DJ Jon Cockle - My Wedding (House Classics)

I managed to tie the knot last night, and decided to forego expensive crappy DJs, and just put a pre-mixed set on instead

If anyone wants to hear it - take a gander! It went down really well on the night

As an eye witness, I can confirm that this set did indeed rock it.

This was fun as hell. I'm sure your guests had an absolute blast. This is primo wedding music (unfortunately we instructed our DJ to play the basics). Loved the remix of Strings of Life and grinned stupidly when Daft Punk came on. What better song to play at the end of a wedding party? Nicely done Jon, enjoy marriage, it's wonderful

Thanks very much for the review Nick! It was great on the night - I also had a couple of hours of standard wedding music before this, which was ok but you really need someone to perform that stuff live because of how diverse the genres are.

I made a couple of edits for the set - Strings of life being one of then. I find Mark Knight does a good job of making fairly standard remixes of huge classics to make them fit in amongst that 'naughties' sound, but they tend to be really long and the second half is basically a cooy and paste of the first, so I edited down both of his outings

As promised, I had another listen to this. As an accessible '90s classics set, it's really hard to argue with it. You did a really good job of balancing out the commercial hits (Another Chance, Pjanoo), the Ibiza classics (Man With The Red Face, Yeke Yeke), the good side of early '90s handbag (K-Klass, D:Ream) and clubby interpretations of classic wedding anthems (Blue Monday, Mr Brightside). It was the perfect cross-section of tunes to appeal to everyone at the wedding, and it went down a storm. I really like the way you used that remix of Mr Brightside, as it was the most sing-along moment of the whole set. I've never heard you bring a set to a stop for a big song before, but it was very good programming, especially followed by the more driving Mindcircus remix.

The mixing is mostly very good. I can't decide if you deliberately got into matching keys for this, or if it was just extensive trial-and-error. Either way, almost every track fits together very smoothly and musically, whereas usually you focus more on energy levels with your mixing. My only mild technical nitpick is that some of the levels are a bit uneven - particularly around Yeke Yeke, Ajare and then the Blue Monday cover. It wasn't noticeable on the night, but at home I found myself turning up the volume to compensate for the volume drop.

One question - did you deliberately start with Another Chance because the lyric is a reference to your story of what happened with Deb, or am I over-analysing?

Talking

Jon, I was going to write a long review but then Jack came along and basically said everything that I was going to say...

But yeah, excellent stuff, perfect wedding reception vibes. I'm just sorry I wasn't there to see it in person.

This will definitely be getting heaving rotation in the car on family road trips

Thanks for the review Jack - you've definately called out all the things I was trying to do with this mix. The harmonic mixing is definately more trial and error than paper based music theory

With the volume issues, I think I pieced this set together from about 15 different sessions on the decks over many months. I had a problem with some of the best bits being recorded dangerously loud and I was risking it clipping if I continued. When I listen back now I think I just about got away with it, but it's definately not as level as it ought to be

Haha - I thought that after the fact too, and I wish I could say it was the case but it's actually just a great track which flows brillaintly into Pjanoo 😁
