July - New Gear Thread

Just ordered a Korg Radias which was interestingly my very first synth to ever own about five years ago. Of course, I had no clue what knob did what and what exactly I had on my hands. Only had it a few months before I gave up and sold it. Interesting how things come full circle. Very excited to get my hands on it now that I'll be able to exploit it to it's fullest.

Also wanting to grab a Nord Lead 1 with expansion card and a TR-8. Selling my Korg Emx-1, BS2, and still have the Sledge and D50 up for sale.

Ultimately, I'll be rockin a TI2, Radias, and NL1 which is a perfect (and classic) set up. Then of course the TR-8 for drums. Along with Diva, Sylenth1, and V-station I'll have way more synths than I truly need. They'll each offer their own little flavor though and I'll never have to worry about running out of processing power.

yeah it can really nasty and brutal, mix knob tho for getting the right amount is really handy

Demo'd the VSM-3, nice - might pick it up in next sale - i only buy plugins now when heavily discounted and when i have coupons!

Just crossgraded to the Perfect Storm 2.5 from 2cAudio... I now have Aether, B2, and Breeze...

I think that puts me at around 7 dedicated algorithmic reverbs:

Got my expanded Nord Lead 1 today and man oh man....why have I waited so long to buy a Nord Lead? It's nearly impossible to make it sound bad. It's limited in what it can do, but what it does, it's very F'ing good at it. I don't want to hype it up too much since I just got it today, but I don't foresee ever getting rid of this thing unless I'm upgrading to an NL4 or something

Nords are class synths

Just got the Roland JD-Xi, but not sure I want to keep it. Only messed around with it for about an hour or so, will have to give it more time and patience to decide.

New apartment and new laptop. I'm going to be holed up here all summer.

Looking at grabbing a pair of Focal Alpha 80's and some treatment when I move into a new house.

Anyone used Focal monitors before? Good value for the money? I just want decently flat frequency response and hearable sub bass.

Ive had 2 sets of Focals, Twins and currently SM9

honestly, your room plays a more important factor, if you can get some treatment in there it will improve your monitors no end.

Spend a decent amount on monitors if you know you are going to be making music for a while as you will only want to upgrade in a year or 2 if you dont

I don't have any monitors currently and yeah, when I move into my new house I plan on using the least square space possible and setting up damping on the walls among other things. But I currently have *no* monitors, just headphones and want to get a decent pair.

Think I am in this hobby for the long haul as well.

Ended up ordering a pair of Focal Alpha 50's and a Steinberg UR28M. The eventual plan is to get a 5.1 monitoring setup but its pointless doing that with 8" monitors.

Yep, that was my reasoning on the matter as well.

Now I just need to re arrange my room and start working on optimal placement and some treatment. Thing is I am moving in a few months though so I can't go overboard on it...

Did you get their strange fabric keyboard too? I love that you can use a wii remote with it.

Only thing that seems strange is that it's only T100 ethernet and FW800. Seems bizarre that they're using such outdated/soon to be obsolete technology on a "super computer". Then again, I suppose it's only connectivity and the magic is under the hood.

It's also weird that they are notoriously secretive about the actual goods. No mention of any of the hardware inside or what platform the software is hosted.

My GAS is rubbish at the moment.

All I bagged recently is a CME X-Key 25 for the Macbook/iPad

Grabbed one recently as well, the fact that they managed to work in polyphonic aftertouch is awesome.

The keys have a decent feel considering the form factor too.

Yeah i've heard good things.

It's surprising how many good quality small form factor keyboards simply don't exist. I bought this to replace an Arturia keylab and Akai MPK mini, both of which were a little but shit.

Aftertouch is a bonus when designing synth patches.

I think it is a UAD sort of situation. NEcessary when it was being used in film but a giant dongle now. If anyone wants a guaranteed job in nedia, learn kyma , some object oriented language like C or java and you will have a job if you like that stuff.

Unless they are using quantum bits, then its pretty much a computer like every other computer. They won't release the details because the flops is probably like UAD and as powerful as an ipod

Hmmm, I have the akai MPK mini and it is a bit pony, although it serves my rubbish playing needs.

That X-Key though looks fucking perfect, and has poly aftertouch? How is the velocity sensitivity on it?

You're right, although it's a little bit of a dying breed to just program Kyma. Having said that you'd be amazed (well not you actually, but others) in how much outdated tech gets used by composers and sound designers.

Right up until about a year ago, one famous, mainly comedy composer who happens to have a more famous composer brother, both of which have double barreled last names, was using still a giga array for all his samples. The system was really limited, like straight out of 1995. but I suppose, when it works, it works.

It's not brilliant tbh

The keys on the X-key are a bit like long Macbook keys so low velocity is hindered by a definite click with note on. Velocity sensitivity is 'ok', but not as modulatable as a normal keyboard. It's a bit low or high and maybe something in between, but better than nothing. Aftertouch is just on or off, simple as that!

It's the same with the pressure sensitive pitch and mod buttons. I find it difficult to instinctively feel much difference between low and high pressure. I would have preferred a much harder prod to achieve full pitch/mod values.

It's also bloody noisy to play, like you'd imagine a full size qwerty would be

Still, I need aftertouch for some banks I'm doing so I'd rather this than having to go find a full size replacement for my midi controller.

Rearranged my room and added the Focal Alpha 50's. I doubt placement is optimal and havn't done any treatment yet but I am moving in a few months so there isn't much of a point stressing over it.

Also got the Steinberg UR28M on my desk but I am not too happy with it, the DAC has a high noise floor which results is constant white noise on the monitors. Maybe going to return it for something else.
