhibits their foray into demented progressive. The album concludes with an Oasis-sounding number, a downtempo vocal mix of �Doves � There Goes The Fear,� produced by, who else but Unklesounds - again, James Lavelle.

Judging by the stark contrast this Global Underground release possesses compared to its predecessors, give credit to the Cluboxed label heads for taking a chance on a new direction, and attempting to develop their sound. However, their gamble does not go unrewarded; with Lavelle�s sparkling melodies and soulful breakbeats, they�ve absolutely struck the nail on the head.

This Global Underground is absolutely fucking amazing! When I first acquired this disc I had high expectations of it, as that is what I have come to expect from a Global Underground release... and I wasn�t disappointed. It surpassed my expectations. I haven�t really listened to the second disc, seeing this first disc hasn�t left my CD player since the first time I heard it! It�s full of energy and flows together really well.

The intro...brilliant! I think it opens the disc really well. DJ Shadow�s Mongrel (Meets His Maker) is just as amazing, very atmospheric. As for the Leftfield tune with the rap, well, I actually like the rap! Which is rather surprising since I generally dislike rap. Layo and Bushwacka-Shining Through, what a mint track! And then there�s Ian Brown- Fear, a perfect track to end the disc with!

GU023 is one of my favourite GUs, fo� sho!

I'm only starting to listen to the promo now; Mongrel (Meets His Maker) is amazing! Oh my goodness if this is track 1, I'm going to have an orgasm before I hit the end.. I feel like I'm watching an hour-long movie, this.. I love GU!
