Afghan Woman Barbarically Lynched After Being Falsely Accused of Burning Quran (NSFW)
"Defend Islam. Don't be an infidel."
Notice how the cops eventually react.

Of course. Nobody needs to go through an "Enlightenment" period to realize how fucked up this is on all sorts of levels. If you watch the entire video, simply killing her wasn't enough. They weren't sure what to do with the body - someone yelled out to throw her into the river and let the dogs eat her, but eventually they settled on burning her - some men using their own scarves for the fire, as they couldn't set her aflame due to all the blood.
Just goes to show that this sort of "extremism" and "radical" Islam is not just about ISIS and jihadists, it's more than that.

yeah thing is the religion in question is pretty much 100% to blame for the lack of education and the endurance of ignorance. while the western world more or less revised its religion and moved on from the dark ages the largest part of the muslim countries kept with the old ways and stayed there.

See, I don't know about this. Sounds like an oversimplification of what actually happens. To me, it's just cheap to blame a book for people's ideologies instead of blaming people themselves. This is complex and complicated.

It's disgusting, but you seem to take the thought of enlightenment to narrowly.
When you hear that word, it's not about some spiritual coming of age - it's quite the opposite; it's about realizing that religion is bollocks and by relying on logic, fact and science, rather than fairytales you get a more educated, empathetic and reasonable population.
Also religion (nearly all of them) are designed to keep certain people down and restricted (women, non-believers, the infirm) because of crazy superstitious belief.
When societies step away from religion being their moral guidance, countries suddenly grow the fuck up and stop treating other people, women and animals like shit.
Yes, people are to blame but it's because their source of knowledge comes from some ancient book and hideously outdate
I will say though it's a little bit rich that you as a farily devout G_D fearer yourself keep posting thing about how bad other religions are.
Foe every video you post of muslims doing something awful, I can post something of Mossad or Israeli police doing something just as abhorrent.
For instance, here's a video of Israeli police assassinating two girls (16 & 13) because they got in a fight with an elderly relative. They tried to cover it up saying it was a another knife attack but it turned out the girl was coming from school and was trying to protect her younger sister from the approaching men, with a pair of scissors from her school bag.
NSFW and GRAPHIC
In other words, your all just as bad as each other.

How is "logic, fact and science" supposed to make people more empathetic and less likely to commit such horrendous acts?

No, I'm pretty sure that's mainly Islam. You know, the one that still brutally murders people for allegedly burning their "holy" book.

I've lived in an orthodox community in Israel, and I haven't seen any of this. How about you?

So you need some additional knowledge to realize it's wrong to beat, kick, and club a woman to death, run over her and drag her beneath your car for over 300 feet, then - after she was already likely dead - throw stones at her body and burn it? All this because she supposedly burned a Quran (don't forget, she was considered a devout Muslim herself).

You mean religion. Yeah, I'm posting a pretty shocking video to shed light on what's going on in the world.

You're seriously going to compare the OP vid and this one? To me, it does look like a knife attack, and I don't think the Israeli police had the time to stop and ask questions, seeing her like that (of course due to the near-daily knife attacks in Israel, and whatnot).
And I'm just curious - where is the factual evidence that the girl was trying to protect her sister, rather than try and knife another Jew?

The point I was trying to make is that I don't think the problem is the book, but the man who reads it and is taken by it.

Here's the problem. It is the individual that becomes fanatic, you can't blame ideas and faith. What happens in this video is mass hysteria and panic veiled as an islam lynching. These dudes just wanted to kill someone.

revise the book and you won't have that problem. humans were savage barbarians if you go far enough back. creating religion was a way of dealing with that among other things. further modernizing religion as time passed and society evolved kept the progress of education, technology, etc. possible. refusing to overlook some of the real retarded stuff that are in the religious books denied that progression. the heart of the problem is living strictly by rules of a religion that was made forever ago.
edit: I'm anti all religions, but I realize that islam is by far the most dangerous one because of the reasons above and what it has led to.

Because what comes along with those elements are reason and understanding. Educate people, make them rely less on religion and more on knowledge and you end up with less violence and less stupid superstition.
There's a reason religion wants to keep people and especially women uneducated; it's keeps dumb and easily swayed men in line.
Lack of education and blind reliance on fairy tales are reasons the video like the one you posted exist.

No, the Chinese are killing muslims for being the wrong faith. Christians in Africa are putting people in burning tires because they belong to the wrong faith. Isreali's kill thousands of Palestinians just to nail a few terrorists, all in the name of religious "freedom".

I lived next to golders green in London (so you know what I'm talking about) and I live very close to a big orthodox community here. There's certainly no violence (it would not be tolerated here) but I see the rampant suppression of women every single day, forced to wear wigs and cover themselves, have 5 kids in the early 20's, married off to much older (I mean elderly in some cases) men all to conform to yet another religion that has one set of rules for them, and another for men.
Me and the missus met a local orthodox businessman here just a few weeks ago. He shook my hand then refused to shake my wife's hand for religious reasons. Needless so say that meeting went no further.
Sure, it's not burning people in the street for insulting some silly book, but there's plenty of other things that happen in the name of your religion that are abhorrent.
Let's not get in to it again ans understand, aside from Buddhism (which can be argued is more a philosophy) all religions are bonkers, violent and hopefully soon a thing of the past.

You can say "what you think you see" but what you see is three guys chasing and then unloading guns at point blank range in to teenagers. They confirmed it's a pair of scissors. It was not that old chesnut again, a "knife attack" (ever notice how now when anyone gets show at a checkpoint, it's a "knife attack").
You should really just say it's awful and disgusting to see someone do that to what is clearly a teenage girl and her even younger sister (who clearly looks liek a child) and take it on the chin, but instead you offer hypocritical explanations as to why they didn't have time to assess the situation.
They keep doing head shots once she's face down on the ground.
there's no excuse and you should stop trying, in the same way there's no excuse for lynching that woman, even if she had a pair of scissors.

Afghanistan is a mess after the Cold War: It made perfect sense during the Russian invasion for the Americans to tip Afghans towards extremism - until the extremists bit the hand that fed them. Not to mention Pakistan benefits from Afghanistan being a failed state, so there's that.
By the way, let's not flatter ourselves here. Some 300 years ago, Thomas Aikenhead was executed for blasphemy in Scotland. A 300 year interval is nothing but a lull in the history of a religion that spawns millennia, we need be careful not to flatter ourselves here.

I've been thinking about it, and I suspect there's a cultural difference here.
Unless a third Brazilian chimes in and joins the "Death to Islam!" brigade, it's not uncommon that we from the South America see Northerners as unreasonably intolerant, whereas they from North America see us Southerners as wide-eyed naive idealists.
If you follow Brazilian history from the outset, you can see something of a pattern: We are quick to assimilate and slow to negotiate. The Portuguese came and shagged the natives (quick assimilation) and then long after wars of independence rocked the Americas the royal family decided to declare Brazil an independent country - with little to no bloodshed, the Portuguese just made sure the change was as gradual and painless as possible. This is true to this day: We're not fond of conflicts (something you get accustomed to when revolutions are part of your history) and our Arabs just mingled with the rest of the population and gave us... Sabrina Sato!
If you study American history, you can see something of an opposite pattern: They are slow to assimilate, but quick to defend what they believe in. Americans themselves declared their own independence (nearly half a century before the Portuguese granted our independence), and immigrants arrived with their families so there were fewer Pocahontas getting all chummy with the newcomers. Then there was the Civil War and the One-Drop Rule, which repeated the pattern. On the upside, this means they had an amazing civil rights movement that would be unthinkable here, because we're still making up our minds over who is(n't) black and what to do with inequalities, but this makes "us versus them" mentality much easier, methinks. There's a reason 36% more people described themselves as mixed race here.
COR version: I believe it's a shaggy thing - Bang Arabs and you'll see they're the bomb. Don't bang Arabs and you'll be afraid of their bombs.

This is what I've been banging on about in this thread and others; Islam (en masse, not including some of the moderate and incredibly forward thinking muslims that I regard as close friends) is just a few hundred years behind the other religions.
They need to educate and grow up. The good thing is, as much press as the evils of islam gets, as a religion as a whole, it's becoming less and less devout, and just like Christianity and Judaism, is becoming more and more wateredf down.
Sure, now we have camera phones and instant news it may seem like it's more than ever, but it's not - go back 100, even 50 years, lynchings and public stoning were common place, every day occurrences, but they did not even make the news in their own local paper, let alone a international new network.
Over time, and as everyone (muslim nations included) become more furious with the extremists, the result will be the dilution of islam. It will take a few hundred years sure, but what we're seeing in the grand scheme of things is the crumbling latter stages of Islam being a devout and literal religion. In 500 years time it will be about as relevant as Christianity in the developed countries.
Think about it - several rubicons have been crossed in the last few years.
For instance, all religions had a rule that forbade the mocking (in in islam, one step further, just innocent depiction) of god or his prophet, and it was done because when you draw or worse mock something it loses it's power and gravity.
We had the cartoonish depiction of mohammed in a global publication. That can't be taken back and we've seen more since and we'll continue to. That taboo is now broken and the response will be less and less.
To Kenny's point, crowds do change people in to much more primal and dangerous mindsets, but that's an incredibly basic generalization.
I've been to muslim countries and met amazing people. Most just want to get out of poverty and have safety for the family. Some can get power about their lot and escape their inevitable stricken path by aligning with extreme elements, but if you give people mobility outside of religion, education, means, opportunity etc, then you see a direct correlation of for reliance on religion.
It's quite like hardcore nationalism - when you aint got nothing, you grip on that flag as hard as you can.

Actually, this is part of the things we have in common.
Ever heard of "Jair Bolsonaro"? You possibly have, but in case you haven't (and for the benefit of non-Brazilian TA's), he's a horrible person but an incredibly shrewd politician (much like Trump). Originally from a party that belongs to the ruling coalition, he made his career opposing the president as the poster child of the Brazilian far right. Think about it for a second - it's as if Obama's greatest rival was a Democrat and belonged to the opposite extreme of the political spectrum (or if Cameron's arch-nemesis was a UKIP-wannabe Liberal Democrat before last year's elections).
The one difference, however, is that unlike Trump, Bolsonaro belongs to a minor party (thought there's a grass-roots movement trying to propel him all the way to presidency).
