-- Best version of 1998?

Best version of 1998?

There have been many versions over the years, but I can honestly say that PvD's remix is the best. The remix blurs the line between uplifting trance and goa trance, and the breakdown midway through the track that leads into the massive arpeggio is what really makes his remix stand out

I agree, PVD did it best! There were a few decent remixes but most aren't very memorable, to be honest.

My favorite versions:

1. Paul Van Dyk Remix
2. Neo & Farina (Binary Refined)
3. Matt Darey Remix
4. Alex MORPH Remix

I only heard it live once and it was J00F playing the Protoculture Remix. It's cheesy on it's own IMO but man did the crowd react positively to it.

This is a pretty respectable ranking for a top 4 list.

I definitely see this sounding better than it does live.

Talla 2XLC made a remake under his own alias in 2024. I heard a DJ play it live in Camden Town and it sounded incredible.

I think this is also the only time I've heard it played out live.

The Gouryella remix is probably the version that gives me the most nostalgia, given it was on one of the first mix CDs I ever bought, but the Matt Darey one is probably the best. Has a touch of his Li Kwan sound to the production and I always liked the little counterpoint he added over the top of the main riff.

Interesting pick. Perhaps my views on other remixes got a bit jaded compared to the PvD remix, but Matt Darey does have that euphoric sound that still sticks out to this day.

PVD
Matt Darey
Gouryella
Kaycee

Aside from the original, I liked the Kaycee Remix the best. I didn't really like any other remixes of the track.

Kaycee's tracks were usually pumping and energetic, but their remix for 1998 was an interesting approach.

Victor Ruiz extended remix has done the job for a few years now

Love

i've never really loved it, coz i don't like the last 6 or so notes of the melody. so i've always preferred the versions which minimise that part of the track.

When I was about 14 years old. If you've got a lot of time to waste, former TA Woony invited me to do a long interview-article on his blog where we talked through both the history of trance music and my own personal relationship with listening to it, going back to buying those old Euphoria and Trance Nation CDs. I say some relatively nice things about Ferry Corsten and Gouryella, and some less nice things about Rank 1 - Airwave.

this was a really great read, thanks for sharing. it's fascinating (to me at any rate) that we'll both tell people we love trance, yet our venn diagram barely even touches loved woony pointing out it's OK to like shit music!

It's also interesting reading this kind of stuff from people who actually lived it live (rather than just looking into it from afar in an academic sense).

quote:

If you are now confused about the difference between progressive trance versus progressive house then you would be justified in your confusion. To be honest, if you just go by BPM over 135 is progressive trance, under 135 is progressive house youll probably be right most of the time.

it's good to know i am not alone.

eta- oh, i was hoping for an adagio reference (ferry's) because while legend b - lost in love was my first, adagio was the watershed moment which brought me to places like here to meet cunts like you.
