Chrono Break
Word has it squaresoft is busy at work on the 3rd (4th really if you count Radical Dreamers) installment of the Chrono series (Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross)
the Chrono series are my favorite RPG's. I hope square does another good job, and hopefully wont drag it on further than they should.
Chrono Trigger was fucking amazing at the time (one of the first with multiple endings if not the first). Chrono Cross sucked big hairy donkey dick as far as im concerned. It was the first game i decided to just get the walkthrough and finish it. I never do that with games.
CC was definately not like CT, but it was a great game. If you were approching it expecting another CT clone than you deserve what you got. CT was a much more simple story with very few preachy morals or complicated situations. Basically a group of kids found a way to travel through time and figured out that the world would be fucked in a thousand years, so they set off to fix it. Thats basically the premise of CT. Would CC have been a proper sequal if it followed the exact same format? It would just be CT with new characters and a new peril.
CT basically just tells the story of some kids and their journey to fix things. CC goes much, much deeper and digs into more of the backstory of CT, and the consequences of what they did.
WARNING: spoilers ahead!! dont read unless you have completed CT/CC or dont care!
Basically in CT, Crono and co. would go thru various time periods to try to stop a creature hiding in the earth that would emerge and destory it in 1999 (the present in CT is 1000). Eventually after changing history around a bit, they succeeded. And that was the game. CC goes much deeper into the story and expores the consequences of what happened in CT. Every time Crono and co would change history in the slightest way, history would split in 2. In one path, everything remained as it had been, tho Crono and everyone else wouldnt exist there any more. In the other would exist them and the alterations they made. So basically, even though they stopped the creature from destroying the earth in the world they exist in now, there were many parallel worlds in which they didnt, and the people were still suffering. Thats really CC in a nutshell. I admit CC didnt really have quite the feel that CT did that made it so special, it had a feel all its own. I think it would have been unfair to the CT series to give it a cheap sequal.
Oh well, you can tell Im a CT/CC nut
Hey i appreciate the synopsis, because i have to admit i dont remember shit from chrono cross. Thats what happens when you just go through a game to get through it. I just remember reading that there are some references to the first one in the second and i dont think i ever caught em. I think the only thing i remember liking is the tiny love story where the boy was supposed to meet up with the girl at the pier but he ends up getting transported to another world on teh beach only to never see her again. Im such a sucker for the love stories. Thats why FF8 is my fav RPG ever.
chrono trigger rules! never finished the game, i got stuck after they get to the central hub, but ive never played a game that had characters i genuinely cared about, outstanding!
i seriously think the only reason people hold onto the notion that chrono cross was good, only do so because of how much they liked chrono trigger.
because, lets face it, CC was really nothing more than an average rpg. maybe its because i play so many damn console rpgs, but it takes a lot for a game to stand out and be on a level above the others (dragon warrior 4, ff6, CT, xenogears, etc). but chrono cross really didnt have anything going for it. way too many characters, a plot that literally has nothing to do with chrono trigger except what, a few references to lucca?
i dunno. i really think the game only got a lot of hype because of the name attached to it. i feel the same way about final fantasy games. only one or two of them have actually been good, and the rest are just average. people just tend to put a lot more compliments into something which had a big name.
but about chrono break, id like to see where you have evidence that its going to be a game... as far as i knew, there was a reference of "chrono break"... which could be a game, could be a movie or anime series (tho tehres already a chrono trigger anime of sorts out), etc.
so yea. to summarize: chrono trigger was good, chrono cross was weak, and falls under the "average" category that in my opinion, 95% of console rpgs fall under nowadays.
final fantasy 6 is still the best ff there ever was imo. such depth in both the plot and characters. i was nearly in tears when celes was about to commit suicide
plus an excellent musical score from thee MAN, nobuo uematsu.
i agree.
1 was good for its time, 2/4 i really just didnt like. i dont know why everyone does. 5 was awful. 6 was the best... 7 would have been good had the ending not totally sucked. 8 was average. 9 was way too easy and you had the game spoonfed to you. 10 was destroyed by its ending.
ct rocked bad ass
i say the entire reason crono cross sucked was becuase akira toriyama the dragonball guy wasnt involved

i gotta disagree w/ people that say chrono cross sucked. i found the story and the dialogue to be way better than chrono trigger. i think the one thing that DID suck about chrono cross was the ending. oh well. the game got a freakin 10 from gamespot! ive never seen that happen before.
hmm... jzmhed, did you get the good ending and save kid from lavos? remember there are also like 8-12 or so extra endings you get in new game plus mode.
Oh well. Sothis I admit Im a rabid CT fan so maybe Im biased, but I really did enjoy CC. The story kind of strayed away from CT a bit, but in the end when everything was wrapped up, what happened in CT was corrected in CC (well, most of it anyways). And pretty much everything that serge got into was pretty much cased by lucca's fiddling (if I remember correctly, its been a while).
The one thing Im not sure if I liked in CC was the many characters. That kind of took away from the story focusing on serge/kid, then then again one of the nice things about CT is that there wasnt a whole bunch of sappy preachy backstory with all the characters. When you think about it, most CC characters got a decent back story, about as much as the characters in CT I suppose (again, its been a while).
Oh well, bottom line is I enjoyed it, not as much as CT but I think it was a great game. Thats really all that matters.
Chrono trigger ruled big time, one of the best rpgs for the snes.
Chrono Cross was a very nicely made game, more cute but with a less addicting scenario,i liked it very much though.Great music, pushed the ps to the limits of its graphics, nice gameplay..very fine.
Both brilliant games.
Anyway, anyone remembers breath of fire 2? that was awesome(similar to the ct style).
Square,we love you
BoF wasnt square, that was capcom
BoF 2 was the best BoF ever.
such a vivid storyline and the shaman combinations were an awesome touch.
CT is my favorite SNES game.. in fact I just finished playing through the whole game from the start (no plus mode). I'm looking for another RPG to play now.. any suggestions?
CT was absolutely brilliant for its time, I loved every minute of it.
BOF2 was also great (busy playing it again now, just rescued Spar).
FFX I thoroughly enjoyed, but my sis-in-law deleted my savegames by mistake when I had just gotten onto Sin, so I never saw the ending 9I sure as hell aint gonna play for another couple of days to get all that way again.
Funnily, the only rpg I ever got attached to the characters, was Phantasy Star 4 on the Genesis, and most ppl say that game is wank.
oh well...
