The "Lets all help Coup build a PC thread"

This is exactly what it says on the tin

We're upgrading our PC, which kinda means buying a new case and everything inside it, except CD-ROM, Burner, Floppy Drive (getting a new hd aswel)

Im not gona build this, my brothers gona build this from the components, but wont help me find out what i need (hes a jackass).

This is what i have:

Mobo = Epox EP-8K3A+ (Socket A - motherboard) (MB-009-EP)

Ram = Corsair 256MB DDR XMS2700 CAS2 (MY-002-CS)

Case = GlobalWin 802 (No PSU) (CA-000-GL) (does this come with a power supply)?

And then ill need the P4 cheep to go on top. Little grey areas are cooling. Does this case come with a fan in the arse of it? and then i buy a heatsink which sits on/near the chip to keep it cool? whats the best heatsink to buy? (this site is the best site for me overclockers). Is that ok then? fan in the case and then heatsink on the cpu?

New case, mobo, ram stick, cpu and heatsink? that all goes together fine and will work? whats the best video card btw? ive got an audigy so ill move that accross.

cheers coupy

PSU = Power Supply Unit...

So my quess would be no it doesnt come with a power supply

Cant help you with the other things... i don't know shit about computer hardware.

Posted by Coup on Nov-07-2002 21:43:

ah thanks for that, need to investigate then!

Posted by reveal on Nov-07-2002 22:34:

i recommend 512 megs of ram, 256 is way to little

Posted by dig2k on Nov-07-2002 23:10:

yep the case doesn't come with a power supply. I recommend you get a 400w PSU from www.quietpc.com so that your computer isn't so noisy. For modern PC's don't consider a PSU less than about 350w. It should have some fans included already, but i'm not sure

also get 512mb ram+.

The motherboard you've selected is for AMD Athlon chips... you mentioned a P4 chip. Try looking at the processor+motherboard bundles in the bundles section, these guarantee your getting a combination that will work together and often include ram/heatsinks/thermal compound which you will need. They are also a bit cheaper than buying the stuff seperately.

I would recommend you get a IBM120GXP series hard drive as they are cheap and still provide good performance. If you really want to get an amazing hard drive you'll need to wait for 'Serial ATA' or spend shit loads on SCSI though...

Make sure you get the right memory... ask them if ur not sure.

If ur really in2 gaming get a Radeon 9700 based graphics card... otherwise just select a geforce series 4200 or 4400 or a radeon 9000 series which are relatively cheap.... Don't bother with the geforce 4600 series - they are almost as expensive as the radeons but have a lot lower performance.

Microsoft do the best mice+keyboards if u need them and if u need a monitor then just check out reviews as no one manufacturer is 100% consistant.

Finally you should check reviews for heatsinks from technical sites - just look at the conclusion instead of trying to understand all the jargon. Also look at the noise level..

Posted by TrAZ on Nov-07-2002 23:17:

dig2k...your joking about the IBM hard drives? those have to be the biggest pieces of shit EVER. they are cheap for a fuckin reason, cuz they ARE SHIT

how much u plan on spending coup?

Posted by dig2k on Nov-07-2002 23:51:

No? It's a good hard drive? I've heard lots of good reviews about it and it's predecessors although admittedly the 60/75gxp series weren't built to be used for more than 8 hour sessions...

Here's a few links to reviews from random places I found, and all of them admit it has certain downfalls but is overall a v good product.

I also own 2 of them and have had no problems whatsoever.

I disagree. I have 256 DDR with a 1500mhz athlon xp 1800 running XP, and mine runs beautifully. I run loads of programs such as Reason2 fireworks, flash and a ftp server 24/7 and many more.

Maybe not such a big one.. SX840 is what I;ve got ands it fucking OWNZZ!!! haha.

Anyways: My take..

EPOX mobos aren't that good.. They're fairly unstable. I suggest Abit, I have an AT-7 and its AMAZING, completely legacy free and fast as fuck! Anyways..

Case: Go Antec.. Cheap and quite franky, a good fuckin case!

Ram: More than 256 and get a brand name.. mushkin is good ram and inexpensive for some... Crucual, samsung is good... ram is one thing you dont want to go weak on.

lateeez.

I agree with you there, I have 2 PC's, and the one with 512 MB is much faster, especially when you use WinXP.

U can never have too much RAM or Harddrive space

you should still get 512 megs...

Posted by netw3rkd on Nov-09-2002 16:52:

I'd get more then 256MB ram. Reason being, it won't cost that much and it will help you in the longrun. Just a word of advice, don't run Windows 98SE or Windows XP if you plan on putting in alot of ram. They have poor memory managers. Get 2k!

Posted by Coup on Nov-09-2002 18:37:

i got win 2k pro. ill give u all an update in a few days

Personally coup, I'd have another 256mb of ram, simply cos u want something thats not gonna need upgrading in the near future, and it's always better to have more imo

Posted by Coup on Nov-10-2002 21:04:

if i need more, ill buy another one and put it in the mobo, no problem
