Hello! Gluegun Headphones ????????'s

Since your the resident headphones expert. I narrowed down my choices to the following:

TECHNICS RP-DJ-1200A
PIONEER HDJ-1000
PIONEER SE-DJ5000

I can't seem to make a decision, which do you recommend buying out of these.

Posted by JohnSmith on Dec-09-2002 23:12:

if i am not mistaken, gluegun reccomends none of those, but instead the Sennheiser HD280s.

i plan on getting a pair of those.

I hate the senn 280 pros

Posted by JohnSmith on Dec-10-2002 03:14:

really? care to elaborate on why? i am considering buying some, they have been highly reccomended by everyone, what do you hate about them?

Posted by 24K on Dec-10-2002 08:25:

I've got the Pioneer HDJ1000,,, I'd say go with those =)

Posted by Gluegun on Dec-10-2002 08:37:

I dont know much about the Pioneers.. No one at head-fi or headwize seems to have tried them. You are going to use these for loud club style environments, I assume? the Technics are tried and true at that...

Posted by trintiy on Dec-10-2002 10:56:

Gluegun, yes they are for club use. The Pioneers had a nice over feel and a really clean well balanced sound, not overly bass driven like a certin silver Sony product. They were a bit chunkier than I would like but, seeing as they are a pretty new headphone I thought I'd ask an expert before I invested that kind of money on them.

Thanks again for the help.

P.S on the Senn 280s, they sounded great, but I didn't like the way they fit. Sounds weird I know but, the were not a comfortable feel for me.

Posted by HyPeRSoNiC on Dec-10-2002 11:10:

I would go for the Technics....
I heard that they're top!!!
but right now I'm very satisfied from my Sony MDR-V700's

Posted by Gluegun on Dec-10-2002 13:44:

Perhaps you couold get the better Pioneers, the Technics, do an in-depth comparison for us, then return the inferior product?

Posted by JohnSmith on Dec-10-2002 14:47:

sorry, i guess i put words in your mouth gluegun.

i thought you were all about the HD280s?

i heard that they are the best for blocking out external noise, -32db of noise cancelling or something.

and personaly, i think they look good, i am not a flashy person, and i don't want reflective junk on my head just so people know i am the DJ.

should i get the senns?

Because they simply didn't work out well in the noisy club that you're using them for! You see, they didn't have an exaggerated enough mid-bass, and when you tried to coax anywhere enough, they distort. And your problem is made worse by that monitor speaker that's blaring at something like 110 to 120dB at your ears. In that case, then nothing besides boomy headphones that ultimately sound really crappy for music listening will do the trick.

Posted by Gluegun on Dec-10-2002 16:29:

Ya... use the right tool for the right job... the 280's are right for MANY MANY jobs, and are inexpensive to boot, but not all.

Posted by JohnSmith on Dec-10-2002 17:34:

Hmm, alright then, good to know.

i think i still want sennheiser 280s though, because i do not spend a lot of time in super noisy clubs, i am mostly a bedroom DJ (or rather dining room in my case) and my speakers rarely go over 100Db.

so, if i want ACCURATE sounding headphones with good isolation, are the sennheisers the cans for the job?

I like to hear my music in as good quality as possible, and i am not wiling to sacrifice sound quality for ease of use in clubs just yet.

maybe when i am, i will buy the technics or pioneers, probably pioneer, because i tried my friens technics1210s and they sounded horrible, the bass is all washed out.

right now, i am using optimus NOV403s, a relatively obscure brand, but i love the sound quality on them, imo they sound better than my friends MDR600s

hi'ya guys - i have the 280's
firstly i use them everyday to listen to music from my copmuter and the sound is crisp and pure, plus the whole sound isolation they create is crazy, i love it. in a club setting yes they do lack and definitly dont deliver as much bass as i would like to have (though i havent noticed any distortion as ShadySlim says), but with some practice i've mastered being able to beat match with the highs and i'd even dare to say it my mixing comes out even more accurate then when i did it according to the low. furthermore, in everyclub i've been to its possible to either turn off or point away the monitor, and mix everything from inside your headphone (using a cue mixer). i actually found they're fit very confortable as the can actually goes around my entire ear and no part of it puts pressure on the lobe - as if my ears are floating around in an air field of sound.

Wonderful! I daresay that you have found what is a much more accurate, comfortable, and most importantly, HEALTHIER to mix!

WEll then, yes yes yes !!!

i have the senn 280's as well. i wholeheartedly recommend them in a studio / bedroom environment, simply because nothing beats accuracy. in a club environment, though, you might get the bass washed out.

this is not a bad thing! it simply means that the hd280's don't have exaggerated bass. in fact the bass is incredibly accurate. you can even hear subbass, something you can't do with any other "dj" headphone. (AFAIK)

i would say mixing with the highs is something to be left for the club. when you're in a quiet environment (i.e. bedroom), then mixing with the lows is the best bet, because you can hear the bass cancelling effect when the beats are just *perfectly* aligned. note that you can only really hear this with 'phones that have accurate bass reproduction (*cough* hd280's *cough*). another good phone for this is the v6.

you might want to eventually have 2 pairs of "working" headphones. one for the studio/bedroom (hd280), and another for the club (your standard, exaggerated bass v700's or most other "dj" headphones will do). but be sure to wear earplugs (or your ears will turn to mush) or if you're good at mixing with the highs, and don't mind the senn's looks, take ur hd280's to the club anyway.

p.s. why do people think they're ugly! i personally find the hd-280's to be very good-looking. i think of them as the prototypical, "big-cup" dj-headphone. those headphones that are being advertised as "dj headphones" are in fact NOT "dj" headphones. rather they're just shiny devices to sell the company name. you can't admit to me with a straight face that the sony mdr-v700's look the way they do because they are "designed for the dj". it is because they are sexy, and that sells.

Posted by JohnSmith on Dec-11-2002 08:10:

Excellent, i am getting some HD280s then.

as for the sonys, yeah, they are sexy, and flashy and that sells.

i prefer muted tones, and subtlety. I will let my tunes do the talking, not my apperance.

Heya, checkout the two links in my signature!! Kickass!!

Posted by JohnSmith on Dec-12-2002 15:34:

well.. this one doesn't speak to high of the sennheiser HD280s, it rates them the 5th out of 5 for both bedroom DJ and Club DJ use.

http://www.geocities.com/magicthyse/djcomp.html

the Technics RPDJ came in first in both situations.. but i tried my friends, and i HATED them..

i went to future shop, and they have i think EVERY kind of sennheiser ever made, except for the HD280s. I ended up getting some crappy panasonics for my girlfriend, cuz she is always wanting to use my DJ cans. the panasonics suck though, i am taking them back tonight

Posted by Omad0n on Dec-13-2002 05:52:

Smiley DJ My 2 cents

I just wanted to say that i have the TechnicsRP-DJ 1200, not the 1210's. And i absolutely love them. They're a great pair of headphones. I'm not sure what may have been up with your friends 1210's. Maybe he jacked em up? maybe the sound just isn't for you. After having used Sony's most popular DJ headphones though, and then these, I promptly took the Sony's back. The bass is very clear in the technics. sorry if I'm rambling.

Steve

Maximum comfort and durability without looking like Princess Leia in Star Wars : Sennheiser HD-25 --> more comfort that you will ever seek....

personally, i have the HD-280s....crispy sounds compared to the Sony Helmet which incidentally i also have....as for bass, it's not that bad, it's just that some people's ear drums are screwed and some are still relatively sensitive......

On that note, buying a pair of headphones is like buying your own undergarments....there is never a comfortable one, but there will always be this pair you like that it wears out first....

Verdict: ask yourself if You treasure your ear drums? If so, go try on a HD-25 and tell me how it feels...it's one of your five senses that you are pleasing....don't skimp on a pair that will last you for years to come...
