Will TranceAddict outlive Twitter?

Place your bets now, folks!

Posted by LoveHate on Nov-19-2022 03:10:

TA is already dead since the search function is broken and there is no signs of it ever getting fixed . Searching TA via google is not the same thing although sometimes you can find what you were looking for. Twitter seems to be on life support, but i think it will survive. It is kind of entertaining to see whats going on with it especially the news headlines.

I'd love for it to.

I didn't really follow Musk before all this, and after the sink thing, for a moment, I wished I'd never even heard of him. But now, after having been subjected to more of him, I've come to realize that most of these tech billionaires unwittingly provide lots of fun entertainment for us normal folk to enjoy. From Bezos's unconvincing laughter, to Musk's absolute inability to see himself for the wazzock he is, to Zuckerberg's machine-like attempts to emote excitement at Instagram's new face filters, it has all suddenly become truly delightful for me to experience.

And the fact that Musk, in the end, did not want to buy Twitter, but was forced to.. Fuck me all night long. I feel like all this finally hit me today, and I've had fun ever since.

What comes to Twitter, I'm hoping it will go down in flames ASAP now that it's Musk's, but I don't think it will. Its nature is sure to change though, as he seems to want to make it cater better to advertisers. A man who's awful enough to think up a heinous concept like "space billboards" will probably milk everything he can out of Twitter and somehow make it work for himself in the end.

ELON: "You know I'm so fuckin' rich, I can buy your app at an over-inflated price and not even blink twice, right?"
TWITTER: "Sold!"
ELON: "Wait, what!?"
LAWYERS: "Yep, that's a legit sale."
ELON: "Th' fu...?"

Yeah, trying to make money off of Twitter - something it's never been able to really do - is the least of his problems. Firing/Relieving/Folks-Noping-Out around 75-80% of the staff is nothing less than a complete IT disaster waiting to happen.

Here's a list of things that could go wrong in just the next few weeks:

Twitter is sooo fucked!

TranceAddict will live forever, baby. We're just like roaches.

If Elon ever makes an offer to acquire TA, please refuse to entertain the notion, Del.

I doubt Elon understands vBulletin

You've been here through the thick and thin. I always left when times got hard.

I doubt he understands much except publicity.

As long as Swamper keeps paying the bills, I'd bet TA will outlive Twitter.

Posted by Midlothian on May-09-2023 11:28:

That and as long as he keeps his fingers off any kind of "update to 2023 stylee" button.

Mind you, the fact that all this is still (almost?) identical to what it was back in the glory days of 2001, in a good way, is not to be underestimated. And I suppose the people are more or less equally degenerate still.

If swamper were to ever die, unto whom has the TA estate been bequeathed?

Grandpa Swamper can't die, but if you do, can you unban all my alts... And fix the search engine?

Maybe make tranceGPT that can do impressions of Bas or that dude (can't remember his name) that TA COR crowd-funded his first TRANS sex experience? Oh the irony... "TRANCE FOR TRANS" campaign needs to live on. Viva la TRANS! Viva la TRANCE!

Shall we add Reddit to this quandary?

I mean, if Reddit does go tits up from its recent nonsense, I could see web forums making a minor comeback.

I don't know what to click on with reddit down...I don't use it but discord might be the next thing to move to.

Tbh I really miss the old Google Homepage, where it was just a collection of your favorite RSS feeds so you could stay updated directly with the websites you wanted to follow. Reddit was great in basically allowing other people to curate that feed for you, with the categories you follow thrown in a pool and sorted by algorithm.

The Reddit API should certainly cost money and any apps using it should pay their proportional amount per usage. However, Reddit's prices are insane and are clearly designed to destroy 3rd party apps. Like, I get it. Reddit is free, and isn't really profitable outside of ads. There aren't any alternate Facebook apps. So it makes sense that they would want to force users to use the app that shows ads. They are going about this wrong, they need to just reduce the prices a little bit and call it a win. Holding out for the end of the blackout and assuming that most users won't care might wind up in the death of the website. I'm personally trying to use Reddit less, but it has swallowed up so much of my browsing habits that I'm having a tough time replacing it.

Agreed, I could tell by that cheap AMA from Spez that he is a tool. Seems to hold grudges which is wild for a business. I may do the same, do less and less reddit, just replace it with something else...maybe ride a bike!

For a site that size it is really CRAZY to me how they are ignoring what so many moderators (+ users) are upset about! Slap in the face to ppl who dedicate so much time to the growth of what its become. I was a big time digg.com user and gradually, years later, ended up on Reddit (mostly browsing).

It's a great site for discussion on certain topics but it has its faults - you are mostly lost in the noise if you get to a thread more than 24 hours later and post a new reply -- unless you piggy back off a popular comment and your post gets noticed that way. Also easily becomes an echo chamber when you're downvoted by loyalists or banned by power hungry mods.

Also, old.reddit.com all the way, lol

Posted by JEO on Jun-14-2023 19:27:

I find Reddit's "subthread" UX awful. Big reason for why I've never used it that much. Hacker News does something similar with subthreads, and as much as I like the content, I never read through a whole thread if it has more than ~30 posts. That's where traditional forums are superior. No problem reading through a whole thread with 200 replies, even when you discover it late.
