-- is this a virus??

Posted by mr. poopyhead on Dec-11-2002 21:33:

is this a virus??

a bunch of .eml files just showed up all over my computer... they have names like:

fairy.eml
cooking.eml
love.eml
doghouse.eml
animation demo.eml
(some korean words i can't read).eml

this is ridiculous! is this some kind of virus?? i'm trying to delete them all but there are just more and more! anyone else seen this before??

Posted by USMC_Greg on Dec-11-2002 21:36:

a) get back on the hub so I can finish my download

b) you can run an online virus check on your computer at http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Posted by mr. poopyhead on Dec-11-2002 21:39:

ah hhahahaha.. thanks... what was you d/ling?

maybe you wanna wait til i get this thing fixed.. unless you want a virus too, =P

Posted by USMC_Greg on Dec-11-2002 22:16:

hehehe

I was downloading the Urban Train video. :-) I'm pretty sure that you can't give viruses through *mpeg's or *mp3's.

Posted by Tranex02 on Dec-11-2002 22:22:

urban train video! not worth the Dl...unless you like to collect videos like me!

as for the .eml....
those files could belong to a certain program (ex. a photo/animation)
program...???? run a virus scan...obviously...and then try ad-aware for spyware....

Posted by Fir3start3r on Dec-11-2002 23:21:

I'm pretty sure that it is...
*.eml are emails alright...

Just can't remember which one...

Do you have a virus checker w/ current defs?

Posted by mr. poopyhead on Dec-12-2002 00:13:

yeah, i know .eml files are emails... each email has "sample.exe" attached... i didn't open the file of course... i used mcafee with the latest definitions... yep.. each file is a virus. i tried to delete them all, but for some reason i can't... its really bugging me...

i also found a a few .rar files that mcafee identified as the same virus.. weird... i'm pretty sure i got them off the hub now... the hub is EEEEEVIL! =P

sorry to tell you mate, but you are fucked.

.eml files CAN be benign, but yours aren't you are infected.

hit up the symantec website http://www.symantec.com/ and see what you can find out.

BTW, mcaffee sucks as a virus checker, norton is way better.

thanks for the reassurance, haha..

haha. wait.. i'm an idiot... i have have norton, not mcafee, =P... and yeah... norton did all it could.. i'm screwed...

dude viruses can be spread thru anything. Mp3's are very unlikely but the threat is still always there. Which is why i scan everything and anything that makes its way onto my comp..

and as for u mr. poopyhead (lol at ur nick) back up mp3s and vids onto cdr (try not to include exe files, applications, etc. as these could be infected and u dont wanna infect ur cdr's) and format ur comp Then when u got everything set back up, run virus scanner on ur cdr's before transfering data back over

Well...since you mentioned attachments, you're screwed... sorry..

Best thing you could do is get a friend to make up a bootable anti-virus disk and try and clean it up that way.

Trying to clean a computer from an already computer is... as you are seeing... can be futile... (unless you format and start from scratch; I've done that enough times in the past)...

actually there is a fix. Just look up fix nimda in google and im sure you can figure it out from there. There are detailed instructions on the web pages and in the fix program

yeah.. thas the name of the virus, i think.. thanks... before your post, all i could conclude was: "i'm screwed..." =P

What about boot sector virii? Aye, formatting won't do anything for thoes. Just get the latest Norton and go from there.

Posted by mr. poopyhead on Dec-12-2002 04:50:

hehe.. i think i got this thing fixed.. there are a bunch of tools out there that i found that will fix everything with little or no computer knowledge on your part.... i just ran some exe off some anti-virus site and it seemed to fix everything...

i think i'll stay off the hub for a while though, =P

yep, you have caught nimda (admin spelled backwards) one of the most ingenious virii of all time.

however, it's not so bad, it's cleanable, and won't do much damage to your system. like he said, search the net for a fix, it's out there.

BTW for anyone who doesn't know, you can get the latest virus defs for Norton, Trend Micro, McAfee DAT and SuperDAT, and Kaspersky at:

I had this virus.

its fucking annoying too!

It puts eml files with filenames of existing files in every directory on the computer.

It was a bitch to get rid of.

Posted by .montecarlo. on Dec-13-2002 00:55:

I had nimda too, last year. the fix prog worked great... until the whole comp died a week later lol

hopefully you have better luck than me...
