Opinions on djmag's #1...DJ Tiesto

Im sure many of you have heard about Tiesto claiming his rightful #1 spot on djmag's rank. Many brits aren't happy with this...some saying that he shouldn't be #1. What do you guys think??

Posted by malek on Nov-14-2002 21:47:

that he should be number 1.

Posted by E*Master on Nov-14-2002 21:48:

Tiesto is Great, But I would have preffered Armin as number one. But the way Armin is going he will be number one for sure next year. So until then I will wait.

Posted by malek on Nov-14-2002 21:53:

yeah i'm with you on that one. its just that tiesto deseves a number one, even tho he might not be the best this year. the number one should be seen as a reward for his career as a "whole".

Yes, that is true. Good point (thumbs up). But I am certain Armin Will Have number one next year.

KarateKid

this DJ ranking is so subjective .. so again dun take it too seriously

altho i think Tiesto deserves #1.. he's worked hard for a long time and created a lot of very memorable tracks for the scene. let him have it for atleast 1 year ..

Posted by kwongandy on Nov-15-2002 00:11:

i have been a tiesto follower since 1999. always been in my top 5. i don't care if he falls off the top 100 because i'll still go see him play live. too much emphasis on who is the best each year. my favourite djs are oakie, pvd and tiesto. i'll go see them play regardless of what the rest of the masses are saying.

Posted by Flec on Nov-15-2002 01:06:

since this top100 is based on popularity i would say its fairly accurate

Personally after DD 2002....tiesto's year went downhill....he kept playing the same damn tracks and his mixing became rubbish. Sasha should have got the nod for top dj because his airdrawndagger was amazing and the sets I heard from him were amazing but then again, I did vote in this poll and the fans have spoken....till next year I guess.

it could also be that Sasha dorped a spot do to the fact that he took some time off to work on the rest of the album. Plus he was in a car accident and took time to recover. And after trying to get back into the DJ'ing 6 months later he said it was not the same he had problems getting back to the way it was before. I mean mixing wise. And no I am not makin any of this up it's all words spoken by Sasha when he was interviewed for www.i-dj.co.uk

Posted by diamondx65 on Nov-15-2002 01:57:

I completely agree with you ahlamalek, tiesto has worked real hard for that number one spot and my opinion he sure deserves it...

Also every year the number one dj changes and armin would definately deserve that number one spot as well.

I just wish that Mauro Picotto and Sander Kleinenberg would of made it into the top ten, they deserve to be amongst the best!!!!

Posted by Durafei on Nov-15-2002 02:03:

I don't know.. I don't think Armin deserves #1 spot.
There is nothing unique or special about him. He always plays a bunch of good new tracks, but I think something is missing about him that must be there to be #1. Whenever I hear him live I feel that the order of his tracks is somewhat random. There is no journey like there is with Tiesto(when he is at his top).

On popularity, no doubt that Tiesto would've gotten it. Touring with Moby and that CNN interview really helped him gain some votes. Did he deserve it? Well, he worked hard...accomplished a lot in the past (got me into the music)...but in 2002, other garnering lots of attention (from Dutch Dimension, Area:2), he did shit all.

PvD should do a massive US tour, so he can finally claim that number 1 spot like he deserves. But yeah, this list is pure popularity...there's no way in hell that DJ's like Dave Seaman and Nick Warren should be placed in the 30's, while the likes of Judge Jules, Paul Oakenfold, Corsten or even the good trance DJ's like AvB are in the top 10.

Oh man, and don't even get me started on Corsten being in the top 10....

Well I personally like Tiesto's style. Most of his sets are blissful and listening to them...I rarely find myself forwarding thru them. There are some sets which I personally found it hard to believe that Tiesto was behind it. I think it was deserved because of his contributions to the trance scene, whether it be from producing tracks...remixing them to controlling massive crowds(like Gatecrashers@NEC spring 2002). I was able to witness this set...absolutely unbelieveable...I was in awe during his whole set. I, for one, am looking forward to his Toronto visit December 14th..regardless of his mixing styles becoming sloppy.
There are other many great DJs(marco v's position I was a bit disappointed), but I think Tiesto stands out...for his enormous contribution...especially for his amazing remixes/producing to go along with being a DJ

thank you for putting it into words.. exactly my thoughts on the matter..

yep....when he's at the top, his track selections are unique...his style is uncomparable. I certainly hope this will happen during his visit to Toronto....im looking forward to this

I asked this question in another thread...but does anyone know how much Tiesto gets per set? outta curiousity...

Posted by TheDemon on Nov-17-2002 04:44:

Well he's number one , and there is nothing we can do about it. But that dont mean that he's number one with everyone, so if you dont like him, hey, who said you have to listen to him.

Some of you guys really piss me off.

"It's subjective wah wah....it's a popularity contest". For FU*K SAKE....OF COURSE IT IS! It was a popularity contest when Sasha and Digweed and Oakey were winning the damn thing.

Would you rather have a bunch of random Dj's selecting the winner...because then all you would get is ass-kissing like the Oscars and sports awards and MTV awards and such. The FANS were allowed to vote...thousands of fans...there were no restrictions on who could vote at all.....any damn fan of music could vote.

Tiesto won...that means most people think he is the best Dj in the world. Maybe he isn't the best mixer in the world, but his sets make people happier than any other DJ. Denzel Washington did NOT deserve the Oscar for Best Actor for TRAINING DAY...he won because he has had so many great peformances that it was time for him to win.

Same with Tiesto here....perhaps Tiesto's year wasn't as great in 2002 but he has been NUMBER ONE since 1999. All the Magiks, the ISOS...when he was dropping those, stupid Oakey, Sasha and Digweed were winning. Now THAT is not fair.

So quit your damn whining and accept that right now, Tiesto is the world's favourite. I love Armin but he is just way too damn young and has not been around long enough to win over Tiesto. His time will come.

DjSmitty, I agree with most of what you said, but cool it boy. This is a forum for discussion, people have the right to discuss and question whatever they want.

Durafei, I like Brunette totally agree with you on AVB. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy his sets, but haven't thought the two I heard were anything particularly inspiring. He is a great guy, good tracks, and gets you in the mood, but I don't think his sets merit a top 10 rank, though I realize many TA's will be pissed off to hear that.

Tiesto I don't think deserved #1 this year, but like DJ Smitty said, he's probably earned it over time and a couple of his sets were big influences on getting me into the music.

Now, of course we all have different tastes, but who says only the top 10 are good DJ's??? For god sake, top 100 IN THE WORLD is pretty damn good, so be happy for your fav DJ if he\she made it.

Posted by Mandrick_v on Nov-17-2002 21:58:

I just watching videos from Kulhaus oct 6 2001

Damn! There is no doubt he is # 1. the vibe was there is just undescripapapababababable

BTW, the new set 10-30-2002 Global from SSL is so good, and there almost all the new staff mixed perfectly. FLOW!!!!!!!!!

Posted by mecha on Nov-17-2002 22:08:

I still think sasha should be number 1

Posted by TheNeonAlien on Nov-17-2002 22:31:

Picotto should be up there, just becasue he changed into a kinda techno purist. I cant believe they dropped him outta top ten. I dont mind Tiesto number one. He's always been a premiere dj in my eyes so he's deserving. AVB BLAH! dont like his boring trance.

Glad that Joy Kitikonti made the list.

Picotto is god for me he doesnt need a number 1 beside his name to convince me that he is the greatest! PERIOD.

by the looks of it the list was compiled by popularity. not originality and style! Sell more records, your going to be up there.

Exactly. Took the words right out of my mouth. My impression of AVB even though he is one of my fav djs is that he just drops track after track. Doesnt play around with them much. Winamp can do that too.

Tiesto on the other hand is by far way more talented than AVB. There are many factors in my opinion which makes a dj #1.
