Counter Strike Problem

i have a P3 733hz, 884mb Ram, 2x 40gig hard drives, Creative Geforce2, Microsoft expolorer Mouse, Windows XP Pro, Yet Counter Strike Still Runs laggy and shitty.. any tips?

is it your end? may also be your connection (even if it is broadband) or the servers where you play.

your system appears to be quite capable of running CS smoothly. tho...may i ask what res you run it at?

also XP is kinda gay when it comes to running a lot of games. especially those that were made pre-XP.

my res is High...

1280 X 1024

Uhg, I'd advise to turn the res. down to at the MOST 1024x768, 800x600 would probably run perfect but its not as pretty Your system cant run a res. that high.. my old 600mhz could hardly handle 800x600.. and considering how bad XP runs CS..

If you did try turning it down, well, fiddle with options going for performance over looks, and if all else fails.. reinstall HL/CS..

ah...there's your problem. drinkyourmilk has pretty much covered all the remedies.

also, if your comp was on for an extended amount of time, you can also restart it. that'll give a slight performance boost. i would suggest 800 x 600 for the smoothest gaming experience. not as pretty as 1024 x 768, but less choppiness is always first priority.

also, run the game on openGL if you can, and not direct3D. direct3D is a lot more demanding than openGL.

oh and tone down the decal limit to around 200 from 300, that'll also give a slight boost. and you can always tone down the quality of your smoke grenades. they lag up ppl with lower-end vidcards like a m0f0.

final advice. play in servers that have less ppl unless you like big games...(less ppl = less animations, bandwidth, etc) and smallers maps like dust, iceworld, etc (less textures on screen).

well i just installed it again... Im going to try what you guys have said...

thanx alot guys

BTW since youve got a creative geforce grafx card i S T R O N G L Y recommend that you run it in OpenGL since, when run on Direct3d the entire game gets slowed down if more than a third of your screen is covered with sprites (smoke, explosions, etc.) i had this problem with my 2.2Ghz Intel P4 with a 128 mb Nvidia geforce 3 card, i switched to OpenGL and i never saw it again!

yeah, i don't think hl will run decent on d3d for a long while

also, maybe give the new detonators a whirl (just make sure to uninstall the current ones properly)

there's a 40.72 whql dets, and a 41.09 betas available from nvidia

went from ~9900 3dmarks to ~10800...not even close to the claimed 25%, but i did notice an improvement when running 8x anisotropic & 2x fsaa 'cos the old 30.82 dets used to drop fps when awping on aztec, but now it doesn't even flinch

Posted by Linx_da_cat on Dec-06-2002 14:10:

yeah i totally forgot about 40.72. been using 3 for the longest time but haven't had any probz. gf4 will do that

Posted by netw3rkd on Dec-08-2002 09:45:

The prob is your video card and the high res.

Best solution is to remove Counter-strike and play something better

oi STFU
D3D sucks for CS - I used it by mistake for half a map and was getting 25-30fps max

switch to OpenGL and bingo, 100fps all the way

Posted by Fraggle on Dec-12-2002 13:54:

hehehe...u'd have to be an idiot to choose d3d over opengl in any 3d application/program

i can't tell much difference in quality (i expect there must be some tho), but in terms of fps opengl craps to hell over d3d...and seems to be a lot less fussy about fsaa and other things too

Is there any way to raise the reso, but keep the text the size it is at 800x600? thats the only reason I keep my reso there, so i can read shit =P.
