Why so many disses Sony's MDRV700 DJ headphones??????

actually i have had mine for a little over 2 years and it still looks new and it has been plugged and unplugged so so many times into various headphones jacks and the sound quality of it sounds as good and clear as day one. the stucture of it for me is tough and it shows since it has been so many uses and abuse. i remember this one idiot i let him borrow my heapohes and i saw him abusing and twisting it on his set and it didn't do anything to the headphones. i love tis thing cause it looks better than the pioneers 1000 and the quality is top notch. your take?

Posted by Fresh on Nov-30-2002 16:15:

yea i've had these a while too and they have suprisingly not broken on me. Sound quality is still top notch

If you own (or have bought or are buying) the Sony MDR-V700DJ headphones, check the swivel joints every now and then. It's those thin, flimsy, brittle plastic covers on those joints that are prone to cracking after just a few months of use - and the only way to fix those cracks is to send the headphones back to Sony to replace the entire headband (you guessed it, the swivel covers are part of the headband assembly), at a cost of about $40 plus tax and shipping and a loss of use of the headphones for 3 to 4 weeks. (Sorry, DJ's, but those cracks are NOT covered at all by Sony's warranty - but then again, Sony's 1-year parts/90-day labor warranty covers only factory defects.)

Satan (eek!) The Sony MDR-V700DJ requires a dedicated headphone amp (despite what you think)!

I think I know why I thought the Sony MDR-V700DJ lacked really deep bass:

I was using the V700 only on a portable CD player - and a gutless Sony CD Walkman, at that - at the time that I had owned that 'phone! HAH! That's because the V700 is notorious for requiring a lot of headphone-output current capability just to get any real bass extension, due to its very low 24-ohm impedance rating. (The V900 and the 7509 suffer from the very same problem as the V700, as far as extracting usable deep-bass from portable players is concerned.) And on portables, I've actually heard better deep-bass extension from relatively high-impedance headphones than I did from any very-low-impedance headphones.

So, I'm concluding that the V700 is a poor choice for use with gutless portable players (despite its extremely high efficiency), not only due to the extremely high current requirement of that 'phone for it to produce any low bass whatsoever, but also because the built-in op-amp inside the average "long-battery-life" portable music player lacks anywhere near sufficient current-delivery capability to reproduce that oomph. As a result, the portable player's built-in op-amp will run out of current, and the resulting sound from the V700/portable-player combo will be hollow and lifeless. (Like, that boomy mid-bass hump will diminish - but what is happening to the rest of my bass, as well? ) The V700 really needs an amp in order to get the impact that those 'phones are famous (or notorious) for! (Likewise, most of the higher-end Sony headphones require an amp in order to sound their best, despite their extremely high efficiency.) And even with an amp, the rest of the sound from the V700 is mediocre.

Smiley DJ

I have the Pioneer HDJ1000 and the Sony 700,,, both are great head phones but I like the Pioneer better. I think they look pretty much the same,,, but the Pioneer looks way better (on me at least) and feels tighter IMO. I bought the Pioneer after letting everyone at my club night use my Sonys,,, only to realize that they were cracked on both sides So I decided to get the Pioneer to avoid another problem like this with the Sony in the future,,, I guess only time will tell if the Pioneer is as durable,,, but I think the bass sounds much nicer in the HDJ1000 ;-)

Whatever,,, they're almost the same,,, just don't let any fools use your Sony and u will be okay

Posted by 24K on Nov-30-2002 18:32:

ALSO....

I think it's cool that the Pioneer has a switch to turn the sound from Stereo to Mono,,, because you never know when that might need it ;-)

Actually I think they are - mine cracked on both sides, and I sent them in - the entire headband was replaced, for free. They were still under 1-year warranty.

As for your concern, Aldrian, ShadySlim pretty much answered it. The brittle quality of the plastic is to blame. I'm surprised that yours haven't cracked yet, but they will.

There are 3 certain things in life:

-Death
-Taxes
-Cracking V700's

Posted by ShadySlim on Nov-30-2002 23:18:

Yeah, but the fucking labour is covered for only 3 months. And Sony is notorious for charging so fucking much for labour.

Cool

I like the 700s a lot, but nothing seems to want to make me change from my MoS-IXOS 1001s

Posted by DJ LIQUID on Dec-01-2002 04:48:

Everyone always disses them because the tend to crack/break

almost every single dj i know who has had them has cracked them

thats one reason i bought Pioneer's...because they are for heavy duty dj use

Posted by Special_K on Dec-01-2002 05:44:

If you have sony 700's and the swivel joint starts to crack then all you need to o it get a clear zap strap and tighten it up around the joint.

I sent my headphones away to be fixed and it cost me 90 buxs, a year later they broke again and i just used a zap strap on them, works fine.

When I drop $100 on a pair of headphones, I god damn well expect them to last longer than a year like yours did. My old v700's lasted for just over a year despite immaculate care for them. Not to mention they start making my outer ear ache after more than 30 minutes of wearing them, and the leather ear cup thing will dry up and begin to crack. You might as well pay someone the $100 to fuck you in the ass with a broken broomstick

Haha that's jokes...

neways i need new headphones was gonna go with the sony ones but i need clear bass ;D so im thinking the pioneer HDJ-1000 or the technics 1210s (silver) they look sweet and i heard good things about those.

Posted by Hondaswaper on Dec-01-2002 18:41:

i like the Sony 600's because your whole ear fits inside the headphone cup (blocks out allmost all outside noises)

Posted by Djstigma on Dec-02-2002 00:20:

I have been using the Sony MDR-700 for over a year and is been very good to me, I would recommand it.

Posted by j@y on Dec-02-2002 03:39:

i have sony vr500
they are made the same way as the 700 but the ear part is smaller
they are tough but the sound isnt very good when the volume is high

ill probably buy 700's in a while

I'm glad that someone else likes Ministry of Sound IXOS DJ1001's.. They are great

I can't mix on anything else anymore.. Every time I play at my club, if someone offers me Senn's or Sony's, I just decline and plug my own phones in - otherwise I can't get a perfect beatmatch.

I think that once you get used to them, you don't go back.

So does a "HeadWize/Head-Fi" friend of mine - and an avid Etymotic ER-4S lover at that! Only problem for him is that the earpads are a bit too shallow.

The V700's are the best

the only problem is they are not studio headphones they are dj ones, so sony does not cover if they blow or what not. th v600's are studio phones so they have full warranty coverage. plus 600's dont output soo much bass like the 700s so you get a clearer sound. (better accuracy for beatmatching)

but you can also turn teh base down when mixing with the 700s to get the desired effect.. your mixer should have a bass control hehe

i still love the 700s i dont like how the 600s look

lol

Nope, the V600's have absolutely NO redeeming qualities at all whatsoever. They are dull and flat - but in a BAD, lifeless, extremely inaccurate way. And worse, their warranty is even WORSE than the warranty coverage for the V700DJ's - 90 days (3 months) total, replacement only.

All in all, the V600's are one fucked-up pair of headphones that are WAY overpriced for what they deliver. In fact, they are NOT true studio monitor headphones; they are merely glorified $20 low-end mass-market closed headphones.

Posted by MERiDiAN5i2 on Dec-02-2002 16:47:

i also find my V700's sound best when connected to a high current audio source. weaker devices dont drive them worth a damn... anything portable, forget it...

I'm glad my mixer has a good headphone amp built in..

Then why do portable audio makers rate their portables for extremely low-impedance (16-ohm) headphones, when even the 24-ohm, extremely-high-efficiency V700DJ's need lots of current just to deliver the slammin' bass that those DJ 'phones are notorious for?

In my experience, portables sound best with headphones that are rated between 32 and 80 ohms.

Posted by ShadySlim on Dec-02-2002 17:06:

Nrg2Nfinit,

If you want a TRUE studio-monitor Sony, don't get the V600's. Get the 7506's instead.

Posted by Nrg2Nfinit on Dec-03-2002 15:19:

HEhe i htink ill just stick to my 700s untill something bad happens

knock on wood that nothing does tho

Posted by MAB on Dec-08-2002 08:25:

ive had my 700's since they come out and i spent big $ to have them moved to Australia coz we never get anything here when it comes out without causing some pain, and mine haven't cracked so I must be lucky huh! i guess you don't spend all the money to treat your e-quip like krap tho
