Bears are wild animals. Unless they're defending their young or maybe a kill in especially lean times, there's no evolutionary reason for them to risk an injury in a confrontation, even if the risk is relatively small. Most wild animals are the same way, except a few psycho ones like wolverines. :-)

But in the case of domestic dogs, especially certain kinds bred for aggression and bravery, this strong self-preservation instinct has disappeared.

Makes sense. I guess it's the fact that they are just massive and can turn into killing machines when they want that always makes me wonder why they run away from much smaller animals.
