"England and Wales have the highest crime rate among the world's leading economies, according to a new report by the United Nations."

What about america? - and i know where i would feel safer. I went to New York for 5 days last year, and in the time i was there, many were murdered - including a few streets down where about 6 drug dealers were shot, execution style, by a rival gang.

I know someone who went to Cape Town, he got a knife pulled on him in the street in front of loads of people (who didnt do anything). He got hundreds of pounds of his stuff nicked, and he has a picture of what looks like a mad monkey sneaking up on him (he didnt see this monkey until the pictures were developed).

From looking at that page and the statisticis it seems they treat murder the same as shoplifting. But there are something like 7x more murders per 100,000 in american than here.

Oliver Letwin says some stuff, but he's some tory twat. All those tory's are twats and hypocrits - one of them whos high up used to be my doctor, and he used to perve after his patients.

The UN reports also shows that England and Wales are the second-worst places in the world for assaults, with 851 people assaulted per 100,000, and seventh for burglaries and car theft, with 1,579 burglaries per 100,000 population.

When someone attacks you here they use a knife or a bat or something - so you dont die and it stays as an assault. In other countries - they use a gun and it kills you, which is why america has 7X the murder rate of here, i guess.

This article is really weird. South Africa and Russia are leading economies? It talks about the world's 20 largest nations... my country is the 5th or 6th largest nation and the 10th largest economy, and I don't think England could be worse than here. But once again, I'm not quite sure whether we're a "leading economy"

Maaz - that article is written that way because it's in the Daily Telegraph - which is a conservative newspaper. The Conservatives are the opposition party, the party in government is Labour. The Daily Telegraph are just trying to make the government look bad.

Of the national british newspapers

The Times & The Telegraph - Broadsheet - Conservative
The Sun, The Mail - Tabloid - Conservative
The Mirror - Tabloid - Labour
The Guardian & The Independant - Broadsheet - No Party

It all makes sense now, thanks But I thought they couldn't write it without anything to prove it

Well in this case they havent lied - just used the statistics in a certain way. By their method you would say someone who has shoplifted 10 times is worse than someone who has murdered 9 people.

If you take a look at American news programs - in the summer 2001 (before the New York attacks) they had nothing to report on (nothing that directly effected their inward looking country anyway) - so they made up some shit story about 'the summer of sharks', and despite all the experts saying that shark attacks that year were no more than any other year they still reported every attack and made out that sharks were on some mad murderous rampage.

In the same way, a couple of years before that they also had nothing to report of significance to them (the effect their crippling sanctions were having on Iraq wouldnt have made fun tv) - so they went into a mad frenzy about 'Britains unsafe streets'. In the typical American hysterical, over exaggerated style of reporting they had video clips and UK correspondents talking about how unsafe Britain was. They used a statistic that said that there were marginally more assaults per 1,000 people in the UK than in the US. They of course neglected to mention that 7 times more people per 1,000 are murdered in America. What they said wasnt lying as such - they never made up statistics, they just misled people and left parts of the truth out.

Article along a similar line (very good read): http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/s...,814967,00.html
