Amazon FireTV vs Roku vs Apple TV
I'm sick of my 2 x apple TV3's not doing anything other than mp4's.
Roku sounds good but a lot of people say the interface is fugly combersome, and I know fuck all about fireTV but the specs lok fucking great.
Bring it.
I pay 50 dollars a year for Chinkbox. I get everything, even cholera.
Don't exist in freedomland unfortunately.
wankers even figured out how to kill free to air satellite, er, I mean "satellite testing".
I can watch movies before they are released in the cinema.,,at home, without downloading anything. The only thing that sucks, is that the ping pong subtitles are not optional.
Roku is good. The interface for HBO Go on it is pretty stupid, but it is not any worse than the one you have to use if you watch it through a normal web browser.
As long at it isn't Apple.
I recently bought a Roku and I liked it a lot better than my older generation Apple TV. It has a really nice interface and it is very responsive.
I'd go for firestick because you can sideload android apps. I dont think roku can do xbmc?
laptop and xbmc / kodi
thats all you really need. find a way to make your phone a remote, or get a small wireless keyboard and mouse.
link in your netflix etc
i dont think roku works with xmbc
thanks brosephs.
Laptop and XMBC aint an option; most laptop's video outs are too shit and get all choppy with any serious motion shots. It also sucks having a laptop on your mantelpiece just to watch TV.
Also, whatever I get has to be girlfriend proof and seeing as she can make any electronic device crash the moment she uses it, it can't be anything too complex.
How clunky is roku? The main thing I hear about it that there are too many channels/feeds so it basically becomes a pain to navigate.
Sideloading apps on the firestick might be a nice feature but I can't think of what I'd use it for in terms of TV?

Roku is generally good. Though the interface could be improved in some ways, it is superior to what you will find built into many TVs or Bluray players. Also more reliable. It crashes once in a while, but just restart it and you are ready to go again in a minute.
You dont need a laptop for xbmc, its over wifi to your modem to the servers that host the content. Its new age piracy bruv, torrents can get flagged but dont think xbmc servers can :} I'd always take the open ecosystem over the proprietary in terms of media :}
apple tv 2nd gen jailbroken with xbmc on there...
firestick w/kodi
Thanks again Guys.
I had totally forgotten about the AT2 jailbreak, because at one point the boxes were going for silly money ($400+) but a quick check on ebay shows tons are now being sold for under $200. I may go that route. They're solid as fuck apparently.
I have it on good authority that Apple have paid not to have the ATV3 jailbroken. They basically made a more lucrative offer to the guys than they'd ever get from people paying for the hack.
Otherwise, I'm leaning towards the roku.....
@msz - I'd still need a host for XMBC/Kodi. Firestick would do it though as EYK said....
Edit: Fuck. Forgot ATV2 is only 720p, That will look shit on my 50". Looks like it's a Roku or firestick then.
Anyone got the firestick?
Hmm, so guys are selling fully loaded firesticks and Fire's on ebay for $20 more than the price of the unit by itself.
Seems like it might be a plan....

I've been considering it but honestly, I need something that is really easy to use and has little to zero possibility of crashing. There's times when my missus just wants to switch on the TV and see something, not fuck about with software updates and locating EPG's. Sadly all of the HTPC interfaces are fucking horrible. One thing the apple TV does really well is just provide a simple interface, the thing never crashes (well maybe twice in 3 years) and the video quality is great. She fucking hates all things apple (and I hate ATV for only allowing mp4's) so I'm thinking a firestick will do it.... |
Thanks for the info.
I'm thinking of going for a full Fire just because one of the TV's I want to use in in my guest house and it's a good 90 ft from the wifi extender. I generally find those smaller stick type things don't do well on the wifi front, so i may need to hard wire/ethernet it.
Could do the stick for the living room though....

thanks again. I ended up getting a fully loaded Kodi FireTV off ebay and....
.....FUCK, this thing is incredible. I mean every single thing I could ever want. It's crazy. I was looking up obscure shows that never made it to DVD due to licensing wars and they;re all on there. There's thing that aren't even out in the cinema yet in full HD. It's bonkers. I can;t believe I've been struggling with my shitty Apple TV's for so long.
Thanks for the tip about sick beard Moral Hazard. I'll check it out. I heard there's issues with streaming from a NAS and you have to mess about with scripts to see which config works best.
May give it a try but I'm thinking just to install plex to stream the content from my Imac on the wifi network.
If you have any advice on how to do this easily via Kodi then I'd be mighty apprecaitive....
Ok, so I'm loving this amazon fire TV with Kodi but I'm having problems with reliable HD feeds.
Channel1 seems to have a selection but nearly all the TV show feeds are SD or worse.
I've only done a slight exploration on the others so far but similar story.
Are there any addons that really offer HD content for current shows?
Good IPTV Kodi plugin.
The stalker plugin has over 500 free live channels(hbo\showtime\cinemax\movie channels\cable channels)
Download Stalker plugin
http://kodi.wiki/view/Add-on:Stalker_Client
go to settings -> addon -> install from zip
In setttings -> enable PVR -> Enable stalker plugin and config with http://1.iptvprivateserver.tv/ and change the last 2 numbers of the mac address in stalker config.
A live tv section should appear as part of the menu.
