Proper monitors / PA for mixing...

I was wondering what is the ideal monitor solution for mixing in the bedroom?

I have been using a midrange stereo system with bookshelf sized speakers and a small sub as my monitors. I know this is a far, far cry from the expensive powered studio monitors used in clubs, etc., so I'm curious to hear what amplification other people have in their bedrooms for mixing.

hifi systems for bedroom monitoring work great. i have reference bookshelves on stands and a sub... 10 watts going to each speaker with a pair of single ended triode amps that i build and it works great. i cant imagine having more than 10 watts... that would be rediculously loud

i say who cares what everyone else has... as long as youre satisfied and as long as you can mix, its all good huh?

10 watts! I've seen some pretty decent speakers but 10 watts is nothing..

my speakers are 250W RMS, and my amp puts out 200W per channel, and that isn't enough for me.

plus i have 2 MORE amps and 4 more speakers hooked up as well.

one for the house(so i can put em whereever i want for parties), one for monitoring, one for blasting straight out from the decks.

10watts? i think my dinky little computer speakers are more than that..

my computer speakers are 8, the speakers i use are 150w

too lazy to check my amp, but it works just fine.

I got me the Behringer Truth Monitors. Not much bass output, but very clear output. its bi-amped...highs are at 75W and lows are at 125W i believe...forgot.

But yea, monitors for mixing at home, as long as u can hear the tracks and can separate the beats/hihats/kicks, it's ALLLLLL good. i spent all of last year mixing with some computer speakers. hehe. It also depends on where you are, i live in an apartment in downtown NYC; not gonna get away with some crazy soundsystem, so why bother?

What? Computer speakers for mixing?! The ONLY place I use computer speakers is at my job for low-volume listening (perks of having an office ). My main PC's at home are hooked to amps & speakers, and nothing less than 50 watts...

I guess my main concern was hearing the monitors for mixing. I had to reposition the speakers to point at me instead of toward the middle of the room. At 50 watts the system is plenty loud enough for me to mix, but the speakers aparently have a narrow field and need to be aimed. The sub does help a lot, however, especially when listening to the kick drum.

I would like to get an amp & monitors at some point. Does anyone have recommendations on a nice midrange (priced) setup? I would also be using it as a PA for band practices and recording, if it could match the volume of my Marshall tube guitar amp.

Well, you would, Ideally, get some "Near Field Active Studio monitors"..

Go to a musician's store and demo some...

Failing that, some Monsoon PlanarMedia 9 computer speakers ($85) would be decent... The Diva Swan M-200 Active bookshelf speaker system is good too (check the www.3dsoundsurge.com review).

But, seriously, check professional audio stores for near-field active studio monitors...

Thanks for everyone's input. I'm thinking of heading up to my local Mars music store. Since they are going out of business (bankruptcy), maybe I can score a good deal on some active monitors.

Let's see, home monitors..well, I use my MAckie SRM450s turned Waaaaay down.
