anyone who says it's crap isn't doing it right! 
you have to get it really hot for it to work - so your best using a bong to avoid thrashing your lungs, and you have to keep the flame on the salvia all the time.. also, you have to hold it in as long as you possibly can. do 3 or 4 big bongs in a row (dont pass it back and forwards) and you'll be utterly ******ed

Rather get some chemical stuff
It does give strong effects if done correctly. Unfortunately a lot of people find the smoke to hot and harsh to hold it long enough or take enough in. Smoke it like Fray says and the more you take per breath the better. The longer its held the better, too.
It has a long history of being used as a "teacher-plant" by medicine men of some tribe or another in America. 
You may find the experience fun but most often find it more spiritual. Not like acid. It has the abilty(ONLY if enough is taken) to completely place you in another place as a different 'thing' or person. People have become paint on the wall.
One of the most vivid effects I got was when I became a 5 yr old child from Pakistan sat on a dirty town square looking for my mum while soldiers were running towards me. Its a lot more detailed than that as I actually BECAME the child and recieved the memories, emotions and thoughts. Yes I know its odd but thats what it can do if done right.
It is easy to over hype the stuff though. Dont go into it expecting acid cos it wont happen. Its there to teach you things gently. NOt rip your world away and replace it with something similar to an acid trip or K-hole.
