Rasta Trippy Thread. wooooooooooo

I was just thinking!

What is human conciousness? "Information moving rapidly in a system of interconnected network of nurons in the brain."

As you know there's this thing that's been around for a while called the internet. Now you may have heard of it, I'm not sure!

The networks that give life to this phonomenon we call The Internet are getting faster and more information rich as time goes by. Half of the globe is now communicating in REAL TIME! just like the human brain.

NOW! is there a chance the planet could become self councious sometimes in the near future?

Even if it's a childinsh though I still like joggling it.

I love this sort of stuff.
Got any more?

so are you saying that the internet could grow a mind of it's own?? or the earth itself (not the beings that inhabit it)?

Many people have talked about the 'Singularity'...

"Sometime in the next few years or decades, humanity will become capable of breaking the upper limit on intelligence that has held since the rise of the human species. We will become capable of technologically creating smarter-than-human intelligence - perhaps through enhancement of the human brain, direct links between computers and the brain, or Artificial Intelligence. This event is called the "Singularity" by analogy with the singularity at the center of a black hole - just as our current model of physics breaks down when it attempts to describe the center of a black hole, our model of the future breaks down once the future contains smarter-than-human minds. Since technology is itself the product of intelligence, the Singularity is an effect that snowballs once it occurs - the first smart minds can create smarter minds, and smarter minds can produce still smarter minds."

Quoted from www.singinst.org

I guess this is similar to the idea you are talking about...

It's not so terrible because it's synthetic.
But what really freaks me out is the human psyche that is behind this.. that supports and creates all this and then negates it.

read the lankavatara sutra!

nope, i don't think the "internet" wil eventually develop some form of intelligence, as the main part if human conciousness is not the amount of information travelling around but the amount being processed by the neurons. Not to forget the massive input that has to be judged, processed and stored every second...

I believe that in say... a few thousand years... we will be able to use a lot more percentage of our brains. That's how we got to where we are now, and it only makes sense that we will increase the use of our brains in the future - so much of it goes to waste

Posted by SiM PeRf on Nov-06-2002 23:20:

even if it's becoming more and more brillant, etc...
human is still building them, controlling them, and it's human that makes them so powerful, so i don't think it could create itself a concioussness....the "best" that could happen is that human create a program which would have some function of the human brain....but never to a higher point than human....
(i'm french so it's kindda hard to express my opinion about that in english sorry)

Posted by DjSuez on Nov-07-2002 01:48:

well, there is this theory, which is based on some evidence, but still not convincing enough...

there is an existance of global consciesness (damn, how do you spell this word again... ). When something significant happens, like for instance the disaster with the twin towers (i take this example cause one test was taken just after this happened), the thoughts of humans all over the world influence a random flow of numbers running from a computer, for example: an hour of 6, 7 after the twin towers collapsed, most of the people on earth knew about it, and that's when the consciousness kicks in. There are some computers spread on earth, producing endless lines of random numbers, and when the consciousness of the human population gets negative, the randomness of the numbers gets influenced, like for example after the 11-9 happening there was suddenly a increased outflow of the number 3. the theory says so that a random something can be influenced by the HGC, or Human Global Consciousness.

and it's impossible that the internet gets an own mind...it has nothing to rely on, no instincts, no moral, no ideas, it just 'is'. and something that can't think, can't have an own will..

When they first came out with the telegraph back in the day people were comparing it to the human nervous system, because for the first time you could have instant communcation between different parts of the country (england then) like how your brains communicates with different parts of your body. Now we have the internet, which is 5 bazillion times more advanced than the telegraph, think of what we will have 50 years from now, which is totally within our lifetimes! The net hasn't really been around for that long whenyou think about it and see how much it has advanced... i remember being in middle school hangin out on IRC and having to TELNET (yeah, remember TELNET?) to cdnow.com... back then ppl were saying the Internet was gonna crash... but technology has kept up with it.

If ur into this shit u should check out the Anime series "Serial Experiements: Lain" (if u haven't allready). It's really trippy, VERY WELL DONE and very well dubbed as well... it's all about the world + technology growing to the point where it starts to develop a conscious of it's own, very Ghost in the Shell style... i think u'd like it.

Anyone ever seen Virtuosity?
Sid6.7?
He was a computer program that was very much evolving into his own person. Creepy idea. Especially if it turns out like Sid!

Anyway. Like you said, it's just fun to juggle the idea! hehehe...

Yeh virtuosity wasn't bad. AI + nano tech.

Singularity? black holes? I don't get it.

Do you kow what black hoels are?
Dying stars! their mass becomes so large that their gravity becomes infinate so that not even light can scape it. So light shining on it cannon be refelected back. So you don't see em.

That's a black hole!
