Paul Van Dyk @ Giant Village 2003

It's official!!! I checked out PVD's website and went to his list of upcoming gigs. He will be spinning @ GIANT VILLIAGE 2003, which is a 21+ event. It will be an open block party, located in the heart of downtown LA.

Hands down, I am definitely going. It should be a great New Year's Party, if not the best ever.

Anyone else going???

AFter wat happened last year.. i dont think so. Last year PvD and Sasha were scheduled to play... Sasha played 4 hours... PvD got in late and played 45 min. Very whack. I payed 65 bux and sat thru 4 hrs of boring prog to get only 45 min of PvD. If its a guaranteed 3 hr set then maybe ill go. 2 hrs would even be good. But if its gonna be anything like last year.. im not going. PvD is scheduled to play in San Francisco that same night and so im not sure. I know there will be delays gettin him from SF to LA.

F*** RIP out giant promoter probably going to do the
same thing year

you will pay $70 and $55 more for the afterparty!
i hate the way they do things so secret,
never announce the exact time or location til the last minute

This year's Giant NYE Party lineup will be amazing, so far only 3 headlining DJs have been officially announced with several more still in the works! So far, confirmed bookings of:

PvD
Danny Howells!!!
Luke Fair

This night is gonna be insane, just as last year's NYE was!!!! In regards to why PvD only spun for an hour and a half last year, his flight into LA was seriously delayed. Sasha was told of the situation and continued to spin, and he spun an amazing 4 hour set!! I'm guessing most ppl on this board are trance fans and not necessarily prog fans, but Sasha was phenominal! I'm hoping PvD will not have the same airline troubles this year, and expect him to close out the night @ Giant NYE. Also, expect a 2-3 hour set from PvD as well.

Giant NYE is definitely going to be the place to be in LA this year, again! Spundae has still not announced their lineup, but unless it's Diggers & Lawler, I'm definitely going to Giant!!

for more info, go to www.giantclub.com

See you all on NYE!!!!!!!!!!

Updated Giant Village 2003 NYE Party Lineup:

Paul Van Dyk
Danny Howells
Tall Paul
Mark Farina
Luke Fair
Mark Tabberner
DJ Colette
Sol
Justin Gourley
John Do

Tickets now on sale @ www.groovetickets.com for $65 each, will go up to $75 each starting in December!!

Note: Spundae still has yet to announce anything relating to NYE, but with Giant's lineup I dont see them being able to compete (unless Spundae somehow booked Digweed and Tenaglia)!!! See you all @ Giant!!!

THIS IS GOING TO BE SICK!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by wushuboy on Nov-09-2002 01:40:

forget giant.. i hate their events. And i must say... after having gone to new york and boston to go see pvd this past weekend im even more dissappointed by the crowd in LA. Its really different on the East Coast. Looking at Giant's lineup each DJ is gonna spin very short sets and that doesnt do the DJs justice. More than likely im gonna celebrate New Year's early and go to miami to see PvD spin at Space on dec 27th. 4 hr set. woohoo!! No way im gonna pay 65 bux to see PvD spin for just 1 hr. Giant.. bleh!

Posted by sebby on Nov-09-2002 03:43:

wushuboy, if you like the east coast better, then why are you living out here in LA? Besides, you never know what will happen. PVD might spin for 2 hours. I never saw him spin anyways, so it'll be a great experience for me. Lates.

Posted by Nastarte on Nov-09-2002 03:49:

wow. expensive. 65$ holy crap. i know there are some good djs there but geezz. they are playing records. though would like to see luke fair..

Posted by wushuboy on Nov-09-2002 06:46:

sebby... LA is a good place to live.. not a good place to party. Simple as that. If you to the parties here that feature trance djs you get all these drugged out asian thugs, old fobs, and worst of all ppl who dont know the music. Every time i've seen armin, ferry, or pvd in LA, the crowd sucks ass. Even when the djs signal for the crowd to clap their hands the crowd doesnt react. No appreciation. Its so bad. On the East coast however, the ppl know their shit. They really appreciate the DJ. Why on earth do you think DJs such as armin and pvd go to the east coast so often? Compare the number of times PvD or Armin have been to the East Coast to the number of times they've been to the West Coast. I've seen both scenes first hand. It's a much better vibe over there. Now.. that being said..that's just my observation of the scenes on each coast. That doesnt mean i dont like living in LA. I've lived in LA all my life and its a great place to live but as far as party vibe goes its pretty bad. IF you ever get a chance to party on the East Coast you'll understand what i mean.

Posted by YellowG555 on Nov-09-2002 07:00:

I have to agree with wushuboy!! LA trance scene sucks! Out of all the people who show up for Ferry or Armin at the Mayan, only a few stay to the very end of their sets. And when PvD comes to LA, he seems to play much more progressive and techno. Something tell me PvD doesn't really like the LA scene and that Giant must be paying him a lot of money to spin out here. Yes, Giant last NYE sucked ass. Giant also moved the last PvD party in June to some wack club in downtown that was way too small. All in all, Giant sucks ass.

Well dude look at it like this your lucky enough to even see PvD or Armin or which ever DJ your into. Atleast your not living in a place where these DJ's don't even perform at.

Posted by butterfly on Nov-10-2002 01:15:

i thought about coming out for this party mostly cause i want to see howells. i try to go to his party every month in new york. but we were speaking to him about NYE (and why he is ditching us for you guys) and he said he is only spinning for 2 hrs. out here we are used to 10 hr sets from him and we tried to use that as an excuse to convice him to stay with us for NYE but he is pretty psyched to go spin on the west coast for the first time.

but i don't think i can do LA for NYE cause i need to save $$ for WMC and i am still praying i somehow find a phish tik for NYE.

Posted by tranceaholic on Nov-10-2002 02:31:

i think it depends mostly on the club...spundae and ahp are top notch clubs with spme people that know about trance..i mean [email protected] have never seen so much people stand inline for a trance dj

Posted by theeyesofdarkness on Nov-11-2002 17:43:

lol... the people who were at tiesto were just a bunch of followers who read that tiesto is #1 dj in the world and so hes become the "in" dj to like for the hollywood clubgoers.. and that is what caused the madness at spundae. which is why i didnt go.

i think giant learned a lot last nye as to what they need to plan for this year. giant has barely had any events this year so i think theyve had plenty of time to think out their plans for this nye. im not sure if im gonna go cause im not to thrilled w/ the line-up. but so far the location has been announced so theres much less to guess about this year.

and pvd is scheduled to play in frisco around 7 or 8pm for only about an hour so i think he has plenty of time to make it down to LA and get here in time.. i think a flight from frisco to LA is only about an hour and a half so it shouldnt be too bad. hopefully he plays a decent set this year unlike last year. even though it was just nice to hear any kind of trance after hours upon hours of progressive house!!

Posted by wushuboy on Nov-11-2002 19:08:

yep exactly... ppl who go to spundae are usually just a bunch of followers. Do you think they actually know the music tiesto is spinning? prolly not. All these posers is the reason why the LA trance scene sucks. BTW.. PvD is gonna be playing a 2 hour set in frisco. I think ill email giant to see how long his set is. IF his set is gonna be 3 hrs maybe ill go.

COULDNT AGREE MORE THAN THIS

I Heard so many dumb chicks and e-pudding dudes chant
T-I-E-S-TO, and that's all they know about his name.

L.A. scene really suz! it's still hollywood hip-hop culture....

JUST THE FACT that there is club go from 10-4 and then the
AFTERHOUR club is just plainly F***UP.
spundae and giant never have encore!

I prefer the EAst Coast Crowd.

I beg to differ. When Sander Kleinenberg was @ Spundae in April 02, he spun til 5am. When Carl Cox spun in July(?), he spun til 5:30am. At Spundae, the promoters let the headlining DJ spin as long as he/she wants, it's up to the DJ's to decide when to end the night. I've never been to east coast clubs, but the LA electronic music scene is alive and healthy! You get all the E-tards and "followers" coming out to clubs when the big name TRANCE DJ's come to LA, partially due to the fact that LA still has a strong trance addiction. But E-tards and "trance sheep" are and have been a big part of this scene for years, since the rave and massive days. For the most part, the Hollywood types (ie muscle builders and strippers) have not been noticable at Spundae and Giant events, as these clubs are more about the music than the who's-who atmosphere. There are clubs in LA that are geared more towards these types of ppl, such as Club Naked and Rubber. The great thing about LA is that you can choose to see some world class DJ's on Saturday night (Spundae), and enjoy some eye candy (tits & ass) on Friday night (Club Rubber).

Trance came on the scene in LA clubs about 2-3 years ago. At first, only local DJs were being booked at clubs, and most clubs were hip hop oriented with a specific timeslot allocated for a trance DJ to spin. Eventually Trance became so popular that trance DJs were headlining, and clubs specifically geared towards electronic music began opening. Other genres of electronic music have exploded in LA over the past year. A year ago, Tall Paul was a HUGE and RARE booking for Giant. Now, we've got world class DJ's like Sasha, Digweed, Lawler, Tiesto, Ferry, etc etc coming here literally EVERY weekend. There is more talent coming thru LA in any given month than anywhere else in the US, aside from possibly New York City. LA has gained much credibility over the past year because it has become a more educated and demanding scene. No longer are all LA clubbers satisfied with a no-name trance DJ spinning some cheesy 5 year old records. LA has moved leaps and bounds over the past 1 - 1.5 years, and the rest of the world has taken note. For example, look at who is spinning at JUST Spundae in November:

Tiesto
Steve Lawler
DJ Dan/Guy Ornadel
Sven Vath/Richie Hawtin!!!!
Layo & Bushwacka

To further illustrate my point, here is a list of just a FEW of the Dj's I've seen over the past two months, I know there are many more that I can't think of right now:

Armin Van Buuren
Sasha (twice!)
John Digweed
Lucien Foort
Tiesto
Steve Lawler
Sander Kleinenberg
Mark Farina
Ferry Corsten

The LA music scene is dead? Hell NO!!!!!! We've got the world's best talent coming here on a continuous basis, and we've got two of the best clubs in the US (Giant & Spundae). I know this is the TRANCE Addict board, and many of you enjoy only trance, but seriously, there are many other great genres of electronic out there. I love trance, but I also love house, tribal, breaks, and progressive. I suggest you sit back and think what it would be like to live in Pheonix, Arizona. You think Tiesto would have even considered spinning there??? Ummmm.....No.

Whine all you want, but LA's scene rivals that of New York City, as well as many other cities in Europe.

Posted by wushuboy on Nov-13-2002 19:35:

If you havent seen the clubs on the east coast then i dont think y ou have any way to judge between the two. You think spundae and giant are good clubs? Pleease. You havent seen Avalon or Roxy. These clubs blow spundae and giant away!! Trance in LA is a fad. That;s why you get these E-tard and such attending. It's the IN thing now.

And your comment bout there being more talent coming thru LA in any given month than anywhere in the US is short-sighted. DC and Miami get way more talent than us. Armin has a residency at Glow. How many mp3 sets are there of Armin at Glow?? PvD might as well have a residency in New York. Tiesto goes to miami more than any other US city. And where are these places? the East Coast ;P

There may be good djs coming to LA but the crowd here doesnt appreciate them as the crowd on the East Coast does.

Hey Melissa.. how u doing? Still cant get over Roxy!! hehe.

i am doing ok - i want to come visit. i'll b e in LA next week but only for like an hour while i wait to catch my connection to hawaii. you guys should come back here sometime. or definitely go to WMC. that shoudl be a cool meetup and a fun week.

i think i need to come see Giant to see how this compares. My friend went there and really liked it. Personally I think Roxy is awful - you just happend to catch an amazing crowd because it was PVD. He draws the best ppl when he comes to NYC. And though Glow gets a good trance line up i don't like that space all that much.

Posted by theeyesofdarkness on Nov-13-2002 20:15:

blah blah blah... east coast/west coast... blah blah blah.. lol im sorry u guys are wrong thinking any other city east coast - west coast - or central pulls even half the talent that LA does.. there is a world of amazing djs outside of tiesto, pvd, and armin. look at the line-ups we have here on a WEEKLY basis compared weekly to any other city in the US right now and u will see we have the most consistent stream of top notch djs coming in. trust me trance is not the "IN" thing here. the reason so many people show up for these big trance djs is because is because you have to wait 3-4 months for a trance dj to even be booked in this city. the "IN" thing right now is house & progressive. thats what its cool among the music heads to listen to and trance is so looked down upon. actually even progressive is starting to be looked down upon and everything is about house. lol the crowd in LA is fine. i read plenty of reviews that the djs write about coming here and they are ALWAYS commenting on how much the crowd is so into the music and energetic here. of course the crowds are different in different areas. la is not any worse than new york and new york is not worse than la.. they are just different. its all opinions on which do u prefer its not facts.

Posted by Punkaweedus on Nov-13-2002 23:21:

eyesofdarkness, I agree with you. The purpose of my post was to dispute the statement that LA does not have a scene, that the LA crowd are "followers", and that we don't know our music/DJs.

(Note: I had a fairly lengthy response to wushuboy's last post but as I clicked the post button it disappeared into the world of unknown - I think they just upgraded servers so who knows. Here goes a brief synopsis)

Wushuboy, if you think the LA scene is completely out of the loop, I suggest coming out to Honey or Sugar or another small club. The vibe is definitely there, we know our music, and it's not a room filled with 2000 Etards (as compared to any given Friday @ Red). So is the case on most saturday nights @ Spundae when there is not a trance DJ spinning. Trance is not the "IN" thing in LA right now, as EOD stated. Prog and House are the most popular acts being drawn in by LA clubs. However, trance music still has a huge following in LA, as was seen at Tiesto (added that he was just nominated #1 DJ blah blah). Trance DJ's are just not being booked as often as in the past due to the popularity of other genres. It sucks for trance fans living in LA, but maybe it will give you an opportunity to experience some new and different music that will broaden your musical tastes.

I'm serious about checking out Honey or Sugar, btw. Great vibe, very cool ppl. I'll be @ Honey this Thursday for Doc Martin, if anyone would like to form a TA meetup, I'd love to meet some ppl from this board
