thank JP for this. He made this himself:

00:00 - 05:20 Intro, Paul at Casino Berlin

People have different opinions about my music. Some find if it happy. Some others think it's sad, but say it does bring hope. Electronic music is a soundtrack of emotions.

I'm able to write music but also remix music.

I'm a real Berliner, I love this city. I find it always special to perform in Berlin, to be in Berlin.

I never have stage fright, because it's exciting to perform each and every time.

A good DJ is someone who has an idea of what he wants to bring across to the audience.

You watch how people react, you're close to what's happening on the dancefloor. You look at the faces in the crowd and adapt the music style accordingly.

Besides the message of your music, it's also about entertainment. People go out to have fun.

When you notice the crowd loves what you give to them, I get very euphoric. Then it's hard to go to the hotel to go to sleep.

I try to be a discrete as possible in my appearance. I wanna be a part of a picture. Olaf Heinen is one of the few photographers who does that job well. He understands me.

05:20 - 11:35 Paul's photographer
11:35 - 12:50 Forbidden Fruit

12:50 - 14:40 Paul telling about his youth in Eisenhttenstadt

I was born in Eisenhttenstadt and I lived there the first years of my life. The communist build these awful buildings and people had to live here. It's so sad.

I didn't know my father, he left my mother at young age.

I don't miss him, cause I didn't know him. My mother did all she could to be two parents at once. She did a great job.

I can imagine my mother was sick and tired of this town and wanted another future for us. Berlin was more attractive being the capital of East Germany.

14:40 - 15:30 Paul telling about Berlin

Berlin is my home town, I spend many years of my life here. Events in Germany like the 1th of May parade were schooltrips for me.

Instead of learning this was a good opportunity to make fun, nobody was there because of their pride for the DDR.

I'm in my old school since 14 years, was never here inbetween. It all looked a lot bigger when I was young

15:30 - 19:50 His school, his love for English independant music

At one moment I discovered The Smiths, something different from the other music. I had to make a school report. I looked for all info I could found about the band and tried to explain how important The Smiths were for independant music. I got a bad note, and got angry because the teacher never heard of them. I ended up at the principal's office

Thanks to two teachers I could develop my cosmopolitan mind even in the communist regime. I'm very thankfull for that.

Kalinka was the first club I went to. The school was turned into a small disco. That was our entertainment. The played folk music but also independant music like New Order.

I never wanted to become a DJ, that was a coincidence. My deeper interest for music was born there. At age 12-13 I also learned the technical aspects of being a DJ.

19:50 - 21:10 The fall of Berlin wall

A week before the Wall came down, we were allowed to go in the West. It was a big shock for my mother. Now we all have the same freedom. I had the feeling "wow, what a possiblities are open now!"

21:10 - 27:55 Paul's home, his meeting with Phillip Stark (English language)
27:55 - 29:40 Tell me why

29:40 - 31:30 Paul about Tresor club where he had his first gig in 1991

The exploding cultural revolution can't be discribed. We were all curious about the future. Every day something new happened in music. We had no idea what would become of it all. Nowadays it's a global youth culture that unites people from all over the world. It was fascinating.

It was hard to decide to be just a DJ. After 2.5 years I couldn't combine it with my job as a table maker. In the beginning a DJ was a freak in the corner that makes music while other people had fun. It all changed later.

31:30 - 34:05 Paul about the legendary E-werk club that closed in 1997

E-Werk was the tempel for electronic music in Europe. There wasn't a club with the same importance. I was proud I could play there.

You came in and there was a certain admosphere, even without people inside. It was gigantic with people and music. 1997 it closed. A big blow for Berlin, and nothing could replace it.

We got payed so much less back than. The scene was 100 times smaller. At one moment I had to decide: will I buy some food or get that one record I want?

34:05 - 36:50 Loveparade 2002

So many people heard of the Loveparade. It has a great impact on Berlin as people around the world speak positive about the city and Germany. You can't reach the same effect with money or marketing.

Techno is everywhere. There isn't a tv show without electronic music in the background. There isn't a place where electonic music hasn't arrived.

36:50 - 41:30 Theme about a guy that does special lightning
41:30 - 42:20 Another way

42:20 - 43:50 Gatecrasher Birmingham

I won't call them fans. They are people who enjoy my music. That is the best feeling in the world. You create something which people moves.

15000 people listened to me in the Gatecrasher hall. I'm just there to give people something. So the crowd has actually more power than me.

43:50 - 46:20 Paul saying "I am not a pop-star"

I find these headlines on magazines awful. The people of these magazines don't understand what really drives me. I'm not there to lead people somewhere, but to create a good time with the people together. I wanna give them a soundtrack to their lives. I'm not a Messiah or a leader. I'm just a freak who likes to bring up new ideas.

There are a small group of people who I really listen to. Who give opinions I value. Sales numbers don't say much to me.

46:20 - 48:30 Paul about travelling

I visit places all over the world with my job. To bad I have no time to really get to know the places.

New York is such an example. Airplane to hotel to club to hotel to airport. It's exciting to travel.

My home is the place where people live who are important to me. That could be anywhere. But on the other hand Berlin is very important to me.

I fly alot so you get some experience. I watch blacklists and only fly with certain types of planes and airlines.

48:30 - 53:00 Paul in Miami

You have fun but it's also a hard job. Traveling, interviews, catching musical trends. It's all a part of being a DJ. I'm not the kind of guy that likes walking around with a camera following me. I feel uncomfortable with that.

In America dance culture is heading the same way in as in Europe. Also at magazines as Rolling Stone things are changing. The first time I was in the USA was in 1994. Because I didn't act as the arrogant European, I got a large crowd of people who enjoy my music.

53:00 - 56:40 Paul about Alanis Morissette

Alanis Morissette is a great example of music with a message. Everything of the track is important. For example 'When I would be good'. The flute says even more about the track then what she sings. I admire how she shows her emotions to the listener. I also appreciate 'The Coach" from her second album. Very special musical style. That's why I remixed it to a track that fits a DJ-set from Paul van Duck. I would find it interesting to know what she thinks of it. Her feedback would be exciting to hear. I had the opportunity to get to know her. The music is too important to me, I wouldn't want to be influenced by the fact that I like or dislike her as a person. I wan't to hear her music pure.

56:40 - 58:30 His studio

My music is mostly based on experiences or ideas. The creation of music is very intensive. For example when I saw Schindler's list. I just had to make music based on the emotions I had.

I started making something I couldn't finish cause I didn't feel that emotion I had again

58:30 - 64:00 Mexico city gig (For an angel) + movie soundtrack

Making film music normally isn't that exciting, cause the director asks to make something sad and you have to do so. This Mexican project is so much different. The pictures inspire me very much. I just wanted to cooperate. The first time I played in Mexico was in 1994. The director bought all my CD's after he heard me. I don't speak Spanish, but the pictures inspired me. Every song has a certain meaning in every scene of the movie.

64:00 - 66:14 Paul relaxing at home

I hope to make a living with making music until I die. Playing still makes so much fun. The traveling was very annoying at times. Also the whole business around it made me think about why I still wanted to do it. But the love for music is so strong. I will always love to bring the music that I love closer to people.

66:14 - 69:11 Titles + Bloopers
