PHWOOOOOOOOAAAR!!!!!

what an event!!

the set up in the airdawndagger arena was spectacular to say the least - that warehouse was HUGE!! managed to catch the first 1 and a half hours of sashas set before being dragged off to see dj hype. He started his set off pretty slowly with some breaks, but gradually built it up - too bad for those who walked out after the first few songs through boredom. Came back to see the last 45 minutes of his set - to cap off a great day, so it was abit of a bummer when they shut everything down at 10 instead of the supposed finishing time of 10.30
i was told it was becos someone set off a fire alarm in the airdawndagger arena, but i dunno, sounds abit iffy to me

but anyways i still had heapsa fun - spent my time pretty evenly amongst the arenas. The sound systems could have been louder in all the rooms, but i guess thats cos of the sound restrictions with the council.

the afterparty at metros seemed abit dull in comparison - bit of a scam charging everyone $5 when they'd advertised all along that there was free entry for those who went to sci fi. Oh and did anyone manage to find the 3 rides they said would be there? or was that more lies....

wow what a day

had I not been so fucking sick I would've absolutely cained it

What a venue! I've said for a while the pavillions @ Claremont would make awesome 'Warehouse' type venues for an event, and I was right. Mixed with the outdoor arenas, the venue worked a treat imo. Walking into the Airdrawndagger Arena for the first time yesterday was breathtaking. That is the best setup I have ever seen. The tech room was awesome aswell with the visual displays working a treat. Felt the dnb & sublime arena's were a bit light and the roof could've done with a bit of covering up, just to make it that little darker. Although it did make for a good 'early morning' type feel.

Tried to check out most of the acts as possible, but was primarily based in the prog arena.

Was most impressed with Goldtrix's set, cheezey at times but always full of energy, and who could forget the 'Bah Bah Bah' recital he did thru almost every song. His mixing was a bit off in places, but still managed to come thru with an impressive set.

I had reservations over GT, but after hearing him last night my opinion of him has changed, for the better. With a double dose of progressive house & techno, GT was pretty impressive and didn't disapoint.

Infusion live were my highlight of the afternoon/night. These 3 guys from Sydney are fucking amazing! These guys can make any stupid sound, sound awesome! Their glitchy noises, matched with pounding beats and the distorted vocals, as well as their willingness to pump up the crowd at the same time made for a visual & aural feast. Their last half hour was the absolute bomb! And finishing off with their rendition of "Great Southern Land" will be etched in my memory forever. Then came The Piano Man...

I was front & center for the man called Sasha and he was amazing, nothing like his previous sets in Australia, this was a real fuckin big crowd set. Starting off with cruisy atmospheric breaks, I think the lay-man checking out Sasha for the first time got a bit bored of it and I noticed the crowd seemed to thin out a bit. About 20min in he started the 4/4 action. Dropping some banging progressive house, as he approached the mid-part of the set Sasha he was dropping some techno type tunes. The crowd was amped the whole way through but his last 20min lifted the crowd to another level. It was back to Northern Exposure as he dropped some of the best progressive trance I have ever heard. Verging on cheeze, but still fucking awesome. The crowd just lifted! It was a shame the event had to close early, and despite the crowds attempts for an encore, we were unfortunately disapointed

Not your average progressive Sasha set, but a Sasha experience nonetheless. This man doesn't just play tunes, he plays beautiful music, and is prepared to take you on a journey with him.

Was good to meetup with Jah & his crew.

Wow what a day

bah bah bah

what he said

haha yeah na it was a good event i enjoyed it, i was really tired the whole day i think because i woke up so early in anticipation! but as soon as derrick may came on i was good man i have never danced so hard or with such passion that man ROCKED... just as i suspected.

i walked into the big arena (sasha airdrawdaggerarena) for the first time, i almost had a heart attack it was huge! seriously i mean like my heart exploded through my mouth!, this was one bad mother****** of a arena guys, i mean fucking huge! and they had these mad circle visual projector things in the backgrounds they were the shit!, anyway chad d was warming up what seemed to be not that large a crowd but when one takes into account the sheer size of that place it was pretty fucking good!, unfortountaly i missed out on eddie amadour - psycho ex girlfriend which i had HAMMERED to my friends in the car for seriously like an hour driving up... i didnt know it would be played or anything and i reckon they thought the song was really shit before but then there like "yeah jigs that songs pretty good when you hear it live man, you just missed it" i was like arrghhH!

the first international act i saw was 'goldtrix' i dunno much about him ive just heard the name so i thought id check it out, he set was pretty damn good i was well impressed he dropped this REALLY classic oldschool anthem but it must have been a newer remix or something but i am 100% sure i have heard it somewhere in like a documentary going on about the origins of dance culture i think it was adamski - NRG from memory but dont quote me , another bit of a crowd pleaser was dj falcon and thomas bangalter - i got so much love to give... the massive ibiza tune from this year, but it was so unexpected it didnt fit with goldtrixs set at all, i dont even think he attempted to mix it just faded it in and out, but i have alot of respect for him for doing something like that especially at a big event...

mmm then i was just getting anxious to see derrick and wasnt that intrested in the other acts... we (well i) rested for a while outside and met up with our other mates and then headed of to the drum and bass room at about 5 to prepare for the onslaught (you see cause 6 o clock is where it was at for me samuel l sessions then followed by derrick may! i was like hell yeah!) so anyway we bummed around in the drum and bass room which mostly involved of me shaking my head at the poor misguided youth of perth, i felt like running up to the mc grabbing his microphone and directing there sorry asses to the techno room.

but anyway 6 o clock came round and i was at samuel l sessions time but most of my mates were in the big arena at infusion and i have to say it was infusion who stole the show... i was at the start of infusion (3 guys doin there thing, live amazing stuff))but then ran over to samuel l sessions, he was THE shit i was SO impressed he was alot harder than what i was expecting but he brought a really energetic set to the entire (at this time pretty sparse room) and really got everyone going for may... about half way through i ran over to the infusion boys (they pulled me away they were that good!) and WOW i stayed there for the rest of the time they played. these guys were AMAZING they just worked it so hard, one of there dudes was no shit jumping up and down on the spot, REALLY getting into it for like the full two hours! haha he should get a medal just for that! i was getting tired just looking at him!, they had the whole arena going nuts they did a GREAT job really worth catching if they come around again guys make sure you dont miss out they were THE SHIT, everyone in that room was really loving it!. i had made sure to catch the end of them cause straight after them sasha started...(there ending track great southern land remix, omg.) i wanted to see the start of sasha cause he started some 20 mins before derrick may... but about 5 minutes into sasha (Sorry bedrock!) i said fuck this and went to see the man i had waited for forever!.

i ran over! and low and behold he was setting up and i ran over to the bar and strapped myself in for a magical 2 hours and fuck did he deliver. i have never seen so many perth djs in one place just going nuts... that must have said something. derrick worked that mixer like i have never seen man, he was ALWAYS doing something it was so amazing, he moved like lighning over that fader and just really took everyone somewhere in his set you know he built it, he dropped this amazing tune the baddest bassline ive heard in ages and i remember it was so good samuel l sessions ran up to the deck look at the record name! and i saw derrick saying "louie vega" to him so it must be a new louie vega promo or something but fuck that rocked!, but yeah all ina ll it just was the shit. (between 7:50 and 10 anyway ) my only concern is they shut him down early... same with the guys in the other arenas too... weird! everyone was shouting one more but derrick reckoned the power was cut... pitty me and my mate saw the tables still spinning around

edit: must have been a pretty good event on the whole if me and bedrock were on two completely seperate areas and had a great time... for the main bit anyway , and the drum and bass and hip hop rooms were by no means shabby either (dj hype and dj shadow) if you were into that that was the place!

Posted by radicool on Dec-09-2002 07:18:

Damn...I was the only one dissappointed then...

The whole event was OK...but the best thing about this year's sci-fi is THE GIRLSSSS MATTEEE...I have never seen better girls running around in their skimpy tops and super-low jeans or mini skirt...WOWWWW I personally think that the girls are heaps better than the Gatecrasher last year...

mmmmmmmm.....girlssss....

I was kinda moving here and there between the Sublime arena and the Sasha's...Jumping Jack and Nick Fish was quite good, as they managed to make me jump around for a while, they were playing some dead cool hard trance tunes like cafe del marco V, the new JamX & DeLeon tunes and Answer the Question....but when Nick Sentience came on stage...now this is what you call hard house at it's finest people.. especially when he spun that 'ASCENSION' tunes that he made with BK, and not forgetting when BK's actual blockbuster 'REVOLUTION'
FUCKING WOWWWW...

Now....my night are starting to get worse....

After a while...I moved down to the Sasha's arena...and boy was I pissed off when I heard the last 30 minutes of this INFUSION. Why wasn't I came down earlier..?? I mean..this couple FUCKIN ROCKS.. To be honest I never heard very much of Infusion, but now i fucken know. Their tunes are sooo cool, with fucky bass, some riff every now and then.

The Sasha came along....hahahaha..I mean..apart from his master skill at mixing...the boy didn't even interact with the crowd, he just kept his head down all the time and pretended to be super cool. I don't really like the kind of music he plays anyway, but I have to admit that the guy KNOWS how to mix, perfect mixing. I was dissapointed by him, I mean, the whole point of rave is that you get to interact with the DJ. Remind me a bit of PvD the last time he came down to Perth. I mean look at Tiesto, Armin, and even INFUSION. They interact well with the crowd and that's what Sasha should think about the next time he came down here.

...And there dicks dressed in blue stop everything at 10...I heard the fire alarm but I thought that was a part of the tunes that Sasha plays...anyway...not knowing what exactly happen and seeing everyone left, we just went home...

Lucky I managed to bought the industry tix, cos If I paid $88 for that kind of rave...boy I would be upset..

The highlight of the night for me....is seeing Nick Sentience, and the last 30 minutes of Infusion. I wish I saw Infusion for the whole 100 minutes....

Posted by Bedrock on Dec-09-2002 07:40:

yeah I have to say Sasha's interaction was a downer, but it was probably due to him being so smashed or whatever, he definitely was getting into the music, but you could tell he was disapointed so many people left after and during his first part of his set

Posted by ascension on Dec-09-2002 08:35:

i guess alotta people woulda been abit shocked with the tempo of the start of sashas set - when u consider how infusion finished their set off. Im glad i stayed on tho, and for those who left, cheers for letting me get closer to the front

i had a listen to nick sentience too, was pretty suprised at how empty that room was cosidering what a big name he is in the hard dance scene - i prolly woulda seen u bopping around radicool cos of how empty the room was, what were u wearing??

i liked the giant planets on the roof in the airdawndagger arena... very trippy
and the dancing girl silhouettes

Posted by Bedrock on Dec-09-2002 08:50:

I tripped out after turning around and seeing about 20 people with sparklers going off behind me during Sasha's set

but that was some good lights/decor/visuals hey

I ended up having to put my sunnies back on, the lights were making my headache worse

my retina still hurts from the mad day glow clothing...

Hi guys, I met Infusion while I was hangin out in the city today, say hi to them and ask them when they're gonna release their songs.

About the sci-fi, the most impressive DJ for me was GT,Sasha and Infusion, they're wicked, cool songs. Although Sasha spinned a break in the beginning, I dont care, thats what I like his style, play his own style, different from others. Goltrix was alright, the guy a bit weird tho.

Anyone know the last song from GT, nice tune. Anyway the rave is pretty good. Good music especially in the Sasha'Airdrawndagger Arena.

Posted by Jah on Dec-09-2002 11:42:

it was
GT - this is not a love song
i got the mp3 somewhere...

I was wearing orange reebok singlet and denim 3/4 pants with silver reebok sneakers...I was sort of in the middle between the back wall and nick himself...

yeah i know hey...it was like only 70-80 people tops when he played, i was quite surprised myself actually...but perhaps people don't like hard house too much over here, seeing that i doubt that we will be able to persuade another hard house DJ over to perth (damn...I was hoping to see BK and Andy Farley someday in Perth)

I was hoping that they sell those corn cobbet and hotdog-on-a-stick as the food, but it was only the crappy chicken roll and chips ala chicken treat

Posted by radicool on Dec-09-2002 17:23:

...took my pills way to early inside the sublime arena...and it was quite good actually but the 'high' was too quick...pink panther it was...anyone had them before..??

...lucky i still had some blue dexxies left from godskitchen..and boy it was good hey during the last 30 mins of infusion and the sasha..sitting down in the dark feeling the bass pumpin thru' my brain and heart...and watching chick pass by...i jumped like 10 metres when i realised there is a mid-size fucken spider crawling inside my singlet..(I am a bit arachnophobic you see.. )
