Where Do I Start?
Couldnt find a thread on beginning your own tracks. Can someone help me out with recommending a computer program to play with or equipment, etc?
Start out with some crappy eJay-program (drag & drop style) or Fruity Loops. Perfect for n00bs. Then when u know the basic stuff u can start mixing in reason & other more advanced programs
Depends what kind of person you are... I couldn't deal with eJay and never used it except the first time I tried it out. I hated not being able to make my own sounds.
I started using Buzz (http://www.buzzmachines.com) several months ago and, although it took a LONG time to be able to start doing what I wanted on it, it works perfectly for what I want right now. In a couple more months I will spring for a hardware synth (probably a Virus), but in the meantime I am learning a lot about how to make a song flow the way I want, a lot about mastering, and also a fair amount about synthesizers (though I wish I could find some good reading material about this).
I've never tried Fruity Loops or Reason, though I have heard good things about both. But Buzz is free and does what I want. I don't have the money for Fruity Loops or Reason, and I'd rather use freeware if I can than pirate software.

I started with Magix years ago (I know, it's crap) and I also tried EJay. Both suck, but it helped me a lot in developing my production skills. Now I use FruityLoops ONLY. It's all I need. |
Right!
but the sound quality sucks

| [i][b] i've learned alot by practising myself, so i'd say, don't give up doing that! people easily give up on fruityloops and move to reason because of that. according to me they're just lazy to try enough with fruity Fruity is a really user-friendly interface, you won't find much programs that handle with such ease. the 3xosc is also way underestimated. i've used them for many main leads, simply by tweaking and placing effects on them. and they can be handled incredibly easy in the piano roll. |

You are obviously going to get more FX, synths, and samples off the net, right?..it will give you more sounds to use and play around with. listen to heart & soul by lightworks (yes, the lightworks from this forum).
