Drunk Addicted to Buying Vinyl

Have you ever felt your spending on vinyl getting out of control? The last couple of months have been that way for me. I'm sure many of you know what I'm talking about. You mark your calendar for the release date of that track you have been waiting for. Then you get it, spin it for a while, and then you hear another awesome track and the cycle repeats. Sometimes several times in one week for me lately. You have friends that spin too and you want to keep your edge over them with the latest tracks. I spin out maybe 1 to 2 times per month and its like I have this uncontrollable desire to bring the latest and the greatest tracks to the crowd, regardless of what it is doing to my wallet. I wonder sometimes how long this is going to go on. I've tried to just chill with the tunes I have and take a break but knowing certain new releases are just sitting there waiting to be picked up always has me going back for more. Anyone else know the feeling? How much do you spend on vinyl per month?

I know just what you mean, this last month has been the killer for
my planned budget. I was SO close on making a "small" order last night
but I had to keep myself from doing it.

And they are all so beautiful.. aaargh!

About a year ago i found myself buying between 30-70 vinyl a month....... I just went nuts. all the songs i like i had to have, no matter the price. How else could i get my hands on stuff like this:

Ayu - M EP
James Holden - Horizens (Way out West Remix)
Andain - Summer Calling
u2 - new years day (Ferry Corsten Remix)
DMB - the space between us (Tiesto Remx)

and how many hundreds of others.... So i was probably spending about a grand a month on new wax. Now i have totally cut back to about 10 per month max. I am so broke.......

I'm just wondering, how do guys support yourself financially if you have such a vinyl addiction?

Posted by Djeebie on Oct-22-2002 17:18:

They probably don't go out much, not spending money on clothing. Well just sitting at home spinning their newly bought vinyls...

I can understand people buying loads of vinyls and practicing at home and spinning at small parties and obviously having a dream of becoming a superstar DJ. But on the other hand, how big are your chances of becoming such a DJ? Only if you feel like you're doing the right thing you can continue buying loads of vinyls, not going out much. I think if you're not feeling like you're doing the right thing you should stop. It only brings you in a financially desperate situation. Just my opinion.

Posted by Stanza on Oct-22-2002 17:26:

Yeah I know. But I think they just buy it for the love of the music and the hobby of listening to nice crisp vinyl
Good but expensive hobby I reckon.

Posted by FuzzyGreen on Oct-22-2002 17:26:

I usually buy 5-8 new vinyls a month. I try to limit my buying, but I always feel like if I don't get it now, I probably wont ever be able to get it again. This isn't because I think I will be the next superstar DJ, but rather the fact that I have so much fun spining records for myself and friends (making mix cds).

I figure I will just get a Pioneer CD player soon, that way I can save money on vinyl, I can play rare stuff, and also mix my own tracks too.

Posted by trancearmada on Oct-22-2002 17:41:

well I have not purchased anything in 22 days now and counting! I have set a goal for my self that I need to save money and not spend it on vinyl I have got so much vinyl and I won't be spining most of it ever to the live crowd because the stuff will grow old, as you become a more popular DJ that you can afford to bring in the newest stuff. But try to keep your orders to a minimum of what you know you will be spining for sure and pic one particular style for yourself that helps you limit your self a lot, yeah that and will power. And try to stay away from the "EVIL" vinyl shops.

A couple of weeks ago, I bought about 200 Euro of vinyl in about a month. That's pretty much in my opinion, but I got a lot of good ones. There were also times that I didn't buy any in about 6 months or so, so that compensates it. Sometimes I regret it though, because it's so fucking expensive. I don't spin at parties, I just like to spin at home. Some people say I'm good though, maybe if my study will fail, I'm gonna try to play at parties, but for now I just don't have the time. Anyways, it's an addiction indeed, I'm a vinyladdict!

Posted by capricorn15 on Oct-22-2002 19:54:

i was addicted to buying vinyls, i used to take probably 75% of every paycheck last year and buy new vinyls, i was getting 3 and 4 packages of vinyls each week. But it turned into an expensive habit which i am glad i stopped doing it, now i go at most vinyl shopping once a month. The onyl way i was able to stop was when i ran out of money and stopped working and had to pay rent, argh, haha

Posted by Greedy on Oct-22-2002 20:58:

Records here cost about $10, so i live my life $10 at a time.
ie:
movies = 1 record,
movies with girl = 2 records,
movies with girl and snacks = 3 records

Once you start, you can't stop!

I had to cut myself off recently cause I realized there was very little in my account left!
I used to atleast a hundred a month!

i was the same way when i first started to spin but it soon caught up with me.I play at lots of local clubs and stuff so i just use the money i get from that to get more records, i dont run out and spend my entire paycheck anymore on records. Its nice to have all especially if u are a collector like me but u have to be smart and manage your money

Posted by eris on Oct-22-2002 21:57:

haha tell me about it.
i think im close to $1000 in debt now...

Posted by DJ Chrono on Oct-22-2002 22:44:

at times i think buying a final scratch would save alot of money.. but its just not the same

yeah i cut back my vinyl buying alot. just cant afford it, especially when i dont have a job

Posted by basd on Oct-22-2002 22:51:

I've just started spinning, but already I sometimes feel the need to buy records, even when I could spend my money in a more sensible way..

But on the other hand, I have two part-time jobs next to my study, so that generates the extra cash needed pretty good..

That's a great way of putting things in perspective (and you can always rely on vinyls to be there for you ) I just spent $70.00 today... There needs to be a rehab clinic for this, it's a true addiction (a fun one at that).

Posted by DJDigDug on Oct-23-2002 03:39:

Haha I just began buying and i hope to start spining for my bedroom soon heh i already am spending a lot already heh.

Posted by Psygnosis on Oct-23-2002 04:52:

Records in Australia are frikkin 20 dollars each...sheez

When i go to the record shop i try to limit my purchase...i try to get only 2 a week or 2 a fortnight cause right now i'm not made out of money and haven't got a job..

Until i get a job in a club, then things will pick..but right now, i pick slow...and i pick the best of the best.

For example..There is 5 vinyls i want...i listen to the one with the best build up and imaging how good it will sound in a club..

Last purchase i was gonna do i picked Solid Sessions - Janerio (AVB remix) and Dj kim - Get reasdy to explode (Original and Alphazone remix) from a list of Signum - Comin on strong (shokk remix) and Project 101 - Drifting (darren styles remix)..

just do what i do.:P

I am glad that i am not the only one. A tip. As Dj Psygnosis said you have to choose the best of the best. In the beginning i just bought before thinking if it was any good or not. You can say it's like buy them without hearing them. Choose with care and think long about it before you buy .

haha my dad told me the same thing, he knew i was addicted to buying vinyls, and he also knew i smoked
so he was like

3 packs of cigs = 1 vinyl

haha probably shouldve taken his offer, that would at least be 1 or 2 vinyls a week

Posted by SlinkySkev on Oct-23-2002 18:48:

I am addicted. I spend usually all my wages on vinyl (after rent and food etc) About 10 records a week. (At about 8 each its a bit expensive )

I usually write a list of the tunes I want to get. The problem is, when I can't get them i will buy more and more to cheer myself up

Also, i do mix CD's for people at work and friends so I suppose I have a reason for buying so many.

Buying vinyl is addictive, I know a lot of people here spin at parties and such like and when they hear a tune in a live set then must have it cos they think it will go down well. Problem is, there is a lot of music being made at the moment. Almost every week you can be sure that something has been released (be it on promo, white label, or officially) that you will like. And when you suddenly find a classic in your record store you have been after for months...it all adds up.

My advice ? Lock yourself in your room. Cut up any credit cards you may have (NO ONLINE SHOPPING FOR YOU!!!:"@!~) and burn any stereos etc that may be able to play music. Its the only way.
