The Ring...scariest movie ever?

I saw this tonight and it was so fuckin' brilliant!! You have to see this film it is truly freaky. Most movies don't scare me but this one had true originality and a complex plot that will play with your head.

It's a perfect 10 on my list. What did you think?

IMHO, the original japanese version might pretend to that title (atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere!!!)... Americanized ring is just too hollywoodish / useless special effects to be scary in any way... It is a nice movie, but lacks the suspence and thrill of the original..

I havent seen the hollywood remake version but i just saw the original version today and i must admit its one pretty damn good movie. There is a part 2 to The Ring. I havent seen it yet though? Anybody seen it yet?

Posted by Shudder on Oct-26-2002 05:46:

i heard from a friedn that there was 3 parts to the original version of 'the ring'. i have yet to see both and am kinda looking forward to it.

Posted by SynRG888 on Oct-26-2002 07:42:

I haven't seen the american version either, but i saw the original japanese version about 3 years ago w/ chinese subtitles and my friend translating as the movie went along, and i STILL thought it was the scariest movie i'd ever seen!!!!! Like seriously for I wasn't right for a few days.... the japanese know how to do scary movies.

Don't see the sequels tho, i heard they were all done by different directors 'n shit trying to cash in on the success of the original "ring" in japan.... all my friends say they suck.

Fucking scared the hell out of me at one point..i know you all know which scene that was I also had 1 guy and 2 girls with me when i watched it during night time... And they where literarily screaming lol. DO watch it with your girlfriends

Posted by Verona^My on Oct-27-2002 12:27:

pretty clever... 2 sequels, almost has me thinking you guys are talking about Lord of the Rings, but when you starting mentioning translation I knew you weren't

Ringu - the original japanese vesion, rapes american version any time of day... Sadoko owns you!!! Based on the novel "Ring" - 1997

Rasen - the sequel to Ringu, which was a total flop, and the producers pretend that it did not exist... Based on the same-titled novel.. I have not seen it, since it's so craooy, it's impossible to find/dl - 1997

Ringu 2 - the "official" sequel of Ringu... Ties in many plotholes left by The Ringu: develops the story of Sadoko and her Uncle, etc... Although this movie is good (as far as sequels go), it's still a "sequel". It's not directly based on a book.. - 1998

Ringu 0 'Rebirth' - the prequel of the ring series, it's the story of Sadoko's ill-fated love, and her death. It's more a suspence movie than horror film, and you already KNOW what will happend, granted you have seen the first two... It's interesting nevertheless - though some story choices made by directors are fucked up... Based on a short story Ringu - Rebirth.

The Ring - American version of The Ring: Dreamworks have bought the rights to the story from the nippon producers, and made their own movie.. The first half of the movie is really close to Ringu, the second part is completely invented by scriptwriters/producers of this version. Special effects really killed the mood of that movie, but it's still a nice watch.. Better than teen horror fliks..

Ringu Series - There are 2 or 3 miniseries out in japan which are the reproduction of the story on Ringu / Rasen / Loop books.. The main hero there is male (and not a female) reporter, and Sadoko is a hermaphrodite and not a "girl"... There is no appearance from reflective surface/screen/whatever involved - people die of a simple "Sadoko" virus... Haven't seen those myself, and not quite in mood to see them either...

Hope that clears up for you what versions there are... Happy watching..

I was disspointed in this film, I agree that the 'atmosphere' of a scary movie is what I really look for.. I found this movie dragged in too many parts, and some of the plot I didn't like..

It had the potential to be so much better, so that makes me ask where the hell can I see the Japanese version?? I would love to check that one out, I'm sure I'll enjoy it way more

<-- will have the japanese version in 3 hours 38 minutes

Hadn't heard about this movie yet, since I live in Europe and it take 6 or so months to reach cinemas here

What Lies Beneth is the scariest movie i've ever seen but I will blaze some and see this movie for sure though

Posted by k.k.d. on Oct-28-2002 01:02:

What Lies Benith was the movie that made my gf hate the horror movies, something she used to enjoy before...

I still made her watch Ringu 1 and 2 about a year ago.... She refuses to see Ringu 0...

that's what i thought until i saw the ring

Posted by MisterOpus1 on Apr-14-2003 14:38:

Ok, call me a little slow here, but I just rented the Ring last night, and thought it was pretty good. Some holes in the plot here and there, however, really confused me. For example,

How did the tape get made in the first place?
What's the tape all about? Is is the girl's nightmare or something?
Most importantly, why didn't the lady and her son die at the end? What did they do that was different?

I'd really appreciate it if someone explained this to my dumbass. And sorry if this ruins it for anyone who hasn't seen it. Just skip this if the answers are given.

Posted by trancEyes22 on Apr-14-2003 14:44:

yeah i have to agree with mister opus. the movie was ok, but def did not deserve all the hype it got. and if you thought it was scary- YA'LL ARE PUSSYS!!! that movie made me laugh!! oooh, a girls face turned green after seeing a disturbing child? yeah pretty scary... there were a ton of holes in the plot too. the story had a lot of potential, but it somehow didnt turn out as i expected.

Posted by UWM on Apr-14-2003 14:58:

I actually just watched this for the first time yesterday too. It was nothing special IMO. I don't think one part of it actually scared me.

MisterOpus ... the mother and son did not die because they both were responsible for making copies of the tape. The little girl just 'wanted to be heard' and they were helping spread her message.

Ahh, thanks. That clears a little bit up for me. Still kinda wondering how the tape got made in the first place, and what it's all about. The images in the tape were pretty damn cool and scary. Does the sequel in Japanese clear that up at all? Or is it just one of those horrific mysteries that need no explanation?
