How much do top DJs like Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk make

Hi, I'v always wondered this. How much do you think Tiesto and Paul Van Dyk will make, when there at Roxy. I'v heard between 20,000 and 60,000 dollars. I'v even heard, Paul Van Dyk can make up to 80,000. Is this really true. How much do they make the night they DJ. Also, what do DJs not as popular as Tiesto and PVD make. Take like Scott Bond, Judge Jules or Cosmic Gate.

Posted by tiesto14 on Oct-26-2002 04:55:

i "HEARD" from some girl i know, who knows people at Roxy, that Tiesto got around $45,000 when he played last Friday....give or take.

not sure if thats true...but thats what i heard.

i think that Oakenfold makes the most though....but not sure how much.

and i have also heard that a club will sometimes pay for the DJ's hotel and maybe airfare....but again not positive.

Posted by jdat on Oct-26-2002 05:27:

now don't forget it depends on the event ( that's easy to figure )

apart from that yes all expenses are covered most of the time

carl cox can take up to 200 000 a night
oakey in the same range

and the others is like 15 to 80 000 depending on who when where

now don't forget one detail, that money goes to vaster number of people, promo people, label , the bills etc .....

but well the djs still make their living good

Posted by Twilo99 on Oct-26-2002 06:08:

jdat, there is no way in history Carl Cox can make up to 200,000 dollars. Unless Cox is gonna fill up some stadium. The most I'v heard anyone make, was 60,000 to 80,000. I heard Exit paid PVD that much, when he was there.

Posted by tiesto14 on Oct-26-2002 17:06:

ya i think i have to agree with Twilo on that one....200,000 is a little far fetched...thats what like people N*SYNC pull in...well around tht figure...noway Carl Cox could.

Posted by Redeye on Oct-26-2002 17:30:

ok, here is the deal with Carl Cox.

Carl Cox gets between 10-20 thousand. the only time he receieved any more was when he played the millenium party in both Australia and Hawaii. He recieved about $500,000 for that because he technically played 2 NYE parties in 1 day. Oakenfold gets between 15-35 thousand for a usual 2-3 hour set. He also has other stipulations built in that force that # up but that other money isnt going to him. Tiesto is around 20g's, there is no way in hell he got 45gs to play roxy, Mike Bindra would never go for it. PVD maybe gets 25-35 from Bindra if not less because they are friends. The most I have ever offered to book anyone was 50g to Oaky for a 6 hour set which he turned down and Boy George turned down 55gs to due a set/concert at Hammerstein. It wasnt the money for him though, he just didnt want to fly, what a bitch ;-) Some of the best known djs also come the cheapest as well so dont ever think you need to pay a lot to get a lot. Dave Seaman you can get for $1,500 as well as Dave Ralph. Both bring an excellent promotional team that will brting in the people for you by supplying posters, ads, etc... So when you ask how much, just think in the back of your mind how much profit.

When you book guys like Oaky, PVD, and Tiesto, you ALWAYS lose money, no matter how many tickets you sell or how much they go for, you ALWAYS lose money. If they made money they would bring these guys every week and pack the place, but because they lose money every time they have to take a few weeks off to make that money back on other nights. Yes, thats right, Roxy turns a profit on other nights as hard as it is to believe, but the bar is $$$$$$$$ and they all know it. For Oaky and PVD since it is 18+ the bar makes jack shit other than water sales on other nights it can do anywhere from 10gs to 100gs depending on the crowd. I have seen a lounge that holds 150 people bring in 75-100g's a night no problem, thats where the money is made, not in the dj you bring.

U krazy, dude!!!
PVD made $60,000 for 6 hour set @ SF....
loosing money? u must be on the wrong planet..
Tiesto tix were $50 @ the door and so will be PVD..
Lemme see.. average $45 a ticket x10,000 people throughout the night = 450,000 just in tickets alone.. take away $10,000 TOPS to pay off $6/hour cashiers and $15/hour bouncers..
Add another $500,000 in profits on alcohol and $5 water bottles...
CLub makes 1,000,000 a night, PVD gets $60,000 club gets $900,000 (think 1-10 people, owners, etc..)..
-$100,000 a night rent (TOPS)...
Now u tell me again, club is loosing money those nights.. Tell me that again..
If tiny GLOW with like 200 people dance floor and $15 entrance fee makes money, which I tried to understand how, then NYC clubs r definifely EXTREMELY profitable..
BTW, Jonathan Peters of SF makes $15,000 on a regular Saturdays and
1/2 the NIGHTLY cash register + $5,00 bonus on theme nights (think $300,000 a night)...

Good DJs = more people in, more people in = more tix sales and higher ticket price and more sales of alcohol and H2O..

art, until you actually work at a club and have a clue about costs dont think that 10,000 people EVER pay to get into SF at $45 a piece. If you honestly think that 10,000 people went to see PVD @ SF then you must have done WAY too many drugs that night.

Lets use SF as an example, it holds maybe 3,500, for PVD it had about 2,700 because the top floor and the basement were empty. 2,700 X $40 = $108,000, thats ONLY if EVERYONE paid to get in. Now, lets be realistic here, maybe 50% paid if you eliminate sponsors, promoters, promoter's friends, and club employees. You are now down to $54,000. Now, lets add the costs of extra security and overtime since the club will be open for an extended period of time. Electricity for a club that size is about 250,000/month and its really only running fridays-sundays. So thats about $62,500/weekend or $20,833.33/night now that 54,000 is only $33,166.67, we STILL haven't paid PVD a dime yet. Now, lets pay our employees. Doormen, coatcheck, security, cleaning staff, lighting staff, electricians, soundmen, management, bar tenders, etc... Per night thats at least 20,000, now you are down to 13,166.67. Now lets buy our alcohol and cover costs for broken items, misc. items. That alone will be about 20,000 for all supplies plus breakables. You are now $-6833.33 and you STILL havent paid PVD. Now lets pay PVD $35,000 and advertising for PVD plus airfare for PVD,plus hotel suite for PVD, plus Limo for PVD, plus expenses PVD incurred, you are now at $50,000 for PVD. Your total profit for the night now is $-56,833.67. Now lets pay Luis Diaz and Edgar V for playing and their airfares and expenses as well, thats about $10,000 so you now sit at a grand total of $-66,833.67. Now, the only way SF makes that money up is at the bar. Water there costs $4 or $5 a bottle and everyone buys 1 and refills it. If that is the case then in order to break even SF must sell 16708.4175 bottles of water @ $4 or 13366.734 @ $5. You honestly think they sell 16,708 bottles of water in 1 night???? When you have spent 4 years working for the largest club in the US you know what things cost. I hope this helps explain what I'm talking about since you seem to be slightly jaded by assuming that the only thing the club is paying is the DJ.

I know Boy George got 25k for spinning Philly a few years ago. Was pretty funny to. It was during a horrable snow storm. 8 people showed up all night.

Actually it doesnt matter how many people the club holds; what matters is the number of people WHO GO THRU THE DOOR. Twilo used to hold 3000 people but on a few of the PvD nights about 8000 people went thru the door according to the owner. He spun from 2-9 or so but people came in at around 11pm but there is a constant flux of people going in and out on these huge nights; some people are coming at 1; others at 3 or at 6 in the am, while people are leaving as well so YES u can have many more people coming thru the door than the capacity of the venue.

Posted by amdmaxx on Oct-27-2002 05:25:

U hear that, RedEye?
I am tellin ya. SF and Roxy can get 10,000+ people a nite.. (for Theme nites @ sf and PVD @ roxy..

8,000 according to the owner. hmm, if there is one person I trust less than the promoters its the numbers the owner tells you. In my 5 years at Avalon, we did over 100 theme nights and had over 75 guest djs, the only time they ever made oney on the guest dj night was if the guy came for less than 20G's. Then the profit was around $1,000. They made about $5,000 for Nick Warren, about $7,500 for Dave Seaman, and lost about $15,000 when Sasha and Oaky came. The next time Oaky came they lost $30,000 because it was raining and no onme came. The profit margin for big name djs, if there is a profit, is very small. You dont bring in guest djs to make the profit usually anyways, you do it when your other nights are struggling and you are trying to make a name for yourself.

Now, I assume that you all wonder how Glow does it, well its actually very easy. A) Glow only brings djs that are playing somewhere else in the US that weekend, so that they dont pay airfare costs from Europe. That saves tons of money. B) they get sponsors such as beer companies and Red Bull to pay for the djs so that Glow doesnt have to fork over a dime. C) Their expenses are extremely low since the whole sound system is run by 1 amp in the back room. D) The club doesnt own the soundsystem so they dont have to pay anyone to run it or tweak it, the DJ owns the system and the booth so whatever costs there are to fix it the dj, not the club, incur them. Glow is a great product for showing how you can make something out of nothing. They have great marketing and great word of mouth. Plus, for those that dont know, Glow has 3 floors and holds about 3,500 people. So, its not like they only have the 350 people on the 1st floor for the DJ, they also have the latin lounge and the hip hop lounges that both get PACKED. That place is doing it right, they bring who they want to bring, and they listen when people tell them to bring certain djs. Who else would bring Marco V???? (Dont mention ARC because Bindra wasnt the one who got him)

Posted by amdmaxx on Oct-28-2002 00:09:

LOL... that is what they were telling u!!!
Why in the world would u bring someone and loose $30,000? answer that to me.... and ON REGULAR BASIS!!!!!
And about red bull and glow.... Roxy can get red bull sponsor the DJ as well, cant they?
Ian, give it up... Owners of Roxy, SF, Exit and Arc are swimming in money and not loosing $30,00 a night on regular basis...
JP made around $200,000 - $300,000 just last nite on SF theme nite.. And he is just a DJ...

Art, its just not worth explaining it to you anymore, because you are choosing to only see it from the patrons point of view. You have never done the books for a club, nor done any sort of club promotion, dj booking, party management, etc... so basically you are just sputtering what you assume to be the norm. Yes, the club owners are swimming in money, but NOT because they bring big name djs in on a regular basis. Also, if you honestly think that JP brings $300,000 profit per night then you have to be the biggest smacked ass on earth. That means that just off jp saturdays Cracktory makes about 15 million in profit per year. Now, im not saying they dont make money with JP, but come on now Art, I know you are smarter than to listen to what they tell you and you are also smart enough to realize that if a club is pulling in 15 million in profit off 1 guy dont you think he would ask for more money?????

Correct. Twilo rarely shut their doors even when they were full beyond capacity. Why? Because they know if its get too packed and hot people will buy more water or leave.
The overhead for bringing a DJ (flight & hotel) is high but the door ($40-60) satisfies that expense. Comps are scarce for PVD. If the club lost money on bringing the superstars they wouldn't do it. It's not logical. The club owners main goal is to make money not make us happy. They are not bringing amazing talent knowing they are gonna lose money. It just doesn't make sense.
When Factory has a no name $750 DJ on Friday and only 200 people show up. Thats a LOSS.

"you do it when your other nights are struggling and you are trying to make a name for yourself" The people who are going to PVD aren't regulars at Roxy. Yes you establish recognition based on your lineup but that doesn't make people go on a weekly basis when you have no name DJ's playing. People went to Twilo every week because they had good lineup NOT because Carl Cox played the month before.

LOL.. i laughed at the comment that tiesto makes 35,000 a night and also at carl cox makeing 200,000 a night.. lol.. well, to answer some questions.... paul oakenfold is in the guiness book of world records for highest payed DJ @ 15,000 a night. ... it was from couple years ago so he probably makes a bit more then that now. but no way in hell does carl cox make 200 G's in one night.... im hopeing that i read that post wrong =)

FACT: PVD made $60,000 for a 6 hour set in SoundFactory this year...
Your guiness book of records dates back to 18xx and not 19xx..

Posted by Choobak on Oct-29-2002 09:04:

Ok.. hold on... I've been thinking about this for a bit.

Now if a club makes money on a regular night (which it should), would it be safe to assume that Roxy makes money on one of its regular Sexy Friday parties or whatever?

Because if this is the case, I think it follows that the club should make money on a guest DJ night too. Consider that the friday night Roxy party is an 18 and over event so bar profits for this party would be similar to the ones for a guest DJ party. Consider also that at a Sexy Friday party admission is cheaper, less people come, and less people pay due to Roxy cards and comps and what not. So door profits are significantly lower than what would be made during a guest DJ night.

Alright, now at a guest DJ night there's a need for more security/promoters and the extra expenses of the DJ and his salary. Now, since bar profits stay the same for these parties (hell, they might even be higher at the guest DJ party due to the extra people) the increased profit from the higher door prices of the party only need to cover the price of the guest DJ and his expenses and the cost of extra security/promoters. Now I've never run books for a club but I think this is completely possible...

I'm just gonna make up some numbers now so don't blow up on me... Let's say on a regular night the club has 2500 people over the course of the night... and let's say on average 1/4 is paying full price so that's 625 people paying $25 or $15625...

Now on a Guest night, let's say 5000 people come to the club of which half are paying the full price of $40. That's $100000 or $84375 more in door receipts than what the club would make on a regular night...

According to your earlier numbers that would be enough to cover PvD ($50000) and the extra employee money ($20000) and still leave $14375...

Alright.. hehe.. so I pulled those numbers out of my ass and i'm making assumptions but I think this holds some relevance...

I dunno if this has anything to do with anything, but I met an owner of Godskitchen UK very recently, and he was telling me that their club loses money, week after week. The only event that makes money is their summer festival, Global Gathering,. He said this is common among most promoters- their money maker is the summer festival.
Makes u wonder how they survive- it can't be on cd sales alone.
