need to open a password protected zip file, forgot the password!
I have a file that i zipped up of a bunch of important stuff. I password protected it.
unfortunately, i have forgotten the password and can't get my files.
honestly, these are my files, i just forgot the password!
anyway, i did a quick search on the net, and found an application from this site:
http://www.zipcure.com
it's shareware for 30 days apparently, but, when trying to use it, it pops up an ad and says "i just searched 10,000,000 passwords, do you want to register to see the results?"
Does anyone know what i can do to get my files back?
heh, shit happens.. can't help you, sorry..
*cough*get a crack/serial for it*cough*
Tip of the day:
instead of using passwords, rename the file with a lame name so nobody will ever open it. E.g.:
chihuahua_birth.mpg
boeing_engine.doc
wooden_shoes_factory.jpg
...

There are winzip p/w crackers out there; just have to look for them
As far as I know, the Zip compression password protection involves shifting around the encoded (zipped) file around.. That being said, it's almost equivalent of the RSA encryption: it's a one way easy-solvable problem... To backtrace the solution without the key/password would be in NP-hard. Which means we are unaware of any algorithm that can do it in polinomial time... So unless your zip file is veeeeery small and your password - very short (in which case you can brute-force though it with an appropriate program in matter of few hours/days at worse), methinks you're stuck... Sorry
That is, unless you are talking of some other form of protection that "winzip" offers...
If you still have some of the original unzipped files, there are password crackers which can crack it in a relatively short period, can't remember the names though...
If not, you, as k.k.d. wrote, have little chance of ever seeing those files again.

"zipfix" should do it. Search Kazaa for it or something.
hmm..
thanks for all the suggestions guys.
the file is very large, it's 436Mb
the password is relatively short, at least i am pretty sure it is. I was almost positive what i set it to, but then it wouldn't work.
so, i'm not sure if a brute force attack would work. Not sure what k.k.d meant when he posted (That is, unless you are talking of some other form of protection that "winzip" offers)
well.. it is winzip i used, just a simple password on the zip file, i didn't encrypt it or anything.
I'm almost ready to pay for the zipcure program. And no, i don't want to crack it, or install kazaa thanks.
in any case, i still have the original files, but it will be a huge pain for me to get them.
