Favorite dub techno producers?

Hey,

I have really started digging dub techno. Could you recommend your favorite dub techno producers? Maybe some good dub techno artist albums as well.

There are huge numbers of same-sounding producers of this style. I would recommend the usuals - Fluxion, Deepchord, Basic Channel/Maurizio/Moritz Van Oswald/Rhythm & Sound/Round One, Rod Modell, Yagya, anything on Chain Reaction, Scion, (some) Bandulu, Monolake, Porter Ricks, Octex, Andy Stott, Deadbeat, Quantec, Peter Benisch, Knowone etc.

I'm sure I would find a lot more decent dub techno from more recent outputs, but I find the variation lacking. I'm talking about releases by nae:tek, oven ni, mr cloudy etc.

There's a lot of these net label dub techno producers and they all have the same clean and boring as fuck 'ableton stock device sound". I really, really love dub techno and I can't listen to most of that stuff either. Dub techno needs nice, warm, thick, liquid, gritty, interesting textures to work, it really is textural music at it's core.

There used to be a lot more reputable, vinyl labels doing dub techno in the late 2000s most of them are inactive now or they stopped doing dub, it's kind of dried up a bit and gone out of fashion.

You've mentioned many of the usual suspects already. Two guys I discovered more recently are Federsen and Uon, they both make really, really nice stuff. I still like almost everything Rod Modell puts out, he continously keeps upping his sound design game. Sferic is a really nice label. There's a few house guys doing stuff right now that's a bit dubby, Janaret and Roger Gerressen come to mind. Joule is a a very nice label in that sort of style. Silent Season is still going, the last Mohlao album was really, really good.

It's not really spoken about much compared to his first two albums, but if I had to recommend one solitary dub techno album, it would certainly be Yagya - Sleepygirls. Not only is it sonically gorgeous and flows together like a daydream, but it has beautiful warmth, an ambiguity of mood that makes it work just as well in night or day, summer or winter.

Probably too "clean" for some, but I was also a big fan of Dublicator until he sadly retired the alias. I'd definitely recommend checking out his Deep Sea Exploration EP, which I've had on repeat for about five straight years now. The emphasis is less on mere texture and more on composition and melody.

To be honest, most of the dubby stuff I've been listening to in recent years has been more like "dub ambient" that integrates some of the ideas of dub techno. Stuff like Moss Garden - In The Silence Of The Subconscious, Mind Groove - The Sailor And The Mountain or Purl - Stillpoint. I find the more purist realisation of dub techno gets boring extremely quickly, and these ideas only really have any longevity when they are cross-pollinated into broader musical palettes. But then, as a listener I've always been more interested in composition and musical ideas than engineering and studio twiddling.

I went through something of a short dub techno phase toward the end of the 2000's (which I'm hesitant to call a 'phase' since I still like the stuff, it's just not something that's a musical priority for me these days), but there was one producer- G.R.I.T.- who I remember fondly:





And while I can't really call this act a 'favorite' of mine since I don't recall anything else they've ever made, it's nonetheless a gorgeous piece of dub:

The guys at Thule Records are now making new tunes again as well. Dub techno has run into a wall of Basic Channel cliches at this point, but I always felt that the icelandic guys managed to switch up the textures and maintain a subtlety that keeps their output interesting.

Oh yes. Thule. Sadly, I only own very few releases from this great label.

While looking for the type of dubby that I love, I get noticed that I have way more success when looking for towards labels instead of artists. In this case, I will say mille plateaux, basic channel, tresor (some releases), deluxe, thule (as someone already said), 100% pure (some releases), harvest (some releases), and svek

Going to be stating several of the obvious ones here, but these are off of the top of my head my favorites: Intrusion, Phase90, Variant, Echospace, DeepChord, S.T.L., Basic Channel, Moritz von Oswald, Maurizio, Rod Modell, Stephen Hitchell, cv313. My knowledge with Dub Techno is rather casual/limited although I have listened to it for years never got too hardcore into it other than the surface stuff because it can be lack variety, but it's perfect to just chill and space out to. I recommend DI's Dub Techno channel for some good radio shows, Hello Strange Podcast, and to learn about new tracks (wwwi.di.fm/dubtechno). This is one of my favorite Dub Techno tracks released in 2008 on Echospace.

Aethus has a great good album on Silent Season, Remote_ has some good stuff too. Bvdub no longer produces dub techno but some earlier stuff was good dub techno, and Quantec was mentioned by others.
