After 4 knee surgeries, 2 torn rotator cuffs, a torn hip flexor

And countless amounts of other sports related injuries, I have finally come to realize the importance of stretching and doing yoga everyday.

When I hit 30 everything changed. Those old injuries snuck back up out of nowhere. I stopped working out because I felt like shit. For the last 4 months I got back into training but drastically changed the way I work out. I focus mainly on my core my back and
My legs. Everything else is secondary. Secondly I added a crap ton of stretching and yoga. The difference on how my body feels is insane. My rotator cuffs don't hurt as much. I no longer have any backaches. I lost 25 pounds of weight. Even my legs (I used to have the tightest IT bands and hamstrings from all my knee surgeries) feel way better than they did. In soccer someone took a video of me playing a year ago and after watching it I noticed very quickly how injured I look when I run. Some girl I know snachatted me the other day of me playing soccer an the difference in the way I run now is night and day.

This is a warning to all you kids out there. You may think your invincible in your 20s, you may be in great shape and heal from injuries quick but it will catch up to you. Stretching is the most important thing you can do for yourself before
And after a workout. Treat your core and your back even more importantly than your arm shoulders and chest. Pushing exercises were always my favourites but I've learned that pulling exercises are wayyyy more important.

If you ever see that jacked guy in the gym and his posture looks like it's sunken in forward, he may look jacked but any money says he's in a world of pain.

Probably should have Added this to the work out thread but couldn't find it. I wanted
To post this because stretching and yoga is never talked
About at all. Yet it's the most important thing you can do. Being flexible while
Playing sports is 10x more
Important then strength. It'll make you quicker and unpredictable on the field or court.

You can't tell anyone anything about their health. Most people prefer to find out the hard way how their choices in their youth will affect them as they age.

Posted by OrangestO on Mar-02-2015 18:44:

I heard that even at 30, you can recoup about 90 percent of your body from all the drinking, smoking, etc. you've done if you quit. True?

At 40, it's 80 percent. At 50, it's 70 percent. And so on.

BTW, I heard from science. True story.

Yeah, I've been doing yoga pretty much every day now after I pulled a tendon in my knee (or something, I was too lazy to actually go through the NHS system ) a few months ago. Definitely improved my workout game, as well as my general sense of well-being since then.

I know yoga is good for you but I still think it's gay and will try to put off doing it as long as I can. Besides a niggah limp is cool.

as a male, stretching, yoga and pilates is nearly never talked about. The only information written are by the most flamiest gay dudes who are toothpicks and also have how to apply cosmetics videos on youtube. info is hard to find unless you are willing to listen to a girl. Which makes it even harder for us to pay attention too.

That being said if more men could overcome their fear of looking like a royal fag, there would be a lot more people playing sports into their 40s

Well yeah that goes without saying. I probably could have been a yoga master if it was for the women and the gays cornering the yoga market.

Agreed. It really is all about the core and gluts. You have to have a stable base to operate from.

I hate doing core work though (and so I don't).

yoga aint gonna stop you doing an ACL.

Posted by Vivid Boy on Mar-02-2015 21:49:

already did an ACL, also did my PCL, MCL and both meniscus in my left knee. they cut out pieces of my hamstring to replace those 3 ligaments and had to shave off 50% of my meniscus.

Yoga helps now after recovery since my whole leg tightens up after any type of athletic movement. The bursa below my left knee would swell and be in agonizing pain because of the tightness from my IT hamstrings and thighs (bursa is where all those muscles would meet and would get super inflammed). trust me dude Yoga is very helpful.
Eventhough I work out my legs weekly and pretty hard. My left leg has never gotten back to the same strength and size of my right leg. This imbalance causes a lot of other issues. Yoga definitely helps to relieve the pain from those issues and gives way more range of motion.

It did help Ryan Giggs play on at the highest level until he was 40 though, which is some achievement.

lol jesus.

Posted by Vivid Boy on Mar-02-2015 23:17:

Ya I didn't add in the fact when those ligaments tore they shot into my knee cap giving me a locked knee. I had to do an emergency surgery first just to cut out all of those ligaments stuck in the knee cap. Then due to the trauma they had to do separate surgeries on each ligament. Took a year to do. Everytime I was able to walk again I had to do another surgery which put me back on to a couch and start learning how to bend my knee again. It was an intense year. I basically sat on a couch high on perc's for a full year, spending every day in physio and icing icing icing.

It took me a long time but I can now do anything I was able to do before the accident. The doctors surgeons and therapists were all top notch guys and were amazing. I created great relationships with them so now when I have minor injuries they treat me for free.

Posted by Big Worm on Mar-02-2015 23:26:

what was your injury?

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Mar-02-2015 23:36:

Fuck me. Eric, you just sound like a crock. Some people's bodies just can't handle it.

Posted by Vector A on Mar-02-2015 23:38:

Yeah, I actually have genetically weak ligaments / connective tissue and he is way worse off than I am...

Posted by Vivid Boy on Mar-02-2015 23:47:

It was because of the artificial turf I was playing on. I was playing indoor and we were playing at one of the worst arenas. The artificial turf was that cheap carpet style shit. My team was killing this other team. I saw it as an opportunity to up my points. I was going full blast on the last man back, and when I made my move my toe got stuck in the turf. My body was going full blast already so the momentum ended up pushing my body forward with my leg locked in the turf. It hyper extend pretty bad and I freaked out
Looking at my knee bent the opposite way. Stupidly I tried to twist out of the position and my knee dislocated everything popped and when I hit the ground my knee popped back into place but it ripped all of the ligaments and got them trapped into my knee. I thought I was fine because I didn't feel too much pain. My coach made me sit out anyways. At the end of the game when I went to stand I noticed I couldn't move my leg. Drove myself to the hospital and you know the rest now .

It was a shit injury. Totally bad luck. Knee injuries happen a lot in indoor soccer though

Posted by Lews on Mar-03-2015 00:10:

Fucking hell That's terrifying, man. I've always been afraid I'll fuck up one of my knees somehow. Most of my family has, mostly through skiing over the years, and mine sometimes make odd sounds when I'm doing squats at the gym, but to actually have your fucking knee bend the wrong way... Ugh.

I know artificial turf is better for the environment than regular grass, but fuck it sucks to play on. I remember playing on it (outside) in High School and trying to slide tackle somebody. Somehow my other leg got stuck (I think? Really not sure what happened, it was years ago and a bit of a blur in the moment) and somehow I ended up sliding with my shin down (no shin pads, this was gym class, not a real game) and needing to get medical attention due to non-stop bleeding and those fucking rubber beads stuck inside my wounds.

Real grass or a gym floor. Fuck artificial turf.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Mar-03-2015 00:15:

Yeah, makes me rethink my decision to join a soccer league at work. Ughhh.

Posted by Vivid Boy on Mar-03-2015 00:17:

Ya artificial turf is brutal to fall on never mind sliding. If you fall on that crap it rips you apart and next thing you know you're in the shower rolled up in a ball at the back of the stall like a rape victim because of the water hitting the wound.

The turf we were playing on didn't even have the rubber pellets it was
Basically like a carpet. Thank god they finally tore that place down

If you're playing coed I wouldn't worry too much. You see a lot of injuries in competitive because everyone is going pretty hard. In rec (which I play in now for fun with friends) I barely see people get injured unless they are just generally out of shape and trying something physical for the first time in years.

My mom got several ribs broken playing in an amateur soccer league with other thirty and forty somethings.

Apparently those ladies don't mess around.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Mar-03-2015 00:32:

Well I'm coordinated and athletic, I worry exactly about the people who aren't...like tripping me up or something, and then next thing you know I'M the one with an injury.

My bf's aunt rolled her ankle playing in a rec league.

Yeah fuck it, I'm totally not joining, lol.
