HappyHappy REVIEW: MARIO PIU at arc

WOW!!! just got home from nyc, i had a REALLY GREAT time!!!

shout out to all TAs that made it out last night: tatgirl, drizzt81, trancer, pyro, enigmat, butterfly, lunasea? (are you the one we went to breakfast with? if so, nice to meet you, glad you got to meet up with us at breakfast, and i look forward to partying with you again!)

Noel Sanger was a little bit of a sleeper. good tunes, just couldn't really dance to them. two notable tracks he played were:

conjure one-tears from the moon
....-.... (shoot, nathalie asked him the name of the track, he told her, she told me, i forgot...)

there weren't too many people at the club, and everyone was kinda standing around during sanger's set.

Mario Piu takes command around 4. i've never seen him before or heard any of his live sets, not sure exactly what to expect.

i loved how his set progressed, with lots of new BxR tracks, a lot of cd-r's, and many killer tracks. although the club wasn't packed, the energy that mario created was amazing. so many people were dancing and having a really great time.

since nathalie was up in the booth with mario taking pictures, video taping, etc. she has a lot more of the tracks he dropped. the ones that i could id:

taub 2002
joy don't stop
ira
argh...why is my memory failing me now? 3 hrs sleep? 4.5 hr drive? ok, alex, john, greg, tom, nathalie, please help. i'll fill in more if i can remember.

i was dancing so hard at the end, completely lost myself in the pounding tunes. legs and feet now killing, but well worth it! anyone who didn't come out last night missed a whole lot of fun. next time, next time...

special thanks to: nathalie (need i explain why?), caroline (please come out with us more, your positive energy and attitude is infecting!), and greg for his wonderful hospitality (letting 3 girls take over his apartment for the night), i can't thank you three enough! oh yes, and mario...

it was pretty cool, after the club the TAs got to treat Mario to breakfast in the village. we took a few pics at breakfast and afterwards, check mario's web site in the future to see them!

overall, one of the best weekends ever had in NYC, thanks everyone!

sorry i missed out...next time

Posted by butterfly on Dec-09-2002 01:41:

yeah i had a fairly decent night. i haven't laughed that hard in a while. it was a very thin crowd and none of the regulars (except me and my crew) were there but i didn't care. we got there and i was really feeling sanger's set. piu came on and i was pleasantly surprised. the reviews i read of his recent set at GC were horrible so i expected little from him. i thought his set was solid and enrgetic. i didn't know it would be so trancy, though it was good trance so i was pretty happy with it. was that 2 electro tracks he threw down towards the end? i lost myself dancing for a few minutes there. i checked out the arcade for a while to for native theory, i believe, and they were sounding great too.

all in all it was a great night musically and it had a nice vibe. i met some new ppl and saw a few i haven't seen in a while. glad i went. i think i am going to have to skip zabiela next week but hoepfully some of you will make it to howells the 21st.

The Real Review

I arrived at arc around 3 am to see about 30 or 40 people in the club. This was probably due to the fact that it was FREEZING outside. Noal Sanger through down a great progressive set to warm up for Piu. At 4:15 Piu gets on the Decks. He opens with some energetic progressive tracks. About 2 tracks into it me messed up the mixing of a track But besides that his set was FLAWLESS I am not great with Id's either but just to mention it for tom he played a track called Magic Impulse. Fucking awsome!!!!!! and then Taub !!!!! He stayed on until 6:30

Piu you did a great job man

Well at this point me and tom were getting ready to leave and go to gregs house. On my way out I see my good freind Daniela at the door of Arc. She trys to get into Arc to apoligize to Piu for missing his set (she knows him personally) Well they said no, but on our way over to gregs we get a call from greg saying that him caryn and Natalie are going to a Cafe' with Mario. Holy Shit well the 3 of us rush our asses over there to meet with them.

Mario since I know your going to be reading this I want to thank you for being suck a cool guy and hanging with us after arc. Your set really made me see what an awsome dj you are. I wish you the best luck and hope to see you back in Ny real soon.

Natalie,Melisa greg, caryn,Alex and Natelies young looking friend I had a great time with you guys. For such a small crowd we really brought the vibe up in that place.

ps. Greg thanks for letting us relax at your apartment. We couldnt walk after that set. MARIO killed me

Dammit, im a really big Mario Piu fan i wish more people would turn out to events like this. He really kicks ass. Unicorn, and Techno harmony is mario at his best!

Hopefully he comes to Toronto and there is a huge turnout

Thanx to Tatgirl for making Mario leave a message on my cell phone.

I was a little hung over when i finally heard it and all i hear i a guy speaking proper italian giving his "saluti" & wishing a merry christmas. skiped back to the begining as realized it was Mario Piu! very cool. Just then the alcohol headache faded..........for 5 seconds so i slept for a few more hours.

Hi to Caryn as well and all those that hit the party with Caryn and Natalie! Good to know some people got to enjoy Mario. Deserves MUCH more credit!

First off, Piu played a gr8 set; was nice seein John, Tom, Caryn, Greg, and Melissa again, Nathalie and Caroline was nice meetin u and hope u enjoyed NYC and will come back again for next big event.
Piu played some gr8 BXR tracks - know that thanks to the mirror that Arc DJ booth has ,
Megamind - Taub 2002, Dariush - IRA - this one sounded like he took original and pitched it up like crazy.
I had a gr8 time and hope to see many of the TAs at Armin on Friday and happy holidays everyone!

Glad you guys had a good time, though it may not have been the most top notch in your books =P. The DC crowd had a great time with Ferry though.

I haven't been up to NY at all yet. I'll have to check it out sometime, and meet all of you NY TA =P.

Btw Greg, good job with the 3 girls in the apartment thing

Monkey Dancer 2 mission accomplished

**I stayed up til 4am writing this review when I shoulda been in bed, only to have my internet connection go down 1 minute before I hit the 'post reply' button. Grrrrrr!!!! **

My friend Caroline & I left Toronto Fri nite, and spent the nite at Caryn's. Then the 3 of us continued to the city Sat. morning. Went to Greg's, set up camp, & hit the town. Called up my posse of friends and made meeting arrangements. For 24 hrs in the city, we sure did a lot, and had a lot of fun.

We arrived with Mario to the club, and it was pretty empty. Apparently, the nite before was slow for Tenaglia as well (this weekend is bad all around- the lowest movie attendance weekend this year, pre-final exams, pre- Christmas, etc...). Noel Sanger was playing some pretty sweet tunes. I think that 2nd track was Strike- Shelter Me (or something like that).

Piu went on at 4am, and hardly anyone left the club, which was a good thing. That guy dressed as a bottle of Smirnoff Ice did leave tho- I only wish he'd left sooner. He scared me. A lot. I am going to have nightmares for years about him, and I will never drink another Smirnoff Ice again. Ummm, ok- back to the party....

I was in the booth w/Mario the whole time- I wanted to know when the new BXR tracks were being dropped, so I had to trainspot all nite. Sorry I didn't get to come dance with u guys. As for the 'flubs' at the beginning of his set- Mario had never worked with the Phazon mixer they had, and it was a difficult one to work with (now, I am no DJ, but I looked at it & thought 'how the hell are u supposed to use that?'), and after the 2nd 'incident', he turned to me and said "that song is shit to mix". LOL. I was recording some on my camcorder, till we realized the microphone in my camera was causing feedback on the monitors, so I had to stop that.

He started off slowly, and then picked up the pace. He threw down a variety of new BXR releases, and several Bonzai tunes. Like an asshole, I forgot a pen and paper, and I dared not leave the booth to get some & get locked out. My memory is shit, so I only remember a few tunes. Aside from the ones mentioned above, he dropped a remix of "Love Game", Pagano- (You better not) Return to Me (Kitikonti mix), Sandro Vibot- 96 Street, Piu-Invaders, Paolo Peroni- Trip on the Moon, Marikit- And You? (< this is the electro track u were talking about, Butterfly- a new track by Mario & Joy Kitikonti), Piu- Believe Me, & a track by Ricky Fordis/Forbis (?) that was really cool.

The crowd went nuts for his set. The energy definitely picked up in the room, with plenty of cheers, clapping, and many hands reaching over the DJ booth to shake his hand. The love was in the room....

ARC needs a new lighting guy. Too many times the room was pitch black for nearly 30 seconds at a time. Without warning, ARC turned on the house lights at 6am, when he was expecting to play til 7.

We decided to take Mario out to eat- a buncha TA's & Danielle (from trance.nu, and our 'Italian translator') joined us at a cafe in the East Village for breakfast. Dropped him off at his hotel, and then back to Greg's for a nap before hitting the road.

Thanks to:
-ARC for bringing Mario to NY
-all the TA's who showed up to support
-Greg for putting us up (the booze is on it's way- remind Caryn)
-Caroline for coming along on another 'BXR roadtrip'
-Mario for the great set, and for bring a super cool guy despite the language barrier
and lastly....
-Caryn for putting us up Fri. nite, for the pink eye , supplying great tunes for the ride, for driving to the city & getting us back without flushing your keys down the toilet. LOL!

Why do TA's ALWAYS post comments about another DJ's event (even if it was in another city entirely) in a thread just cuz it happened on the same nite?? Glad u had fun at Ferry, but we're not going into the Ferry review thread to talk about Mario or about Deep Dish in Toronto, etc... just cuz it also happened Sat..

On 2nd thought- don't answer that one. Just think about it.

thx for the track ID.
i kinda like they way they do the lighting there. arc is meant to be a dark and dirty sort of club. they only recently started bringing trance there so maybe there is a clash with the music.

I think it would of been better if you quoted amit's post instead of Caryn's.

ahhh! i knew i was forgetting something. yes, the smirnoff ice man (or woman???) was sooo scary!!! i was so glad he left after a bit. maybe the tunes were to energetic for his slow walk and hand movements.

thank you nathalie for posted the tracks, i know you told me but my memory fails me at times.

oh yes, i forgot to bash the lighting guy. we've had discussions on this before, but they really need to hire a new guy. someone who knows what they are doing. good lights would make the venue so much better.

Also-
thanks go to pyro264jb entertaining me with all the mispronunciations over breakfast , and to Vince for his entertaining phone messages which accused me of having some random Italian guy off the street call & leave him a message on his machine, pretending to be Mario Piu. LOL!!! It was the real deal- save your message.

Posted by tatgirl on Dec-09-2002 14:28:

He also played another new unreleased song of his with the word "western" in the title.

i was so confused when i got that message, i was still shitfaced and tired from the night before. I wish i had money so i could say fuck to school and party every week .

Dont worry Nat the message is saved. I thought it was my Mafia hitman trying to tell me some important info......

I would see a Piu show over Ferry anyday! Dont bash Mario! thats all ive been reading on message boards and its starting to piss me off.

very under-rated
