Possible Miami in March Killer

This could be the what puts the final nail in the Coffin for Miami in March. They have no qualms about it that they are going after the Miami clientle.

If I wasn't going to amsterdam the following week I would be checking this out.

Phase 1: The phase one lineup for the inaugural festival is looking strong, with Jamie Jones, Dubfire, DJ Tennis, Lee Burridge, Adriatique, Thugfucker, Blond:ish, Francesca Lombardo and Psychemagik all confirmed.

SXMusic Festival

Here's where the issue comes in.... You can't group Ultra and WMC together because they aren't together

March 15 to 18 Ultra/MMW
March 21 to 24 WMC

We know if you're doing business these days you're probably going to skip WMC and go to IMS or ADE.

Does Ultra have the drawing power to bring in the number of people every single year to keep Miami relevant?

I think so. It's the second biggest event in the US in my eyes and there's still a large group of party people who don't travel abroad.

I think WMC's relevance is over now scheduling outside of MMW/Ultra week... you can ignore that I mentioned WMC in my prior post.

the clubber that would consider going to St. Maarten for a few days for some good underground djs is very different (for the most part) from those going to Ultra.

don't get me wrong this new party looks cool... just saying I see no meaningful impact on MMW parties.

So what you're saying is the underground artists aren't coming for MMW only WMC the following week?

I can tell you now that's just not true. I've just lost bookings for that week because of this event.

MMW/WMC/Ultra all relied heavily on European dollars and with the resurgence of the $ vs. the Euro, those european are looking for other places where their Euro goes a lot further, places like Mexico where every Euro = 18 pesos or Saint Martin where you can use euros depending which side of the island your on or convert to the ANG where every euro you're getting 2ANG.

I just don't see the massive support coming for just a party week considering the plethora of options around or near the same exact time in locations the exponentially cheaper than Miami.

Posted by ucforange on Nov-18-2015 20:09:

I don't think it's just Ultra that brings people to Miami for WMC/MMW. The boat parties, pool parties, non-stop events at all sorts of clubs, etc are a big draw. Honestly I thought MMW was pretty damn busy this past March. Maybe MMW won't draw as much as it used to, but it isn't going to cease being relevant any time soon.

As a Floridian, I love MMW. Don't need to spend $$$ on flights and extensive traveling to get a festival or series of events at an overseas hotspot. To me it really is up there with the big-time European events and festivals. Don't really get all the hate for the one major event each year that us Floridians have in our back yard. ADE is great but outside of Awakenings, I thought the venues were kinda lacking. Don't get me wrong, it's a great week long party as well but let's be honest, some of the venues and parties are wildly inconsistent.

I'm actually looking forward to checking out Amsterdam again in the summer time, and going to one of their outdoor mini festivals that they seem to have every weekend. ADE in October is dreary with the rain, 50 degree weather, and early nightfall.

Another thought: even if other events are taking away DJs from MMW, the electronic music universe is so big that I don't think venues will have a hard time coming up with another lineup. MMW is a proven money-maker and if DJ XYZ isn't coming because he's got a gig elsewhere, he will be replaced by another DJ who's just as good. Who knows, maybe it'll lead to more interesting and rare lineups and parties. Some of the best shows I've been to have been the DJs that I have often overlooked...

I'm not giving it any hate. I'm giving you a different perspective. I love MMW/WMC as well but I'm also not going to blind and think that it will be around forever. I'm giving you the other side of the coin from throwing parties, from what the agents are telling me, what the artists are telling me. More and more every year artists are skipping on Miami. Just this week I had offers out for a few guys that were just waiting on signatures and boom they aren't accepting because they are going to Saint Martin, for the exact same reasons I just mentioned above.

The euro is weak.
Miami is expensive (especially in March)
There are options that are out there that offer better money for your dollar.

Not at all. I don't think there will be many parties to speak of during the offical WMC dates. We shall see of course and you know more about that than I do at this point (possible WMC date parties).

Just because you can't book a few djs during MMW because they are doing this other event doesn't mean the tens of thousands of clubbers going to Ultra or Liv to see EDM djs will change their plans.

The other issue is just in general its no longer necessary to go to Miami in March to see your favorite djs, even underground ones. Most of the big ones tour all the time now and when you throw in the mix festivals and events like EDC, Time Warp, the ID&T events, Life in Color, ADE, BPM, Ibiza, etc. There are so many more options now to see your favorite djs over the year that's in my opinion the biggest thing that will lead to less attendance (slow decline) in Miami... you can now get your fill of partying and favorite djs via many more options.

That was going to be my next point. We get these guys multiple times throughout the year.

I've just seen a decline over the past few years and this is year is shaping up to be even more of the same.

We do have a nice boat party lined up March 18th

have you heard of anyone trying to do parties during the 'wmc' dates? just curious...

Posted by Faceplant on Nov-18-2015 21:26:

Because it's so hard for these guys to catch a flight from st martien to Miami? Isn't Miami international the main hub for the Caribbean? Sounds like more easy access to talent in the area for the Miami party throwers

Miami also has something nobody besides Brooklyn really has and that is the warehouse type events.

I haven't but it's also super early. I know there will be WMC parties though. Just no idea who or on what scale.

It's not hard but the guys I was looking at are just going to stay on the island because they would rather spend 5 days in Saint Martin then Miami.

We have one off warehouses. Those really aren't consistent and they are nothing like the Brooklyn warehouses, doesn't even come close to that. Nobody in Miami does a warehouse party like they do in Brooklyn.

Last year there were so many parties it was impossible to keep track. Not EDM/Ultra I;m talking house and techno. I was updating a Facebook group with events and literally there were multiple per day announced from New Years right up until week of. Maybe Miami will slide off the radar but its going to take years. This theory gets brought up every couple of months.

Posted by BPM_PHL on Nov-19-2015 03:30:

Resident advisor keeps all the events up. On any scale the amount of talent and parties is impressive

Miami will always be an event destination in March... being the old clubber I am, I used to always look forward to going to WMC with such anticipation as that in many cases was the 1 time a year I got to see dj so-and-so.... that's no longer the case for anyone I can name.... hence why after going 12 of the past 13 years I skipped it earlier this year may do so next year (for reference I did Ibiza in Sept, ADE in Oct, going to BPM in Jan, and this event in St. Maaretn looks more appealing to me than dealing with MMW headaches). I know i'm not the only one who is doing this now based on my many friends be it industry or just house music fans. I predict that Miami will slowly retreat into a very fun week for music fans to go to Miami but at some point will no longer be a "can't miss" time anymore...

even the 18-24 year old EDM fans have so many options as fun as Miami is they didn't grow up with that being the only option for so many events at one time.

I for the most part agree: Miami will continue to be a popular destination for MMW but maybe it won't be quite as big as it has in the past. Still, MMW will boast an impressive amount of parties and events for at least the next 5 years or so.

But can we just agree that Miami itself is what makes that place so damn amazing to party in? NYC may have more "legit" warehouse parties but never I have been anywhere, save for Awakenings itself at Gashouder can compare to the vibe you get in Miami for the really good parties. Between the palpable energy, the people getting down on the floor, and the crazy hot Latina girls, the vibe is simply unmatched. Maybe Ibiza but as I've never been there I couldn't say for sure.

Drinks and accommodation might be expensive in Miami especially for that week in late March but it's a world-class nightlife spot. How many places with bad soundsystems can you even name in that city? Looking at Trade, Space, Treehouse, Story, etc, they all have great sound. When I went to ADE, the only place that even had good sound was Awakenings. The other three venues ranged from straight up bad sound (the Heidi/Steve Bug party at "Barkode") to merely adequate (Mobilee Warehouse and trance party at Westerunie).

I LOVE going out in Miami personally. Though Art Basel week interests me more now that MMW lol.

I usually try and make it to Miami 1 weekend a year not during MMW anyway just for fun.

and totally agree it will be a long time before you see any meaningful decline in Miami parties in March (if it happens at all).
