Should the Firefighters have a pay rise?
Theres a thread in chillout but this is where is counts, opinions?
Yeah they're risking their lives all the time, and if Tony Blair got a 41% pay rise last year they deserve one
A 40% rise would be ridiculous...

The money has to come from somehwere tho, would you be willing to pay extra tax to pay for it?
for sure they do deserve more money but i think they went about it the wrong way, instead of demanding %40 up front they should have gone for increments, like a 20% rise str8 away with the other 20% to be added over the next 3 years or something similar.
would have been less of a shock to the system then.
As for us paying more tax, if everyone paid just 1p more tax a week that would cover a lot of it.
if u break it all down, their money could come from many sources, we already pay in income tax and council tax, but instead of the councils and governments paying ppl like nurses and firefighters a decent wage, they spend it on crap.
examples: i am sure john prescott does not need 2 jaguars paid for by us, i am sure the blairs do not need 2 homes, one a fuck off massive country house which they hardly ever use and costs a small fortune to run paid for by us and spesh as he has his own damn mansion anyway !
In this modern world of communications DO we really need to have to pay to send Blair and all the press and bodyguards and personal staff on a private jumbojet to the USA twice a week just so that Bush can plant him one up the arse ?
just the fuel for those 2 flights would pay a fireman for a good few weeks.
IMO we have got things way out of proportion on what this government considers important ways to spend OUR money.
None of that will pay for jack, its billions that will be needed to be set aside for the extra pay. Tony bleeeeer is only on 70k a year, it aint that much considering he runs the country.

Its ridiculas!!
can you imagine the backlash from other trade unions if the government agrees to a 40% pay rise for the firefighters???
your talking about one strike now...
there would be many more from the police, ambulance, NHS, and go knows who else as theyr unions would issue the same demands!!
Give the fireman a pay increase by all means..but 40% is just greedy imo

If you believe that salary should be based on the risk these people are putting themselves under, then surely the highest paid profession should be a stuntman or something? |
Good point! Tell you what ill get split da vinyl from juno and tuneinn and you get me a DJM600S, 2 Numark TTX1s and 2 Stanton STR8 arms(I aint decided which i prefer yet).

Boring economic Explanation
!) There is a large supply of firefighters, so it is currently more important to invest in the nurse and teacher crises. Will a massive lack of staff. This is a lot more important
2)Where is this extra money for the huge pay increase coming from. usually increased taxs, which most people dont like to pay
3) If firefighters get a 40% pay rise it will mean that teachers, nurses, doctors would all expect a pay rise, because they would feel their job is just as important
4)Firefighting is not a full time job, and most have second jobs, which isnt because they have poor wages, more because they have the time to get them
5)Due to substitutionn effects it may in the long run cause a drop in firefighters.
Anyway that is why they shouldnt
A 11% rise has been offered, which would mean they are payed around the same as teachers, nurses etc. So i think they should have accepted that
I think that 40% is madness, yes they risk their life everyday, but they dont have much stress with their job like teachers and nurses.
Anyway i think they should get payed in line with other public services, but 40% is way too much for how mnay hours they work for, and the fact that atm the goverment cant afford it, which could effect education, health, or mean even higher taxs
So that is the economic view
hehe
*falls asleep*

i think 40% is too much, but 20% would be a good figure, the thing is it never gets raised so it should beraised a little bit each year to avoid all this crap!
Firefighters are heroes, saving lives everyday. Yet they get paid about as much as a dustbin man, that sux. They should definately get more than the fukking pigs. All they do is go round and arrest people for having bald tyres on cars and drinking a kaliber before driving. They never manage to catch any real crooks, whereas firefighters prevent people from actully dying. They got my vote, Tony Blair is a total cock jockey for not giving them the pay increase they want. I am sure if his dear cherie set herself on fire with the bunson burner she uses to get rid of her armpit hair and died cos the green goddesses couldn't get to her in time he would have a different opinon!
