What's in a song...

OK, i know i'm gonna be stretchin' a bit here but I hope you guys know what I'm trying to get at.

You know with certain artists, they have a unique or distinctive quality within all or most of their tunes.

For example, M.I.K.E productions have that helicopter kinda feel (there's probably a technical term but I'm not gonna even try) or Dumonde has that thumping hollow bass or just simply PPK's annoying Roland keyboard effects.

What I wanna know is which special characteristic of an artist do you enjoy the most? I mean when you hear the song you go "that's gotta be a something something tune and I love it."

Personally, I love the Gouryella basslines and are probably the easiest to identify when being mixed in. Get the pic?

You can get as technical as you want, I just wanna know if we only listen to a song or do we actually absorb it. I'm actually quite serious, so don't be putting ATB unless you mean it - Not that there's anything wrong with that.

P.S. Hey Ves, what special quality do you like in a man... uhh, I mean song.

All push productions have a similar sounding bassline, and the synths, are dirty and techy soundings. Usually, sometimes he uses softer less dirty synths, that are still techy. At least thats how id describe Push productions.

for big bouncy percussive hats and cymbals -> oliver klein and filterheadz
for basslines -> marco v
and for synths -> three drives

I really enjoy the 'breathy' synths that Armin uses in most of his productions. They give his tracks a sense of space that's unique.

synths/melodies = Nu NRG/AVB/PVD/Second Sun
Basslines = James Holden/PVD/H&J

I find these similar aspects in Tiesto's productions, has a feel of spacey trance soundscapes which make me feel alot of emotion and space.

The synths in Ayla or Yahel tracks do it for me every time!!

Posted by Pointy on Nov-08-2002 07:45:

Well i'd say James Holden's productions are the easiest to spot, with its really really sub-bass b-lines n beats. I also find Makoto (from drum n bass) productions really distinctive, have a really jumpy jazzy feel good sound, along with distinctive snares/claps/rhythms.

SOLAR STONE! it's so easy to identify one of there remixes/tunes! i don't know what it is about them but ya just know its them!

Posted by Bedrock on Nov-08-2002 08:52:

you always seem to know when ur hearing a Hybrid tune, its always cleanly produced and has a complicated, detailed sound

Posted by Ves on Nov-08-2002 09:07:

This is a good topic MichaelDudikoff. Certainly made me think

I agree with discitelli. Solar Stone have a unique chilled sound that make their productions & remixes easy to identify. They have a very relaxing and dreamy feel to them. And I can almost always identify a Solar Stone track with its ability to make me think of love, affection and all that saccharine stuff (especially Solarcoaster!).

PvD's productions usually have this overall feel to them that I really like, especially in his older tunes such as Forbidden Fruit, The Greatness of Britain, Words and Another Way. I don't really know how to explain it, but his tracks have this, hmm, clarity and crispness to them. It might be the basslines that give this effect, as they're quite defined... oh I don't know ! I like them and that's all that matters I suppose!

Yea Hybrids another one... the quality of production + hybrid breaks stand out alot. Layo & Bushwacka breaks are pretty distinctive..lotsa fucked up sounds, yet it all fits together so well. Hard to describe, but sometimes i feel that if i copied one of their beat patterns into hammerhead (beatbox program ) it would sound shite. Somehow they always make the most awkward of combinations sound sick. DJ Shadow is another one.. sampled, cruisey n just an all-round shadow touch

Posted by Philby on Nov-08-2002 12:47:

well it doesnt take much to spot a pvd tune these days
its good though, especially if youve never heard it before
you can instantly know who its by and get excited

Svenson & Gielen (Airscape) tracks/remixes are quite easy to identify too... their pumping bassline and sythns phrasing are what probably stands out most... Really ENERGETIC!!!!!

Push/MIKE like to use similar harmonic structure for the tracks. Always in minor keys, and always opting for the darker resolution for each melodic phrase. Really emotional!!!

Gouryella's tones are absolutely brilliant!!!! Perfect balance of polyphony and GREAT MELODIES make them UPLIFTING GODS!!!! Hectic Indeed!!!!!!

yeah push/mike/whatever tunes are awesome, and easy to ID hehe
they are uplifting but not in an obvious or over the top way.
sound great!

and unless his website is telling fibs, he is definetly coming here for two tribes

I think I'd have to agree

Starecase I find are reasonably easy to spot, love most of their remixes, don't have many original tracks by them.

NuBreed are quite good to ID, they're a melbourne (or Aus) group if anyone's curious. They're playing Live at Kryal Kastle pretty soon.
Great remixes of DJ Tiesto - Obsession and Way Out West - Stealth. Similar to Hybrid.

At the moment Hybrid's new releases haven't elicited too much passion from me, they're okay but they don't really stand out like some of their older stuff which included more classical sounds (violin etc.). Although their remix of Conjure One - Tears From The Moon.. I Really liked.

Some other artists I find similar, but still good (IE. not repetitive) are Ferry Corsten (Most of his remixes are gold), also Barraka, Matt Darey, Thrillseekers, Seraque......ah wtf am I talking about....all artists are great...and if they seem repetitive it's only cos they caught onto a sound that was great..and it still sounds awesome in other remixes..

Disclaimer: I am drunk drunk drunk durnk drunk.....so all comments in above posts are liable to quotes and laughter. I apoligise for any incorrect statements and feel free to persecute me to the hisghest extent of the law.

Have a nice day.

Wow, some damn good observations here.

Sure makes me look like a lameass with my 'helicopter' and 'thumping hollow bass' descriptions.

Keep it up folks, it's good to be able to see where you're coming from when I'm listening to these songs. Especially enjoying the Hybrid references. (Who are they by the way? Any other pseudonyms?)

I truly apologise for insulting your guys intelligence by even mentioning ATB, I feel so dirty and cheap... and naked.

Posted by escee on Nov-09-2002 01:53:

i think however good these descriptions are, they are still pretty dodgy. Its like when your out and you hear a track that blows your mind and your trying to explain it to someone.

"Yeah it goes like this, do do do do DO DOOOOOO" and your friend has no idea what the song is like and you hear it again sometime later and think wtf i was way off with my do do do shit.

I do that all the time.....
n the ppl around me look at me like im such a dickhead...
but when u hear that one song.... sometimes the "do do doo"
is the only way to describe it

Posted by webmeister on Nov-09-2002 04:36:

hahaha...yeah that often happens to me. Any tune I try to replicate usually sounds like random utter crap.
I think the only track I can do is Trisco- Ultra and maybe Punk...and that's still pretty dodgy.

Posted by Hybrid Junkie on Nov-11-2002 05:07:

I can do Greece 2000 pretty well or atleast *I* know what it is when I "du-nah du-nah du-nah du-nah dah-nah"

Oh yeah another artist is Classified Project, so far all their mixes have been good.

Posted by Pointy on Nov-11-2002 08:57:

Yep, Classified Project is another one Does anyone know anything about him/them??.. i heard CP is hailing outta the US.. Still, all the songs and remixes by Classified Project are sick. Best melodies n progression n whatnot.

Classified Project - Resurrection

Hybrid Junkie: what you said about Starecase remixes you are right, they have a very definative sound.. with any starecase production your after a winner really

another artist that has a very definative sound is Signum, you can easily tell if they have produced or remixed a track, they have a certain sound, which can easily be picked up.

Posted by gilmista on Nov-11-2002 13:58:

Three Drives have THHHHHHHHEEEEE BESTTTTTTTTTTT and most recognisable tunes ever.

So do PUSH, PVD and NU NRG, but I think we get what you mean.
