Arranging your records
As my record collection grows, I am having more and more trouble looking for specific records I wanna spin. I was wondering how you guys arrange your records. Alphabetically? or some other way?
hmmm, i usually have a bunch of my records in one box next to my home setup...
i arrange them by style (trance, hard trance, techno, etc). i never really thought about it much but i dont usually have problems finding a certain record. if i am spinning a particular style then i know the tune im looking for will be in the same category in the box
i dont arrange mine... i pretty much know where too look for a record i wanna play...
yea by style.
DVS - can I have the tracklisting for your techno mix? Those tracks are fucking sick!
I spin 2 different genres...progressive house (for my lounge gigs) and trance (for my club gigs). I have the 2 separated in my crate. But I have "sections" for my progressive house
I have a section with percussion intros, a section for melodic intros, and one for filler/tribal/overlay tracks. The outgoing songs outro will determine which section I pull from. I have cardboard cutouts dividing the sections, nobody sees them when I play live, I wouldn't care if they did anyway, its just easier for me to have this kind of organization. I guess I kind of have my trance subdivided as well. Some of my cheese (the slower stuff) is in the front of the trance section, and the heavier/faster stuff is near the rear of my crate. Its all personal preference. I'm pretty damn anal so I prefer my crate to have some kind of organization.

I arrange they in how new they are, that way I know where my newest vinyls are. They may be arranged in groups(styles. like 5 new techno tracks and then 5 new hardtrance tracks
i sort mine by label, then by energy
i play hard house
and basically, i can sort my labels by energy, cause usually i buy similar tracks from the same label
so it's not so energeic labels near the front, then as you get towards the back it's gets harder and harder
and then my hard trance fills the back of my case
i also organize mine by category - progressive, trance, and psytrance/goa crates, with newer records usually towards the front. works well for me.
style/genre
Basically like everyone said the easiest way is to put all your tracks with less energy at begenning and the ones with most energy at the back and group them by genre obviously ;D
yeah do what everyone else said but something i discovered recently that has helped alot is if you find two tunes mix REALLY well together put them together (keep them next to each other) it serves as a great reminder and possible direction to where your set is going...
Just by the various sub/sub-sub-genres. So all the uplifting together, all the acid together, all the darker stuff together. Then with the labels where i have lots of records, eg, pulse, tracid, etc, I have them all together as well.
I have my newest A pile = 50 records
not so new B pile = 50 records.
When I get a new record and put it in A then I also take 1 out.
Also 2000 - 2002 back catolgue
600BC- 1999 and classics
And the box full of the shit that I never mix.
I have my breakbeat in alphab. order, no need to BPM order them because I know the generally BPM of all my records....

i used to organize mine newest in front and oldest in the back but then i decided to organize them in diffent sections depening on style then energy within each substyle. but its something i've just tried out rescently so i'm still getting used to it =)
I pretty much arrange my records by the artist and some by the labels,,, and the ones I'm playing are at the front ;-) usually take around 70 records to the club I play at that about covers it
Currently the records and CDs, both in my collection at home, and when I take out a selection, are in no order what so ever. I havent had any really huge problems finding anything, though it is very annoying when you just cant find that tune you really have to play next. However, I have a Database Ive made of every Vinyl, CD and incidentally MP3 that I own and keep meaning to put them in some sort of organisational structure using this. The thing is Im still unsure as to the best method. I think for the home collection Ill sort alphabetically by Record Label, and in my box by style. Though Im still open to suggestions.
I have about 160 records that are all trance. I put them in alphabetical order, I did this because I can never remember where I put my records, and when im stoned im totally lost!!!
