How long did you wait to buy?

Ok, I have liked electronic music (in varying forms) for a couple years now. Whenever I'm at my computer I always have something playing I rarely listen to any other genre of music. I am currently looking for gear to start DJing but I have a question. How long did you all wait before you decided DJing was for you? My older brother has been into the music a lot longer than I have and is pretty knowledgable (more into techno) but has never seriously attempted DJing. He keeps telling me I should wait and listen to the music longer before I dive into something like this. I know I love the music but should I wait til I obtain a better ear for the music or learn by doing? Thanks for any comments

well, if you know you want to get into djing, you shouldnt wait.

first off, before you put any cash down for turntables, find a style of music that suits you, and that you want to spin....

when you start try and keep it to one genre, but once you get better, you may want to branch out and try other genres.

to start, your gonna need a good deal of cash. the more money that you can spend, the better. the better tables u start with will mean more time untill you have to buy new ones.

you wont need a top of the line mixer to start with, and one new mixer is alway cheaper than a set of new tables, so you can always buy a new, better mixer later on.

also, do you want to use vinyl, or cds? it sounds like you already have a lot of music on cds, or on ur pc that u could burn onto a disc, so i would recommend cd tables.....

for that, you will have to consult someone else, becuz i spin on vinyl...

i knew when just listening wasnt good enough... so i went to the computer but then i wanted soemthingmore flexable in real time... so i cashed in on turntables. this process, began two years ago when i first heard like...sandstorm or soemthing lol... i know im a noob but i love the music as much as anyone else. you have to love the music... i was reluctant becuase i never touched vinyl before and i didnt know anyone who was into djing but i took the chance becuase i knew that i would never stop.... just make sure that youre sure that you wanna do this beucase monitarly [is that a word?] in my opinion, theres no turning back. remember that its an expencive hobby.

yeah you can sell your equipment but....[in my opinion, as i said before] you lose money when you do that... and if youre gonna spend all that money only to sell...you might as welll not do it.

if you are thinking about it
pick a genre you like and start buying vinyl now
then you can start picking up equipment after a whiel adn you're sure you want to continue

but start buying vinyl immediately
and then get friendly with someone who has turntables

i wasn't sure if i wanted to get into djing or if this would be something i would wind up giving up on

once i went out and bought my first record, i was hooked
it just happened, i was out shopping and i stopped into the store and saw the vinyl sitting there, leafed through it and found a track i liked
the rest is history

i still have that track sitting in my record bag, it's still in heavy rotation

good points made here...but i think the one thing that is important is actually finding someone with decks and trying it. THAT's how i got hooked....one random night at a friend's apt 2 years ago. i left with PvD's "for an angel" ringing through my head and a desire to spin that has never left me since. all it took, was 3 hrs...2 watching him spin for his webradio show, and 1 of me trying for the life of me to beatmatch. everything else will come soon after...addiction to the wax, the desire to buy more and more and more equipment, hanging out at local record stores, browsing more online forums like TA...g'luck dude.

i dunno if you should wait. But like if you are not sure that your love for trance or electronic music is merely a one off thing just because you like a song on the television that sounds electronic. If you are serious about Dj culture then you have to love the music. It's like buying a guitar. You must love playing the music that you will play on guitar and image is nothing compared to the love. Personally i waited for ages! like about five years for my decks. I couldnt save up that long, but i eventually got a pair of decks last year. I have not regretted it one bit. So just remember if you love it go for it with no hesitation.

I waited about 6 months, because I force myself to wait a certain amount of time before i buy anything expensive. This is my way of avoiding those nasty impulse buys. e.g. radion control helicopter, car, computer, playstation, triple-clamp forks for my bike, 4 speakers, harmon/kardon cd deck, etc etc.

Talk about waiting. I waited about a month for my first radio shack mixer. I waited another year for my first real mixer. Then another year for my first CDJ unit (only one, so I could only mix one cd into another but not the other way). 3 months later I got my second. Over a year and a bit later I got my first turntable. I have a regular friday spot playing at a gym and I still don't have 2 turntables at home.

Wait to find a style that you definately like and will stay with for a long time.

Before when i was new to records and such, i started buying deep house records, then hard house, techno, drum and bass, then trance then progressive. About 20% of the records i have i dont play. I guess its a waste. Decide on your style first.
