Question What a president needs

I was wondering: what does a president need to do a good job? Education, culture, influence, ...?

The reason I'm asking it is because my country is electing today its new President (almost all electronic ballot boxes were already checked) , and so far, the winner will be a person from the working class that didn't finish high school ("Lula" da Silva) and who's the leader of the left wing. I've heard that Tony Blair was from working class as well, but it seems so odd for us (we're used to instructed people from the right wing). So what do you guys think? What does a president need?

i heard so many things about that Lula guy i hope he's gonna eradicate poverty from brazil

1. Leadership
2. Reason

That's the top two, anyway, IMHO

Our premier for Alberta, Ralpha Klein didnt finish high school and was a big drunk. He has done extremely well with running our province and has eliminated our deficit.

i think leadership, commonsense and logic, and an open mind are good skills to have.

Yeah, he's got leadership, that's for sure. Otherwise, he would never have made it (he was an ordinary worker and became the president).

However, I'm affraid of his logic/reason/commonsense skills

In the last debate before the elections, his opponent (is that the proper word?) was a lot more confident and wise, while he was giving "empty" answers, in my opinion.

mmm I think people haven't noticed the political forum yet

Tony Blair is from the working class yes, but he finished school, and went to university, he's also extremely intelligent
If you want to know what a president needs, watch the west wing

The biggest thing a president needs is some level of charisma, and prior goverment expereience. Because during there campaigns, and even while there in office others write there speches, they just have to deliver them in a way that draws peoplet to them. Additionally, at least in the U.S, most of there decisions are made off the advice of others. So here I think you just need, some experience, good speaking skills, and smart people around you.

by the way, BRAVO to Lula and the Brazilian people for choosing democraticaly someone who want to enhance the way people live in Brazil. Eliminating poverty is of course impossible (even in Canada we have poor people), but enhancing the living condition of the majority is what really counts!

I read alot of good things about how his party ruled some states of Brazil and how some of the poorest favelas got transformed to nice and clean quarters!

again BRAVO for Lula and to Brazil. I hope this left turn will turn out good and show a good example to the rest of the south american dicatators/right wingist.

but also watch out for the "westerners" who don't like this and will do anything to wreck it... starting by bringing your currency down, strangling your economy in any way possible, etc....................... then they can bitch about how the leftist are bad evil people

Every President needs a Monica Lewinsky

i think a president needs military background.

Posted by KaNoS on Oct-29-2002 15:29:

Any leader needs to know how the game works. A political leader has to know how politics know, how to compromise and who to back up and who to face. The background doesnt really matter that much, theres been good leaders from almost every background.
Experience in governing is the key.

It's happened already: 4 months ago, 1 real was worth 2 dollars. Now, you need 4 reais to buy 1 dollar

That's why I didn't buy Godskitchen compilation: every imported product now is way too expensive for us And that was because they were affraid Lula could win What now?

congrats to lula being elected, i hope he serves you brazilians well

what does a president need... as arbiter said, Reason and Leadership. i also think a good educational background or at least the capacity to learn and comprehend informations well.
what i do belive is very under-rated and probably the single most important thing for a president is his advisors. yes, the president alone can not decide and know about everything, he has to have a very talented group of people to 'advise' him on what to do. some may say the advisors actually have more power then the president himself. thats why before voting its important to see who the candidate surrounds himself with.

Posted by cycloptor on Oct-29-2002 23:06:

only 1 person has said it really....charisma. you need people to like you in order for them to vote for ya. other than that, great advisors and people around you... look at dubya for crap sake.

NO!!!

John Howard, Prime Minister of Australia is probably the best politician you have ever seen - however he is absolutely useless as a leader. Not only is he a career politician (meaning no charisma or leadership skills whatsoever), he will gladly sacrifice in the name of political gain. In our last election (only a couple of months after Sept 11), he was manipulating things, talking about terrorists and protecting borders and shit - he's done nothing like that, all he has done is be boring...
