The Big Deal About James Holden

what is it with trancers and James Holden? I'm at a loss to why his productions are viewed as trance, and yet most progressive house gets passed as 'boring'?

Posted by robstar on Nov-21-2002 14:35:

i think its because some trancers feel dirty if they listen to progressive.

*yawn*
Putting every track in its own small labeled box is laughable.

Why do people want to classify every track they hear? More important, why do people argue about bs like this? Just enjoy it..

these are wise words !!! don't worry about the style and categorizing a tune or an artist.just enjoy the music

Who cares. James Holden produces quality stuff, whether you want to call it trance or progressive.

Posted by [mart] on Nov-21-2002 17:51:

Wasn't it previously decided that James Holden's style is 'pixie trance'?

i don't find it...

and yes, categorizing is stupid, it's all about good music and holden is great at what he does...

Posted by biznology on Nov-21-2002 19:03:

the big deal is that he makes good shit, and most trance fans can appreciate it.

the same way most prog heads CANT appreciate uplifting and most uplifters cant appreciate prog...those who are inbetween can see whats good about both, and like it...

and dont bother trying to label it cause no one knows what they are talking about|

Posted by vmc on Nov-21-2002 19:04:

I don't consider his stuff house, it's progressive I guess. Too little high hats for house (for example).

Posted by sektile on Nov-21-2002 19:15:

james holding fucking owns.

if you ask me, id label him 'progressive trance' - whatever it is labeled as its still ownage

Posted by capricorn15 on Nov-21-2002 19:56:

maybe becasue of his song horizons, that sounds like trance to me, but i like progressive too, so i dont really care

I have to agree with Basd on this one. As you may see in my profile I'm a huge admirer of the "stuff" James produces, but I never wondered for a minute what style it's supposed to be. Who cares? The only time it mattered was on Innercity 2001 cause they had to put him in a hall. They chose the "progressive hall" for him, but I would have listened to him if he was in the "Full of shit hall" (yeah, I know, it doesn't exist but it would be fun if they had one ) as well. As long as he remains the number one dj I'll always go where he goes, nomather how they call it.

I've always wondered what it is with house and the box-mentality. Just enjoy the music whatever it's called. Grtz Crazy K.C.

because theyre arrogant ****s and try to re-pigionhole music they like?

ive always thought holden as a prog house dj/producer. i dont knwo where the fuck the trance element comes from in some peoples minds...

James Holden - Nothing (returning 93 mix)

This is prog house with trancey elemnts, theres much much more of a trance structure to Holdens music than a lot of prog house producers.

Hes not trance but he wouldn't be out of place playing a longside trance djs
