DJ mag to release A TRANCE HISTORY ENCYCLOPEDIA

https://djmag.com/news/trance-histo...e-released-week

A trance history encyclopedia is set to be published this week.

Incoming via Dutch publishing house Mary Go Wild, Hypnotised: A Journey Through Trance Music (1990-2005) is the first trance archive of its kind, covering both the beginning and seminal periods of the trance scene.

Penned by writer Arjan Rietveld, Hypnotised compiles a near-complete discography of 500 essential records, 75 record labels and 25 albums, as well in-depth interviews with 35 influential artists and label owners including Solarstone, Airwave, Banco de Gaia, Sander Kleinenberg, Cosmic Baby, Bonzai Records Christian Fly Pieters and MFSs Mark Reeder.

The book will also land alongside a VA compilation, spotlighting the Dutch contribution to trances nascence. Incoming via Black Hole Recordings, it features 27 tracks from 9 influential Dutch labels, including monikers from Dutch trance legends Armin van Buuren, DJ Tiësto and Ferry Corsten.

You can find out more about Hypnotised: A Journey Through Trance Music (1990-2005) and pre-order the book, which will be available this Friday 3rd September, here.

Since the early 90s, when pioneers like Ferry Corsten, Paul Van Dyk, and Jam & Spoon crafted some of the earliest and best-loved trance records, the genre has gone through huge swings in popularity. Today, the sound is as strong as ever, as artists like Armin van Buuren, Above & Beyond, and plenty of newcomers fly the flag for trance the world over. In a 2019 feature for DJ Mag, we spoke to some of the genre's greatest producers to find out more about the enduring appeal of trance.

Watch the story of how Chicane made one of the most iconic '90s trance tracks of all time, 'Saltwater', here.

Much as I enjoy Toby Marks' music, he has about as much to do with trance music as Bill Laswell.

Did they make the text so large just so they could increase the number of pages?

Perhaps they know the majority of their customer base have been subjected to laser beams.

The book looks really tall though

Thank you to anyone who ever contributed to or paved the way for trance.

Yep, pretty much just another excuse to fellatio Dutch producers.

/gads, what a shite cover

EDIT: Okay, just noticed this in the PR blurb...

"The 322-page book spans a near-complete discography of *supposedly* essential albums"

Cripes, even they aren't confident in this being any sort of authority in the subject matter.

I may just spend the 30 to get it over here to read how much weirdness is in there. Also whoever took that pic used the flash so you can barely read the words...

Don't judge a book by its cover they say, but seeing as there's a few pages to be looked at: that listing of records seems decidedly random, unless there's another 'B' section elsewhere in the book (Brainchild - Synfonica but not Symmetry?).

A "near-complete" list of "essential trance releases" makes no sense whatsoever. If you want to give a list of what you consider essential (as opposed to an actual complete overview) you might as well give your full list... Bad blurb.

That page mentioning "Matthew Dekay, Rank 1 and Sander Kleinenberg" might as well be typical. SK is probably dragged into the trance zone because they tried to make My Lexicon a commercial success at the turn of the millennium. Matthew Kerkhoff (Dekay) strictly speaking should only belong here if the book actually discusses his early stuff, before he became "Dekay" (e.g. as co-producer of Richard Durand before he became Durand and of others). I wonder if any attention will be paid to that - basically all the Dutch trance that didn't get airtime through the sets of Armin, Ferry and Tijs and their mix CDs. Discussing merely the famous names isn't going to give a balanced picture of anything.
(In other words: I expect a proper discussion of the work of Michiel van der Kuy, Vincent de Moor, Jack Molenschot, Ralph Barendse, Michel Pollen, Marco V and Benjamin Kuyten, Cor Sangers, Quint Bleijenberg, Mustafa Alici, Richard van Dongen, Nic Vegter, Georgio Schultz, Ferruccio Tebaldi, Marcel Hol, Gert-Jan Bel and all the others alongside and before them or I'm not interested. )

Re: the last image: what seems missing is a footnote saying "taken directly from Discogs" (the aliases, groups part).

I suppose perhaps the book is aimed at least in part at the kind of people who would normally only read a football player's biography. Normal-sized type might no longer be appropriate.

This came out back in September, so not "last week". In a sign that we truly are living in the end of days, Resident Advisor of all places published an article by the author to promote it (https://ra.co/features/3896). That article fired the first warning shot that the book's quality may not actually be that high by getting the release date of PVD's remix of Love Stimulation wrong by four years.

And right here is the second warning shot. Even just reading the back of the book or one of those random excerpts from inside, I can see a few examples of my mother tongue being treated rather roughly by Mr Rietveld, who as far as I can tell from Google is a complete amateur as a music writer.

Well fuck, maybe I should write one for progressive house in that case?

Sounds good, mate. Your diction was always impeccable even if it came at my expense.
