Musical Time Line.
I thought this would be a pretty cool thread to start.. tell me when and what you have been listening to over the years and if your answer is electronica your whole life well thats just bull shit. ill start it off
Ages 1-7 ---
pretty much anything my parents played...or my brother, both my parents listening to pretty much everything from classical to classic rock...my brother was a Miami Bass head with his tricked out mini-truck
ages 8-10 ---
i started defining my self and "playing with the buttons in the car" as my grandfather put it..i ever got some of my first tapes....Phil Collins tape with the song "In the air of the night" Guns and Roses November Rain David Bowey labrinth sound track..I also start playing saxaphone at this time sooo i like kenny G.
ages 11-13---
continued to play sax till i was 13....and begin to enjoy a larger variety of music Tech-master PEB(miami bass) Cynthia- Change on me(80's freestyle), pink floyd, Orbital(my first ever techno CD) and i still listening to a shit load of rock i went to my first concert at 13 to see spacehog.
ages 14-16
I changed what instrument i played at 14 to bassoon and began to enjoy atlot of classical music.. but rock was my mainstay Chilli peppers, Sponge, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, pretty much all new rock.
age 17----
I began to play guitar quiting bassoon to form a band....yet i have refound techno angelmoon- hes all i wanted, grace not over - yet, La rissa -jay and jane, and i dug out my orbital tape that i have had since 92 and began to listen to it, it was da fuqin bomb Halcyon jumps to my Number 1 track..soo i buy the cd..
ages 18-20---
This brings me to my current state of music taste I still play regulary in a rock band with my friends....but in 2000 upon the release of Sasha's GU13 Cd inspires me to start DJing sooo within about 6 months of getting the cd i purchase turntables and a mixer and buy as many of the records on the GU13 album as i can and began to try and mix like him...pretty much been a prossive fan ever since that cd. Nowadays i dj at a few local clubs for fun here in west palm but school prevents me from doing anything serious with it.
peace,
Ages 1-12---
Mainly listened to pop, commercial radio, thats sort of stuff; Fox FM mainly (for those people in Melbourne)
Ages 13-16--
Took the leap into alternative, heavy stuff; Looking back these would have to be the worst years I listened to music, although I thought otherwise at the time. Pantera, Metallica, RATM, Sepultura, you name it, chances are I listened to it. I will never become a constant listener of such rubbish again in my life.
Age 17
Swearing seemed to be "cool" around this time in my life, and ghetto-style rap was the "in" music at my school, so I jumped from the alternative scene to the rap scene. Soon realised that it was mainly tripe so didnt listen to it that much.
Ages 18-Present
Stumbled upon Trance/Dance/House through Darude
.. My friends were still stuck in the above genre's, so I went at it alone, much to their disgust ("it sounds the same, doof, doof etc...")
Still here after 18 months, and I will never look back. I have never found such beautiful music, and I hope that I never will. Trance is harmony to my ears , I love it.
Still find time to listen to some old-skool hip-hop, Jurassic 5, DJ Shadow, that sorta stuff, and occasionally classical music (soundtrack stuff), but my heart belongs to trance, and that is where it will stay!
A friend showed me this website in my first year at UNI, and ive been hooked on it since, ehhe
Ages 1-5: rock a bye baby, whatever my mom sang to me at night
Ages 6-9: nothing...
Ages 10-14: pop on the radio, however my first favourite song was a dance track
Ages 15-17: Alternative, our lady peace, weezer, green day type stuff
Ages 18-present: trance trance and more trance
I never listen to anything else anymore and I don't feel like i'm missing anything.
ages 1-7 : whatever my mom listened to (mainly alot of 80's garbage).
ages 8-15 : discovered & fell in love with hip-hop. Mortal Kombat the movie came out around this time I believe. I went and bought the soundtrack, which set in motion my love for electronic music.
ages 16-20 : Still listening to hip-hop, and my interest in electronic music grew. Listened to a classmates cd one day called fat of the land & became a huge prodigy fan. I then got my first computer. I started downloading techno and trance songs off of mp3.com. Then I somehow discovered the djs john digweed and sasha which sealed my love for trance and other similar genres. Came across photek the same year which introduced me to dnb. Heard my first jungle track from a movie called groove, which blew my mind. Rather than switching between musical styles like most I've accumulated a number of tastes over the years.
ah this is fun...
born 1976...
early 80's listened to my parents stuff... Carole King, The Police, The Rolling Stones, Duran Duran ///"Syncronicity was my favorite album in my youth.
mid 80s dad moved out of the house, and took all the music with him, I started listening to country radio, something about country that just made me feel in touch with nature.
88-92 The Amiga Computer is released, the Turrican game came out and had the first synth tunes that truly moved me. I think the pop songs that stood out in this era were, Nu Shooz - I cant wait, & When in Rome - The Promise... both beautiful tunes. Well the ones that I remember having heard, I only listened to country radio at the time, so I never got too much Top40 exposure. Being a loner for the most part helped distance me away from mainstream music...
92-96 just listened to computer game music/country music.
97 started buying records after hearing some silly anime theme songs.
first record I truly loved was the Pet Shop Boys "Singles Collection" album.. From there I bought all the synth tunes I could find, some I like, some I dont. Discovered the genre trance in 2000 by buying a couple of mixes that I didn't like much, although it had a beat I liked at the time, so I asked this dude online to give me some trance recommendations and he recommended...
Ferry Corsten - Solar Serenades ///
PVD - Out there & Back & //
Paul Okenfold - A Voyage into Trance, which would set off my love for psytrance.
That dude must love that PVD album too, he said the music on that album is sheer class, and it is. I also liked his eurodance recommendations too, euro/freestyle is the only Top40 music I'll listen to besides the odd country tune. Which reminds me, Riding with Private Malone is a great country song.
age 1 - 10 = ahaha pop ^_^
age 11- 12 = Rock= korn, rage against the machine
age 13= hip hop= dr dre
age 14= Rock= Tool, a perfect circle and nine inch nails

12 - 16 ----

i bought my decks at 13 (1995)and i bought my first 12" Nasenbluten - the really nasty violent sex e.p.. and started buying old skool hardcore and uk hard techno records. along with jungle, dutch gabba, and US industrial techno, along with yup. you guessed it. speedcore!...artists include the likes of lenny dee, ruffneck records, cenobyte records, rob gee, delta 9, Disciples of Annihilation (d.o.a), dj skinhead, nasenbluten. then discovered Deathchant records, which i fell in love with, producers like DJ Hellfish, technological terror crew, and DJ Producer
16 - 20 --- now!----
at 16 i got bored bored of ppl hating my music and discovered trance and dance music.... also discovered french disco....i saw stardust - music sounds better with you, on roul records, and went from there.
then 1998, i bought bought stuff like... gouryella - 1998, veracocha - carte blanch, system f - out of the blue etc etc etc...

Born 1981
1981-1988
Absolutely nothing except really background music in 1980's video games.
1988-1993
Again, very little and didn't really care for most music. Mainstream pop mainly, I liked Kylie and Dannii Minogue.
1993-1995
In June 1993 one of my cousins was into what I knew at the time as "Techno" from Germany which was actually the early form of German trance by the likes of Kid Paul, Jam & Spoon, The Visions Of Shiva, Sven Vath etc. I initially didn't like any of this when I first heard it but he gave me a tape and tried to convince me that this was good. After being stuck at him with some shitty weather that summer I decided to have a few listens few the tape and the beautiful sound of what turned out to be The Visions Of Shiva - Perfect Day, Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar (Kid Paul Mix), Humate - Love Stimulation (Lovemix by PvD), Cosmic Baby - Heavens Tears was something I really liked. Living several hundred KM away from my cousins it wasn't easy to see them very often so all I had was this cassette tape with this style of music I really liked which I rather vaguely knew as "techno" and had absolutely nothing else to go on to actually find out what the hell this was, I found myself constantly listening to this tape for months and months. In late 1994, I was looking at electronica albums in a shop when I found a "Logic Trance" compilation in which I was allowed to listen to in the shop, the sound of the music instantly rung a bell and when I heard the Kid Paul Mix of Cafe Del Mar on there I bought it instantly. I searched for more stuff by the artists who had tracks on this CD when and got Cosmic Baby's album "Thinking About Myself" and the track "Fantasia" on it became one of my all time favourites.
1995-1996
By the point of Summer 1995 after hearing Grace - Not Over Yet I started following releases along Paul Oakenfold's Perfecto label and my tastes from listening to the German Trance had broadened towards the UK style trance. I got Transa - Prophase with the X Cabs Remix One in April 1996 and played it literally every day till the Summer. Aged 15, I was speding all the money my mum gave me at the end of the week on CD singles.
1996-1998
Listening to LOTS of UK made Epic Trance/Progressive Trance on the Perfecto, Hooj, Platipus and Xtravaganza labels and buying nearly all the releases on CD. I also liked the more mainstream side of Trance such as "Seven Days & One Week" and "Flash" by BBE.
1998+
Not much has changed, still listening to every style of electronic music I was listening to in the previous years. But those years were really the rise of Dutch and "Anthem" trance when Ferry Corsten and the likes started to really shine in productions. I was also listening to a little bit of this before but not so much. Nowadays I'm finding myself back-collecting more and more old stuff that I missed back in the day as I feel that a lot of Trance they're making now doesn't have the "soul" of the old trance. I'm currrently searching for older Barry Jamieson and Johnathan Sutton aka Evolution and Andy Ling productions. Would also like to hear more stuff from Lee Milleare and John Horrocks aka Amethyst. Though for new stuff I especially like Lemon 8 stuff and the Hemstock & Jennings, Steve Gibbs and Solar Stone trance. I do also like some cheesy vocal trance they're making these days, and am not not afraid to admit it.
Fuck, that took ages.
Don't wanna say the years cause I don't really remember exactly at what age I listened to what
I started developing my own taste at age 12 or 13 I think...
First I listened to alot to dance music,... I remember listening alot to Prodigy, 2 Unlimited, Scooter...
In my school was a big trend for hip-hop but I never really liked it so I listened to a lot of rock at that time, both soft and hard...
likes of: RHCP, Incubus, U2, Nirvana, The Verve.. harder: deftones, Korn (actually I listened to them alot), Coal Chamber, SOAD
When I started high school I began to hang out with potheads and became one too and that was the REAL beginning of my electronica taste... Listened first to alot of trip-hop.. Portishead, Massive Attack, Tricky, Unkle (great while you're high
) also Sneaker Pimps and Zero 7...
I always knew that there was something about trance that really appealed to me I didn't know anyone who could inform me anything about trance music so I checked the internet and guess what I found... tranceaddict.com
and you guys helped me so much in developing my music taste and finding all the classics... (and that's also when I stopped smoking weed so much) Thnks alot fellow TA's
My electronica taste has changed since then and I'm listening almost equally to all the genres inside of dance music: progressive, house, trance, techno little bit of breakz too
I love electronica and I'm never gonna stop listening to it! (I think)
I still like all the other artists I mentioned though and I love to listen to a song I really liked when I was younger, gives me great memories
PS. I'm 18 years old atm
cheers
Born 1982
0-6:
Just stuff that my sister played... 80's music and stuff like that!!!
6-14:
Heavily into classical music... it's all I listened to.
14-18:
Country, pop, metallica, heavy heavy metal, ozzy... and classical still!
18-present:
Was introduced to the vengaboys at a school dance. Then, my friend returned from England with some "dance cd"... and I listened to it... first track I heard = ATB - 9pm. I was completely hooked after that. And I'm still on that course!
