Just put a turbo on my BRZ

This is the way the car should've came from the factory, it doesn't ruin any of the great aspects of it. It's still a wonderful driver's car on a great chassis but now it has the power it always needed.

Just got it back 2 days ago, it dyno'ed at 275rwhp @ 10psi, so based on dyno's of factory BRZs that should be around roughly 342hp at the crank. It's a daily driver so this is more than plenty for the little 2700lb car, it's still tame enough for traffic if you're light on the throttle but get heavy on the throttle and things definitely get dramatic at full boost so it has plenty of fun factor too.

is that your actual motor? i agree, it should have a turbo on it as standard... 200hp is just cutting it too fine. that put me off, wonder if prodrive are doing a package over here.

here is mine, old girl's getting on

yeah that's the stock 2.0L boxer (Subaru's FA20D) except all the aluminum + blue pipes are part of the turbo kit.

nice pic! WRX STI's never get old, they only get more classic. great cars, what year is it and do you have any pics of the full car? i actually like the older bodystyles of the WRX STI's alot more than the new ones, same goes with Mitsubishi Evo's.

05 i think, JDM spec C.

i like the even older bug eyes too.

how much was the turbo kit? it could definitely be a future car for me. chris harris gave the GT86 model a very good review.

Gorgeous, I love your WRX STI.

It was $3000 USD, it's the SBD turbo kit. There are threads about it over at ft86club.com. I read through all the threads I could find before pulling the trigger on it. There are definitely alot of options out there for FI with the BRZ/GT86/FRS.

only thing putting me off a RWD is i live on a big fuck off hill. if it snows, it is very tricky to negotiate. other than that... drifting all the way to work sounds great

i definitely wouldn't go back to FWD... pathetic.

yeah that sounds tricky for RWD. it's definitely a great drift car. with traction control off, it's really easy to slide the rear end out and hold it out without the car swinging around or fishtailing (as long as you have experience with going sideways). it's such a well-balanced chassis. I used to have a saleen mustang with way too much $$$ in mods and that car was a beast, the brz/86 platform is a breeze to control while sideways in comparison. with traction control on, the brz reminds me alot of the RX-8 in terms of handling which is a good thing. I had to get rid of that car cuz maintenance + poor gas mileage + it being a new car payment (it was an '04 RX-8 in 2003) just made it too expensive to own long-term. I was bummed when I had to trade in the RX-8.

i've never had the pleasure of driving an AWD car unfortunately. i'm a big fan of WRX's, Evo's and those late 90's 3000GT VR-4's but haven't ever had a chance to drive any of them. i've had 2 FWD cars ('99 & '06 eclipses) which are fine as ordinary grocery getters but i agree, they have no fun factor IMO.

My last car was a Mitsi Evo, Evolution 4 with Evo 7 engine, gearbox, drivetrain and was running 400bhp

that sounds like a nice conversion! i can't believe Mitsubishi said they were calling it quits on the Evo, it's their flagship car. early rumors are saying that apparently it's supposed to be replaced by something similar except it's hybrid and no turbo. i guess we'll have to wait and see how that pans out. i'm all for hybrids and even electric cars like Tesla but i'm definitely sad to see the Evo go. they're definitely playing a risky game of alienating their die-hard Evo fanbase. hopefully it's successor is something impressive. McLaren's P1 did amazing things with hybrid technology by allowing it to run in a fuel economic way or by allowing the batteries drive the car harder, which makes me think of something like electric boost. at least that's what my impression is after hearing Jay Leno, Top Gear and other misc people talk about it. so what Mitsubishi is doing is definitely do-able but if they take that approach then i doubt the Evo's successor will be affordable to much of its usual fanbase.

the factory header was replaced with a manifold for the turbo. it runs great, turbo lag is only noticeable when i go from a dead-stop other than that it spools up really fast. the car is definitely much quieter now with the turbo.

i have an aftermarket catback that gave the BRZ a really nice sound, that low boxer rumble. it wasn't too loud, i wanted something that was loud enough for me to hear it real well from inside the car but not loud enough to hear it from a mile away. so in that regard it was a relatively quiet catback compared to most of the other aftermarket catbacks. but now with the turbo, it's way quieter than before. the turbo muffled the sound quite a bit, so it's definitely a sleeper at this point. you can still hear the exhaust note but it's just a little bit louder than stock. the main difference is the tonality of the exhaust which sounds quite a bit different from stock, it retained alot more of that rumble. i can only just barely hear the exhaust from inside the car, the turbo is much louder. but i'm told that the car sounds nice from behind.

I'm getting so fucked off with the turbo lag on my Merc C Amg that I'm thinking of getting rid of the car. Also hate the fact that it's defaulted to Economy mode, not sport, just to comply with US EPA regs. Really thinking about trading it.

Only problem is, I said my next car would be a Tesla

Am I just baked, or is this an actual car question or (what I'm reading as) a gender reassignment joke? Cause lol. Lolol.

If that no gender joke I buy Jay turbo for rickshaw. And when I say turbo I mean cocaine for rickshaw jockey.

damn that sucks about the turbo lag being so bad. is it an aftermarket turbo you put in or is it OEM by AMG? if it's by AMG then i'm surprised they didn't do sequential twin turbos so you have a smaller turbo that spools up real quick until you're going fast enough or RPM's high enough to spool up the bigger turbo.

i'm guessing your Merc is an automatic transmission, does the Economy Mode always keep it a gear higher than it normally should be in so your RPM's are always really low? a lot of cars seem to be doing that now, great for gas mileage but you don't have any power with the RPM's being low all the time. i'm guessing the Sport Mode lets you run the RPM's higher for more power before the automatic shifts?

i hear you on the Tesla! before i got the BRZ, i swore the next car i got would be electric cuz i'm so sick of dealing with gas prices. i live in the city and have to commute a lot of miles to my job outside the city, it's the opposite of what most people do but long story short, i go through a lot of gas. problem is, all the electric cars are ugly as hell IMO and don't get good range. Tesla's get great range and look amazing, so Tesla is the answer but they're wayyyy outside my price range.

Posted by rubez on Aug-06-2015 11:11:

turbo lag isn't a real thing. it just means you need to manage your gears better

my engine redlines at 8000rpm. you need to use that shit.

don't autos have a kickdown thing? hit that twice and off you go.

No, it's the factory AMG, not OEM. I'e got the C250 Sport AMG - a 2L 4 cylinder which has a single turbo. Don't get me wrong, when the turbo fully boosts, it's s thing of joy and the acceleration is really linear. It's also a light car (hence why I went for it over the 300 which has a larger engine) so it feels very snappy in terms of agility, but it's getting the turbo up to speed that kills me.

And yeah, it's an auto - there's no point in LA owning anything else. You'll be riding clutch for 90% of your day without it and the rest of the time you're doing 70 on the motorway so there's really no point.

The problem is for Merc to have qualified with California's and the US's EPA rating and MPG claims, they had to force most their models in to Economy and it basically always skips 1st gear - you pull off in second - and then the rev points are low for gear changes.

In Sport mode, it's fine as the rev point maps are much better but there's still turbo lag until it spins up.

The C63 AMG is a whole different beast and has a 4L twin turbo that puts out over 470bhp but I've never really understood the point of that Merc - it's like going for the most budget line, then buying the highest spec model from it. If I was going to spend $75k+ on a car, there would be 5 other cars I'd buy before even considering the C63.

It's really not the end of the world that the turbolag in there, just a bit annoying. One thing I love about the car is how solid it is - there's no flex, it goes where you exactly point it and I'll give Merc that they know how to think about what someone wants in a car and how to deliver it. It both looks and feels like good engineering.

You're talking bollocks.

Ferrari don't even use turbos because they hate lag and obviously have access to every single engine technology they could ever want. It's not a question of managing gears either - turbos work in relation to RPM, so gears only get you so far and again, it's still not going to help the delay between the initial spin and them getting up to pressure - it's the physics of how they work. Twins go a long way to solving it but it's still there, and in no small part because the difference between with and without them is so dramatic.

Yes, autos have kickdowns but again, please explain how that makes the turbo get up to pressure fast enough?

I can redline my merc by auto gear selection but again, that doesn't do shit for the initial turbo lag.

My next car will be a Tasla. I just wish they could 300 miles. That would seal the deal for me.

if you drop a gear or two, your RPM shoots up instantly.

there is also a cut off point on the accelerator pedal, where if it isn't depressed enough, the boost wont engage no matter what RPM you are at. using a combination of this and managing your gears, you can have instant boost whenever you want... wide open throttle and your flying.

you can have boost from a standing start if you so desire - i've done it.

also... ferrari F40 - the greatest ferrari of all time for many professional car critics... turbocharged.

LOL damn! imagine pulling up next to a Camry that has quiet exhaust and looks stock, a black intercooler so it doesn't stick out. then the stock-looking Camry just pulls away from you as if you were standing still. i bet that Camry leaves people in a state of total confusion - "did i just get destroyed by a Camry?!?!" hahaha nice

i relate entirely to what you're saying about getting an automatic. i've always had manuals up until the BRZ which i bought as an automatic. i used to have a Saleen Mustang with a very heavy clutch and used to get stuck in downtown traffic with it sometimes, my left leg would feel like i was pushing weights with it by the time i finally got home.

so this time around, i bought the BRZ with an automatic. i live 3 miles from downtown Atlanta and sit in an insane amount of stopped traffic every single day which is miserable to do with a clutch. a lot of people think that buying a BRZ in an automatic is a complete waste and tend to talk alot of shit to people who own an automatic, i would agree with them b/c of the fun factor associated in a manual. but if your car's a daily driver and you live in major city, dealing with that congestion for hours everyday then buying an automatic seems like a no-brainer to save yourself the grief of dealing with a clutch in a situation like that. there are some atlanta-area FRS/BRZ owners who get together for events, so i catch shit from them sometimes until i tell them why b/c the people who talk shit about automatics are people who don't have to deal with extreme traffic. Atlanta's traffic is a nightmare, i can only imagine how L.A. is. if i lived close to my job or outside the city then i would've gotten a manual. the automatic BRZ has tiptronic and paddle shifters, so i drive it manual on weekends and i slap it into automatic for the bumper-to-bumper weekday traffic. it's not a double-clutch transmission but it's actually fairly impressive for what it is. its shifting is pretty responsive considering it's not a double-clutch automatic.

true, you can spool a turbo up very quickly by downshifting and going WOT which will generate enough exhaust to spool the turbo up very very quickly. last week i walked an Evo IX from a rolling start @ 40mph. i downshifted to 2nd (which put me somewhere around 5500rpm IIRC) and hit WOT, the turbo spooled instantaneously to full boost. when you're already rolling enough to where you can be at high rpm's in whatever gear then hit the throttle hard - it feels instantaneous like a supercharger. of course it still has to spool up but in that scenario it does it so quickly that the time to spool is so quick that it comes off seeming instant, it's an insignificant/unnoticeable amount of delay.

however if i'm starting off from a dead-stop then the turbo lag is bad. it starts off from idle which is around 700rpm, i go heavy on the throttle and i'm waiting for the RPM's to climb until my engine is finally pushing enough exhaust to spool up the turbo. it's lag, lag, lag, then boom - you start getting full boost and are pulling hard.

if it were a manual, then you could launch it from higher RPM's by dumping the clutch which would spool it up very quickly.... or these days you could enable launch control and achieve the same thing basically. but me and RANN have automatics which don't have launch control and don't have a clutch so we can't launch it at a desired RPM, we basically just have to go WOT from a complete idle which makes for a painful launch with bad turbo lag. i'm not sure if there are any tiptronic automatics that do have launch control but if so, then that'd defintely help combat turbo lag from a dead-stop. based on what i've read online, the BRZ automatics don't have launch control available like the manual transmission BRZ/FRS/GT86 can do (i think with the BRZ/FRS/GT86 you need a tune to get the launch control though)

once i'm already rolling though then it's a different story and you're right rubez. it's just a matter of downshifting + getting heavy on the throttle so you're engine begins immediately pushing out plenty of exhaust to where there really isn't any noticeable turbo lag... unless it's a strange situation where you have a giant turbo on a tiny engine of course but that's getting off-topic because that'd be chalked up to a bad setup. they'd need just a small shot of n2o which would force your RPM's to jump very quickly as well as pushing that little engine to produce a lot more exhaust at a much faster rate which would in turn, spool the turbo faster. or do sequential turbos like i mentioned earlier, using a small turbo that is easy for your engine to spool up immediately until your engine is pushing out enough exhaust to spool up the bigger turbo.

Really? I also heard there's this circular thing that if you turn it, it makes the car go in a different direction

No shit that RPM is higher in lower gears and analogous speeds

But good luck doing any of this in an auto.

Are you fucking kidding me? I've driven an F40 and while it was a great car, it was made in 1987 and there's been a couple of technological advancements since then in engine technology. Ferrari hate turbos and admit they're being forced int o using them again due to ever harsher emissions standards - there's no way to get the same BHP boost with as low emissions. They said if they didn't have to, they'd never use a turbo again because of the lag it introduces in performance.

@dizzy - you're right, from a dead stop, the turbo an auto is laggy as fuck. When I'm already in 2nd or 3rd and doing anything more than 15mph, then it's fine but to pull away you're just waiting for that fucking spooling to hit. Again, my merc is sporty enough it's just that there's such a disparity to when the turbo is fully pressurized and not, that kills me. I don't even have to force downshift if I'm already rolling, just thumping on the accellerator is enough to make the revs jump and the turbo kicks in quite early, it's only really just when you're rolling slow and need it to power out that the lag kills you.
