Dunno too young for hard trance?

i think yall know that im in 8th grade...and i spin hard trance.

im also on tha middle school student council...and they say that it would be ok if i mix at one of the school partys. (the party would be for 6th-8th grades)

but even in that other post...somethin like "worst dj night ever", even college students didnt like trance...and were all beggin for hip-hop.

so im thinkin from droppin the opprotunity b-cuz the rest of the school will probably just boo me off cuz they dont like techno(the laymen term for any electronic music)

the only other idea i got is to split the night of the party up between me and atleast one of the other hip-hop djs in the school.

so i would get somethin like an hour to spin, and my friend would take up another hour.

I think it's cool that you're thinking about what the crowd actually wants to hear. My advise would be to drop a few 'very recognizable commercial tracks' like ATB- 9pm,,, Dirty Vegas- Days Go By,,, etc. If people seem to be liking that then try some new quality tracks and see what happens

Posted by Devbert on Nov-19-2002 06:19:

remember my college deal was west coast so I dont know how it works on the east coast.

Posted by musicaddict on Nov-19-2002 06:24:

yeah..6 and 8th graders..what do they know? and thats what sucks about djing..when u wanna mix what u like u know u'll be booed off coz where your spinning at peeps only listen to cheezy mainstream stuff that gets played over and over on the radio.

just do what 24K said..drop some stuff that everybody know i.e heaven, atb, etc. then drop in some of the stuff ulike..

i never said u aite, acid john? hehe just the general 6/8 graders, u know what i mean.

Posted by Acid John on Nov-19-2002 06:52:

yea...i agree. the general 8th grader knows jack shit about djing.

Posted by jdat on Nov-19-2002 06:56:

play some *accesible* music if you know what I mean ( something that they'll *understand* )

and for the occasion don't be scared to play trance/house/techno and then a track of rap then more electronic shit

really it doesn't matter if you do it that way and that's what I'd suggest.

I'd say even go back to back with the hip hop djs like you do a couple tracks then one of them does a couple tracks then you hit it up again and so on

but if you go all the way *electronic* I think you'll scare them ( unless you play shit they might know .... or stuff that's really *accesible )

Hello!

What i propose is.. start with the more commercial cheese... then slowly build ur way into more underground regions... if you sense a disturbance in the force.. then switch back...

hey man... 8th grader DJ is way cool.. cause u'll be famously remmebered in ur school and the chicks.. they dig DJ'z!!!

and who knows.. ppl who are into trance might come up to you later that you never knew liked trance b4...

so yeah.. up 2 U bRo

Posted by Luke Terry on Nov-19-2002 11:27:

Cool

how old is 8th grade ?

most ppl will generally take the hard route in2 trance, like the cheesey hard house with synths kinda thing

Posted by EbolaCola on Nov-19-2002 11:28:

East Coast is a lot worse. You have the ignorant tasteless teenage kids who blare hip hop and top 40 crap through the hallways at my school. On Wednesdays it's "Music on the air day" which basically means they play music on the P.A. while we switch classes. All they play is Top 40, and some even with the vulgar language in it, WTF!?!? The school allows this? Goddamn I hate some people.

Posted by futurevision on Nov-19-2002 13:47:

well in at that age

spin alot and heaps of CHEESE and all the mainstream stuff you hear on the radio, tv......etc......

but plenty of cheese for them

Posted by ampburner on Nov-19-2002 14:55:

OR play what you like and have a good time, fuck the crowd!

Posted by sektile on Nov-19-2002 15:10:

truth is dude 90% of the people that age wont appreciate trance.. let alone hard trance

if your keen on playing to that age group, id drop some commercial tunes, and pray :P

for real!

who cares if they cant appreciate it? fact is, just because they have no taste, doesnt mean you cant spin some good music. think of all the times you've been subjected to enduring rap, hiphop, and top40... i think its time you turn the tide.

damn rap and hiphop. i could go on for 2 hours about how much i DESPISE those genres and just about everything they stand for... including the largely immoral and disrespectful lyrics, uncreative beats, lack of good moving breakdowns/buildups... *zips it* i wont go on.

so yea... dont feel like you have to back down just because you think some poor little kids might not appreciate your set... heaven help they have to hear something the radio doesnt play :P

bottom line about your set: your not getting paid for it, your not at a club trying to drive people to the bar, and it surely doesnt seem like you have a "reputation" to uphold by playing commercial junk. be a DJ, not a jukebox !!!!!

you should end with an ambient fade into floyd's track the wall part 2... teacher! leave them kids alone!

hell yeah man i agree be a DJ not a jukebox...but its all good they can deal with a little harder beats that are original and that have uplifting lyrics and not always "its about the cars(which they dont own) the diamonds (which they rent) and the women (they could never have)
im sick of that shit im tired of techno (generic name for electronica) being pushed down I think you should play some hard ass shit such ass Minimalistix and Cosmic Gate and so on and so forth but drop that needle and blow they're brains out and show them what a real DJ does and plus your not working with a rep so go for it

even if they had what they want...

the cars.. with the 20" wheels that bend on the first pothole and take $300 tires.. and look GHETTO
the diamonds and gold... which they steal from someone who earned them properly...
the women... with the oversized asses ugly faces and attitude problems...

that would be going EASY on these wiggers. i'd start with the track 'fucking society' (the CrO2 mix, of course) then bust into hardbeats like karim, bk, andy farley, od404, and chris c.... played +6 ... and finish the set off with 3 tracks of really really fast darkstep DnB

Posted by Gourhellyea on Nov-20-2002 04:15:

damn an 8th grade dj? you are crazy. anyways i would suggest that you promote the dance as a trance party. a lot of people will show up regardless because at that age dances are the coolest. it will be a good gimmick, and you will have the ticket to spin whatever you want. if i had a trance party when i middle school back in the day i would definitely go even if i didnt know what it was.

Posted by MERiDiAN5i2 on Nov-20-2002 04:25:

i think it's badass that people are learning to spin at an early age... i know i did alot of stuff when i was young, not music related, but still.. it's amazing what you can do at an early age when your still fresh and undistracted

Posted by mongeone on Nov-20-2002 05:18:

whats all this crap about palyign what you want thats not fucking fair. its an event for everone and you gotta play shit that everyone wants if they dont want trance then fkn shove it and put up!!! this is not your event this is not a club where punters have come and paid to see trance so if they dont want it who are you to say shut up and listen!!!!!

and there is some very good hiphop out there not all of it is abotu bitches money and power!!!! thats about as ignorant as someone saying they can learn to mix trance in 20minutes!!!

fuck i love trance but i aint gonna drop trance if i know the crowd loves hip hop or whatever.... and if i refuse to drop what they want out of respect for them i wont mix at all!!! personally i think you will find that they will learn to except it more if you play what they want and every couple of songs show them what your really about... and maybe drop some trance songs with funky breakdowns so they can still shake booty!!!!

but if you wanna mix trance tell the commity or whatever that on the posters or whatever they put upo around the school to let peopel knwo that trance will be spun!!! then you can tell em to fuck off because its written and they knew before they even came!!!

in teh end they all think its gonna eb teh night where they can get laid so they want some music where they can rub there boners against the girls leg!!!!

living it large respect other people!!!

Posted by Gourhellyea on Nov-20-2002 06:34:

hahahaha, unintentional comedy is off the charts!

Posted by Greedy on Nov-20-2002 08:06:

you have good intentions, but lil kids never like techno, let alone hard trance. Trance takes patience to enjoy and many lil kids lack that. Rap and pop is spoon fed to them thanks to mtv and the radio. You can try 9 pm, sandstorm, etc but these are club songs. These kids never been to a club and dont even know whats it like being in one. I doubt they will even recognize the most clubbiest or cheeziest tune.
Good luck though.

Posted by montie on Nov-20-2002 08:24:

7th and 8th graders are not gonna like trance. they have a hard enough time dancing to music they want to hear. if you spin trance for them they are gonna look around and not know what to do, then start bitching because they are too shy to dance to anything anyway.
i used to dj parties for 7th and 8th graders. it sucked.
save yourself the time and annoyance.

Posted by toxa on Nov-20-2002 21:46:

What everyone is discounting, is that for every top 40 track there is usually a trancey or clubby remix out. I mean I have run into the same problems as you guys have, but really look into these remixes. Someone like Thunderpuss does a lot of stuff with top 40. This way you are satisfied(because you can actually mix this stuff) and they are satisfied. My suggestion, check out a remix by drunkenmonkey(or something like that) of eminem's - "without me", it might be cheesy, but it really makes the hook of the song into a hard trance track. Check it out!!!!!

Posted by Acid John on Nov-20-2002 22:25:

Exclamation

no good. no good i tells ya!

all i really have is hard trance.

the most mainstream tune i have would be: norman bass-how you like bass (warp bros. rmx)

im thinkin that it may get people goin, but if not, i have nothing else to fall back on if they dislike whatever else i have.

Posted by annon185 on Nov-21-2002 07:13:

if i were u, i'd go with the mainstream radio tunes. that's how it'd go in dallas. appreciation for (good) trance music here is not that great. hell, PvD made his first appearance here about a month ago for crying out loud. anyways, if trance is that necessary, go with mainstream crap like dj sammy's heaven and days go by .of course, tastes in chicago could be a lot different than over here. the trance played here is CHEESE!!! trust me, when u hear castles in the sky mixed for the 2458724568248778th time, u'd go crazy too... but hey, that's just my two cents
