Global Underground 043 - Joris Voorn in Rotterdam

Just announced. I wasn't a fan of the Patrice Baumel one (thought there were so many parts where the flow and the pacing just flatlined) but I love Voorn, and his 2019 EM was one of the best sets I've heard last year. Just wondering how the hell they'll fit the TL on the back of the CD case :P
makes sense he would do it in his backyard, considering the travel ban , it used to be a tradition for dj's to travel to Asia or south America to mix this, with that being said I'm looking forward to it .
Hey, they made the TL fit on Balance 14, I'm sure they'll work something out here.
Anyway, another big step in the right direction. At this rate I imagine GU will eventually find itself somewhere between Balance and Fabric, though I wouldn't be surprised if it just becomes another Balance with a different titling system.
Speaking of titles, I was reflecting on how Voorn was planning to use one another one of his technical megamixes to reflect the flavor of Rotterdam, when I found myself asking: how much have these cities really factored into the mix in the first place? I mean, there's nothing distinctly 'Taipei' about GU: 31, or 'San Francisco' about GU: 09 (yes, except for the Haight Street-sounds intro that preceded the first disc- one of the few times I can actually recall GU doing anything to add the city's flavor into the music itself). The only mix that actually 'felt' like its respective city was GU: Reykjavik.
Or maybe that was never the point, but GU has always pushed this angle of being 'transported' to the respective city such that I suspect it's intended to be a bit more than merely a retrospective mix of a recent set that was played there. This whole 'city series' gimmick may have been an effective marketing tool, but I wonder if it's ultimately little more than that.
Those booklets sure are nice though, and make for great collector pieces. Glad I still have all of mine.
Hmm, yeah the only CDs that I really felt accurately conveyed their host city were Reykjavik, as you said, as well as Digweed in HK. The first disk especially conveyed the back alleys of HK, while the climax of both disks made you feel as you were on top of Mt Victoria.
I think it's a misconception that the Cities Series was ever about capturing the feel of a locale. The whole point was of a global underground - IE: the same sound all over the world. Really the concept was two ravers from Newcastle, Northern England flying a series of mostly British DJs around the globe and taking the sound of British superclubs with them. It's only really in recent years that the DJs have become more international and there's been more of an attempt to tie DJ and city together.

Some nice tracks on there, Genius of Time - Peace Bird is a particular favorite of mine.
i heard the booklet is 34 pages long, so it might be worth getting the physical for that , and yes lot of jams on there....incuding ambient fill.

So it was released today. I'm currently 11 minutes in and the beginning is very promising!
I just skimmed through the tracks on Apple Music and I might end up picking this up. I like how his remix of L.S.G. - Train Of Thought is featured on the trailer. It stays pretty true to the original but added some twinkly sounds to it. I hope it is released in full length version.
I see a listing on Juno that claims to be an unmixed version with 28 tracks on the first disc and 27 on second and it includes the remix of Train Of Thought. Nothing like that is listed on the GU shop and digital release on Beatport has it omitted with others tracks too.

It's quite nice. Better than Patrice Baumel's entry into the series, which tried a similarly, but slightly less ambitious, cluttered tracklist. In terms of studio craft, Voorn has been doing this for over a decade now and knows how to keep these mash-up mixes from sounding too busy.
However, as always, I feel the Essential Mix he did last year was miles better. I need to re-listen to that set and compare, but it felt like that one was very similar in style but had some genuine bombs at its peak. This is more of a smooth, club-flavoured soundscape; a mood trip with beats, the kind of thing I'd play while reading a sci-fi novel.
