How does PVD spin his songs so fast?

I was listening to the live in cream, ibiza set by paul van dyk. When he played Another way towards the end, I noticed that he was playing the song fast......really really fast. I do own a copy of Another way, and I decided to play it the way he did. (the record is 33 1/3 rpm) well, I put the pitch control all the way down, and I noticed that the song wasn't fast enough like PVD played. This time, I ran the record at 45 rpm and put the pitch control all the way up. It was way faster than how PVD played. Does he use a turntable that has like + 10 pitch adjust on it or what? What is his trick????

Many thanks,

Steve

you can adjust a turntable to play faster than it's supposed to, i think technics will go up to 15-20% or so.

or, he might have been playing it on CD, and cd decks sometimes have mass pitch range, like 100%

Sorry to post off topic, but I just saw your sig JohnSmith. LOL! Very good, and true!

hehe.. i follow it religiously too! at least one mix, even if it's just two tracks, EVERY DAY, for the last month or so. my mixing has vastly improved.

depends on which turntables he was using... some decks have up to 10+

Posted by Devbert on Dec-11-2002 22:19:

let all not forget that PVD has his own label and can press tracks however he wants to

Truth, and im sure he was on techs, but for instance my stanton str8-80's can go +12

or stanton str8-100's can go +25 pitch adjust or vestax can go +50!

+50? on a turntable is pretty extreme.

Maybe he was using the pitch shifter on the DJM 500/600?

Posted by bassaholix on Dec-12-2002 12:43:

Hello!

Stoopid idea... OverClocked TT's??? LOL

Posted by mongeone on Dec-13-2002 05:27:

the pitch shifter on the djm500/600.... all that does is change the pitch not the speed of the track!!! so nup cant be that

I would be afraid the record would shoot off into the crowd and kill someone at 50%

A great example of this is Dj Dawn's March Mix in which MARC DAWN - EXPANDER [FLUTLICHT MIX]he plays that at atleast 8% atleast!

At +50% the vocals would chipmunk so much itd be one for the bats and cats!

ITS QUITE SIMPLE. HE TAKES THE PLATTER OFF HIS TECHNICS DECK. UNSCREWS THE COVER THEN ALTER THE INTERNAL PITCH SETTING. ITS MAKES A SL1210 GO UP TO +12. HES DONE IT FOR YEARS. I USED TO TOO. IT TAKES 2 MINS. SO U CAN DO IT WHEN U START YOUR SET BETWEEN RECORDS.

Posted by djdawn on Dec-13-2002 23:12:

it goes beyond +12, my Tech goes to about 15-16%

I know no clue what you mean by this.......platter is the thing that spins around right? (It may sound like I own 1200s....but I do. I'm just really bad at "FIXING UP" things)

Thanks

Steve

how would u guys dance if pvd does not play at a tempo of 140++

Posted by Zain on Dec-22-2002 22:05:

I always have issues with my techs, not being able to play fast enough. This one song, U2- beautiful day (some trance remix), i can never play it because it is too slow. I own tech 1200's. How can i change the pitch. Are there any downsides to this? (Like there is to Overclocking a computer?) Thanks.
