Exclamation Donnie Darko

okay, last night i saw donnie darko, and OMG what a movie!! totally wicked, a genre on it's own!! but the movie is also quite complicated! the ending is quite hard to figure out so i have a couple of questions:

spoilers:!

- does the world end???
- how does donnie know that the plain is about the crash
- how does frank communicate with donnie (he's a time traveller but also a school kid?)

please fire your question away, we can figure them out.. i hope!!

damn ik just love those mindgame movies!!

There's a lot more to the story that the actual movie doesn't emphasize that much on. Check out this website: http://www.ruinedeye.com/cd/time1.htm. That site contains actual pages from the "Philosophy of Timetravel", the book that Ms. Sparrow wrote. It's very helpful in understanding the movie.

Exclamation

the book claims Donnie is a timetraveler... my question: the motor that lands on the house is from the plane his mother & sister fly in, while they r at home, both times... explain that

& the movie rox, really, i just sat & stared like 5 mins after the movie ended

Posted by Fir3start3r on Nov-11-2002 23:23:

Yea, that's one I'm going to have to rent again...
I just saw it for the first time a couple of months ago.
I think I was just stunned after I saw lol...
(plus I need a refresher; can't remember the whole movie...)

Posted by Trancealot on Nov-12-2002 00:40:

so you finally watched it. I think its a love story. If he was in the house and the plane landed while he was in bed he be dead. Obviously the movie took another turn as if he was not in his bed at the time. Thats how his relationship started but at the end the girl dies anyway. I understood the air bubble was a way to see what people were going to do. It was not really time travel because the bubble only led people into the future. The bubble travled with time also.

best quote of movie"how does one go about sucking a fuck"

dumbiest part of movie"girl getting ran over becuase the guy in the car did not see her"

Best part..Making fun of the fear guy in front of school in the auditorium. also..fear guy getting caught after his house burnt down because of Donnie with the child porn ring.

i thought this was a great movie, besides it being confusing as hell to me.

i got all of what you guys said. it all makes sense. but there is more to it. my major question is this: if donnie knew that his g/f was going to die, why the hell did he go back to that old ladies house. thats the one part i don't get. why LET your g/f die, so you have to go back to the past and kill yourself?

i dunno, i think there is a lot more to it than we all see. two of my friends who are kinda fucked up people, both explained it like this: "you have to be fucked up to appricate it to its fullest ability." which i think is true. one of them is a manic-depresant and the other one is just weird. lol.

my fav part of the movie:
"my dad has psychological problems"
"oh me too, what kind?"

HAHAHAHHA. donnie you rule!

and i thought it was really beautiful how donnie killed himself to save the life of other people, that was cool.

i saw the movie again last night again, what a movie but i understand a lot more now..

spoiler

the bunny frank lets donnie do things that will lead to other events (like burn the house > mother will go away. or flood the school > fall in love)..

but what i don't understand, why does donnie post the letter to grandma death, how comes that frank is a time travelar when he's killed by donnie?... at the ending time is turned back but how (the plain isn't going at the speed of light right, and donnie ain't on the plain right?)

anyone..

no donnie isn't on the plane. he's back home. but the engine falls off and then falls into one of these "wormholes" which travels through time and then hits the house when donnie is sleeping. frank isn't a time traveler (i think). i think he's just part of donnie's imagination. how the guy has that costume though, i don't understand.

but how does donnie get back in time when he isn't going though the wormhole??

i also don't get the frank part.. but didn't the travelar say that frank was the name of his father and his father before him, or doesn;t that have to do with it! ?

donnie knew he'd be sleeping, so he sorta sent the engine to kill himself to prevent others from being hurt. he took his life to save the life of others.

i dunno about frank. lol

i get that .. but at the end he started laughing, because he's amazed that he did it! so how did he travel back in time, without beeing on the vecile himself..

he's not a timetravler himself. he sent the engine back in time to kill himself.

huh?? how did Donnie suddenly send the engine back?? he went back in time himself...

but the weird part = his mother & sister were on that plane, but both times the engine falls, they r at home...

Posted by PatMcGroin on Nov-14-2002 04:41:

i really don't see where you guys are coming from. but maybe i should just watch it again

Posted by sothis on Nov-14-2002 08:30:

saying "spoiler" one line before you spoil it, isnt really that great yo. at least put a few lines in between that and what you say so people realize whats going on and wont scroll down, rather than seeing it on the very next line

or for that matter, why dont you just edit the title of this and put *spoilers* in the title, so if people dont want the movie ruined, they dont know to look at it? (since now, most people arent even warning)

eh, even if you know the story line, it still won't ruin the film, the film has so much beauty beyond just the storyline.

when i want to discuss a movie i talk about parts of the movie, just saying it was amazing 20 times ain't a real good discussio imo..

did you see it?

yup because not the whole plain is beeing pulled back in time, you see a part of some sort of wormhole and only the engine is going though..

pat, you see at the end of the movie that donnie is laughing that is imo because he did it, he travelled though time!

im certainly not saying dont discuss it, but if you are going to give spoilers, have the decency to either put "Spoilers" in the title of the thread, or leave a lot of space like this:

Spoiler!

, so people can choose not to look. you saying "spoiler" and then putting it on the next line accomplishes nothing and its just as well that you dont put it at all.

yes, ive seen it.

pat: eh, i strongly dislike it when i have something spoiled for me.. whether it be a movie or a game, etc. its hard for me to really get into something when i already know whats going to happen. movie review threads can either be spoiling, or general info... this one is spoiling, thats why i think the title needs to be edited.

this movie owns!! really! it so cool! its one of the best i've seen! good...

*spoiler coming up!!!!!!!!!!!*

i saw an interview with Richard Kelly on tv a week ago, thought you would be intressted: you know when Donnie and the girl (cant remember her name atm) are walking in a park (forest perhaps?) and their talking about their school project, and he tries to kiss her? well, she mentions the man in the jogging suit starring at them. u with me? richard said that he is in the movie 4 times, and he has the red suit on 2 of the times. can you find him? i have seen him both times in the red suit, but the two remaining is hard! help!

and he also said to notice that when Donnies mom is in donnies room, watching the rabbit he painted, watch the lightning of the room. it looks (to me) as if the roof wasnt there...

and please (PLEASE!!) if you've seen the movie or not, go to visit www.donniedarko.com. its the official site, with a little "game" to play. or its more of an mystery to complete. its really good as well.

the movie owns!

i've watched this movie several times in the last year...excellent stuff, it really makes your question your existence and values.. it's a great movie to watch blazed... i downloaded the divx...

Posted by TimeportE on Nov-15-2002 08:45:

damo, is that the girl from donnie darko in your sig, it is, isn't it?
nice looking girl!

and nils, indeed i asked myself why the f*ck is that man in the picture!
do you got any of the answers to the questions i asked in the beginning? i neeeeed those!

ps. sothis, what i ment to say was, when i make a thread about a movie i tend to discuss the movie, and i think that people who haven't seen the movie won't click the movie, at least i won't.. but then again you're right so..

Posted by Damo on Nov-16-2002 05:01:

hee, yeah, she's a hotty...Jena Malone... she's also good in Life as a House...

Posted by P`zazz on Jul-10-2003 15:50:

I saw the movie last night and this is the only way I can explain it

Frank saved Donnie so he can live and see what would have happened, he then sees that the future is full of pain and death and he decides that it's better if he had died in the first place so these bad things wouldn't have happened, this would help him to die peacefully and happily

some questions remain unanswered though like whats the deal with frank and also is Donnie seeing the future in his dream (which explains a lot) or is everything real and frank has gone back in time to guide donnie (if this is the case then other questions arise like how the fuck did he manage to go back in time and let himself die)
