Live VS. Studio...

i wasn't able to find any discussion on this topic so i thought i'd start one...

Does anybody here produce for live performance and studio recording?

The reason i asked is we are currently integrating a Layla to allow for digital multi-tracking of our "songs" (that were created for live performance) and what i am wondering is...

Do you produce different versions for live and recording or do you use just use the same components?

How crucial is it to you that your live and recorded versions sound exactly the same?

What sort of live set-up do you use? (ie. central sequence to modules/synths, Pre-recorded & played back from multitrack, independant sequecing on layered modules etc)

What is the biggest difference for you in approaching live VS. Recording???

hey, I produce for both live and "normal" versions. The main difference is that the live version only consists of a pattern of a couple of measures, and the studio version is just being worked out all the way. I don't think a live version should be as similar to the studio version as possible....it's more fun to put in a couple of redundant channels, so you have a couple of "choices" live. ah well

yeah our studio stuff is turning out like 180 degrees from the live versions...which i prefer as i think live should be more organic and the studio more mathmatical

What's that, how does it work?

The whole question of how to do, say, uplifting tracks live has been plaguing me a while. Playing backing tracks off a sequencer or CD and then just playing the main reprise with a giant synth patch is easy, but what about the counter-riffs, buildups, and so on? There are obvious "cheat" ways to do it, but why look like a busker on stage?
The more busy finger/foot work involved, the better the show!

we bought the older 20bit version from a friend...

...basically the layla will allow us to record from 8 inputs onto the hard-drive simultaneously...our old method envolved jamming straight to CD...which we have good luck with but not as much precision as we'd like...ergo the layla came home...now we will push a jam session into the computer and the re-mix the chunks back into tracks etc: )

on playing live we sort of skipped the idea of a master sequence...instead we sequence individual components in the overall rig that we then mix and tweak together with other components to form "songs"...it has a certain jazz jam-session feel to it...we've never played the same song live more than once...accordingly if we were to attempt an uplifting track i would prolly create the floaty uplifting parts on a cople of the synths and the force the mix of all the gear to pull the uplifting portions in at the appropriate time...
