Worst neighbor hood outside of US?
I was thinking about some very bad neighborhoods in the States (much of Baltimore, East St. Louis, basically all of Washington D.C except for where the government is, etc.) and was wondering what other really bad places (i.e go there at your own peril) there were in your neck of the world.
U.S people, please bring up another neighborhood if you can think about it.
i have a kind of a similar question : richest us state ? poorest us state ?
umm you cant go wrong with saying south Detroit. alt its not AS bad as it seems, and i think Muskegon has a higher rate of crime in Michigan.
as for richest/poorest not sure. seems like a fact someone else could look up tho|
richest states? i would guess california (hollywood, music industry), and texas (oil).... i do believe that washington state is also pretty wealthy (there are MANY of the forbes top list that reside there)... and obviously new york simply b/c of the huge industry in EVERYTHING....
worst neighborhoods? i would vote for south-central L.A, b/c you can get shot just for driving down the wrong street. Best neighborhoods? Ironically, just 'down the street' from south central, is beverly hills, possibly one of the ritziest communities on the planet... also maybe malibu, the living there is spectacular... maybe carmel region as well (mostly all in california if you noticed)...
i'd also say south beach, miami... a lot of money and good stuff down there... Manhattan upper east side - not really "nice", but ritzy... Aspen, CO has serious money and sick houses, and just north of Ft. Lauderdale, FL in Hillsboro, there is the famed "hillsboro mile", with 20+ million dollar homes along the beach for, (you guessed it), about a mile.... some of these homes look like high schools, one looks like a shopping mall, one looks like the taj mahal... just ridiculous.
Well, around where I live, you see homeless people all over, begging for money. Last year, someone got mugged at gunpoint right infront of the Lash Miller Chemical Labs, just across the street from where I live.
Hmm, I used to live around jane&finch, in toronto, aparantely littered with drug dealers and crime. There were like, 4 shootings this weekend in Toronto, bringing the homocide count to 45 this year, which I guess isn't alot compared to US counterparts.
But, a couple a years ago, my family went down to stay with my uncle for 2 weeks in the Bronx. He had just come to the country with his family, (wife and 3 kids), and they lived in an apartment that was literally the size of 3 of my dorm rooms. He had been there for 2 months, and had already had people try to mug him. Kids were letting off cherry bombs right beside our car while we were stopped at a red light. My mom was like "roll up the windows!"
I've also been to other parts of New York, detroit, miami, atlanta. Never been west though.
So, relative to that experience, Toronto looks pretty safe.
i believe that the richest state in the U.S. is (sadly) New Jersey, while the poorest is West Virginia... that's what was brought up in a sociology class...
as for bad neighborhoods in the rest of the world... think of places in south africa... Johannesburg is supposed to be really bad; it's ridiculous what happens there... people get murdered while waiting at a light while someone tries to steal their car... among other things...

South Central Los Angeles isn't a place you want to be. EVER.
the city i live (edmonton).....in the first half of there year there was more murderes than in brooklyn..queens...bronx...etc
damn asian gangs

If you're ever in Sydney, don't go to Lakemba or Cabramatta... Lakemba is where people do drive-by shooting on police stations and 15 y/o girls get pack raped. Cabramatta is where all the Asian heroin trade is concentrated, people literally walk up to you on the street and say "you wanna score" and show u a knife .. so u have no choice, u hafta buy some drugs....
South Africa is supposedly one of the most dangerous westernised countries in the world for crime - carjackings, home invasions, the whole shebang...
south africa is crazy, i believe a police officer gets shot (dead) every 36 hours, don't know about 'normal' people tho..
"Bijlmermeer" (suburb of Amsterdam)
Full of junkies, poor people, crime etc etc. It's also the place where a El-Al cargo Jumbo hit an apartment building (pic)
But still a heaven compaired to any ghetto in the US. The worst place is shopping centre 'Kraaiennest'.

The Sopranos
I live in a town of about 300,000 ppl, its an industrial town, so its more likely to have more poverty, the area's in Northampton are the whole of the East side of town is very rough, Blackthorn and Bellinge, are the worst, the other area towards the west side is Kings Heath. Its not like Compton or Watts where u get shot for no reason, theres the occasional murder, and quite a few stabbings, but if u walk along minding your own business you can very easily be approached by a gang who will give you a wee kicking. The area where I'm from in Northampton is quite bad in parts it always seems to have the murders aswell, its a working class area, and has a lot of Carribean immigrants, because the UK is quite small often gangsters who say do work in London or Birmingham live in towns near the cities, and theres quite a lot of Yardies in my area, a few months back they done a bust on a few houses to get some local Yardie who murdered two rival gangsters in London, they went through his house and it was like a mini armoury.
In the UK we don't really have guns career criminals and some people have them. I've worked with ppl from the States, and they said to me if guns were as available in the UK as they were in states the UK would easily have a worser murder rate for its population, the reasons the fact Uk is a rich country, its very very very poor aswell, plus a lot of the population in the UK can be very antisocial, and after a few beers instead of a punch up if they had pistols well you know the score.
Worse areas overall in the UK have to be Moss Side, Longsight, Cheatnam Hill, and Salford in Manchester. Its like 1920's fucking Chicago in the UK, very very very high murder rate easily on par or higher then some American cities. London is very rich and a nice city but some areas in South London like Brixton, Peckham and Deptford are dodgy, it has like crime waves that die down, all due to gang wars basicially, so one week about 15 ppl can get gunned down dead the next week 2 its weird, but its not as bad as Manchester.
Northern Ireland. Well a lot of you know the score behind the troubles, and a lot of it ends up on the streets, Belfast and Derry all have dodgy areas,County Amagh too is notorous for shootings in some parts, even though theres a ceasefire and peace process (well going through a dodgy patch atm), theres still a lot of frequent shooting and beatings, say your police informer and your in protective custody, likely chances one of the groups once your exposed as a informer will find your family smash one of your family members kneecaps in with baseball bats or shoot their kneecaps, or shoot or blow up the whole family it depends on the team who doe's the job, theres a lot of history behind it and its not something money can solve.
Richest state total:I would assume either California or Texas
Richest per capita:Once again, this is an assumption but I'd venture something small and ritzy like Connecticut.
Poorest:Mississippi and West Virigina would have to be there. So would Montana and Wyoming. The Dakotas as well I would guess.
According to the US Census www.census.gov :
Richest and poorest states based on Per Capita(per person)Income in 1999:
Richest:
Connecticut-28,766
District of Columbia-28,659
New Jersey-27,006
Massachusetts-25,952
Maryland-25,614
Poorest:
Mississippi-15,853
West Virginia-16,477
Arkansas-16,904
Louisiana-16,912
Montana-17,151
Notables:
Texas:19,617
California:22,711
There are some rough areas where I live (Nottingham, UK), not sure if any of the UKTAs saw the program about Nottingham crime the other week on BBC1
Showed stuff like this guy unconscious on the street in the middle of a residential area in the middle of the day because some drug dealers came and beat him shittless over a drugs thing. That program didnt show the worst thing of all though, there's these two rival areas, both really rough, called St Anns and The Meadows, and basically, gangs from one place go into the other, kill some people and keep the score, like a football game. I know of one guy, called TJ, hes my age (16), and hes in jail for murder after he shot someone from St Anns and dumped their body in a canal
They're pretty fucked areas alright......

IronDragon, you are right about West Side Baltimore into the Catonsville/Arbutus Area. Unfortunatly I was lived there for close to 4 years. Most people lived there are either Gang Banger wanna be or hobos that ask for money every day of week. Now I know there are people who disagree with me. I believe that it is not right to ask me the same question every single day. "So, are you Chinese or Japanese." Thank god I moved out; baltimore people have to learn what it feels like for me to live with them.
