Deeve - Temptations #018 (June 2021) - Progressive Breaks

A few weeks ago, I did a livestream at Beatports "Link Weekly" show. Due to some tech issues I had to play with my fallback setup, which resulted in an interesting journey because my track selection got completely spontaneous rather than having pre-planned a direction for the set. That set is recorded here, including an unreleased breakbeat production of mine which is going to see the light of day soon:

Junes edition of my monthly Temptations mix series represents what I actually had in mind for that livestream. The progressive breaks sound or simply breakbeat represents something twisted which Ive been enthusiastic about since the 90s. I always use some productions of this genre throughout my set, as I've always found that moment at festivals very special when the sound transitions from breakbeat to 4/4. Recently, Ive compiled some pure breakbeat mixes, which made some of my listeners asking me to put out more mixes of that style. So, heres Temptations #018 delivering exactly that, just in time for Summer vibes!

Nice set. I'm always a sucker for prog breaks, and it's good to hear the sound done with modern tunes in 2021. My only tiny, tiny gripe is that the Fretwell Remix of Dust was a bit quiet compared to the other tunes. Always a peril when you mix in something old with new material.

Thanks for listening, and 100% agreed re mixing old tunes with new ones!
In these moments I'm always like "am I turning that gain higher now or rather not" ...because it's just the overall sound design, the different compression and punchiness, the mixdown and mastering of those older tunes - so sometimes it doesn't help much to go crazy with the gain, I feel.

In any case, glad you liked it mate!

I was lurking back when you posted this and gave it a few listens. It's actually helped me get back into the breaks genre a little bit, and sparked the planning phases for a new mix I'm considering. Thanks for that haha!

Love how the old sounds are coming back a little bit in modern tracks. I have a feeling Sasha's recent mix series (LUZoSCURA) has had a hand in helping push it a little more as well.

Haha thats great feedback, glad to hear it inspired you!

Yes, while the sound never was completely gone, the last 1.5 years have still been a little renaissance for the genre. Sasha & Digweed have helped keeping this alive, certainly. Also, its a sound you can easily enjoy on the couch, so works well with lockdowns too.
