Read This! Black Metal

I'm just curious if any of you guys listen to Black Metal. I know a lot of you guys are from Europe and it's kinda popular there. I listen to it a little bit. And my brother's band pretty much plays only Black Metal. So I'm just curious.

Posted by blazed it on Dec-17-2002 06:10:

what are some black metal groups?

Posted by TrAZ on Dec-17-2002 06:11:

sothis got me hooked on some metal she sent me...forget the names but its good shit

Posted by tranceman78 on Dec-17-2002 06:13:

I got this coffee mug that's made of black metal... and it's like cool and stuff.

Posted by TranceAllstar on Dec-17-2002 06:39:

hrmmm Children of Bodom, Soilwork, Kovenant....I guess they are all black metal, but metal in general is kick ass.....in flames, skyfire, norther, kalmah, stratovarius, nightwish, some cradle of filth? dimmu borgir? etc etc

Posted by sothis on Dec-17-2002 08:27:

soilwork/in flames etc is swedish metal... or melodic death metal. DEFINITELY not black metal.

i am an extreme minority in the black metal "scene" (if there even is one) in the states, because im a girl. in any event, i prefer the more melodic black metal (or poseur shit, as a lot of people call it), like dimmu, agathodaimon, dismal euphony, etc.

i also like a lot of viking/power type metal, like ensiferum, borknagar, etc.

and in general, other bands i like... finntroll (hilarious), satyricon, old man's child, there are too many to name.

of course theres also good swedish/speed metal such as at the gates, in flames, dark tranquillity, strapping young lad... blah blah blah

i like metal.

*turns on more ensiferum*

I don't listen to metal..

..but I like these..

Kittie - Brakish
Mudvayne - Dig
Slipknot - Spit It Out

Black Metal can be good.I like Slayer, since they're more about real aggressive energy rather than the usual darkness/evil-clichs.Also,Norway's own Satyricon is good.We have quite a few good metal bands here in Norway, like Dimmu Borgir or Emperor.

black metal as in Really Heavy Metal...???? what exactly is it?

Posted by DrUg_Tit0 on Dec-17-2002 12:53:

Yes, more or less it's a really heavy metal, but with lot of screaming and bad vocals...Killing chickens and drinking their blood is what most people's stereotype about that kind of metal is
I don't really like black metal tho, because of too much screaming and that sort of non-melodic stuff. Only metal I like is progressive/power metal, like Rhapsody, Blind Guardian, Nightwish, Stratovarius, etc., the kind that goes well with AD&D

WTF??????

Maybe you guys should check out www.blackmetaladdict.com

Its possibly the worst music apart from hip hop/R n B shit.
Any music that is about killing babies and eating your mum just needs erasing from the planet.

Posted by TrAZ on Dec-17-2002 19:29:

hey good thing your open to other kinds of music

actually trance is nothing but the same beat over and over...and trance is absolout horseshit music that wont last

get my point?

how about dont bother posting here?

there are two major extremes to metal.. black metal and death metal. death metal tends to have the super fast bass drum, low guttural vocals, and lyrics related to "i am going to crush your face and skull fuck you and then eat your arms".

black metal is on the other side. it can be speedy as well, but also can be very beautiful and melodic (the kind i like). often it has dark churchy sounding synth stuff in teh background. the vocals are usually on the high end as opposed to the low like death metal. to be honest, they both sound equally as ridiculous, but i prefer black metal anyways ^_^ the lyrics tend to center, for the most part, around worshipping satan. i try to just not read the lyrics

then theres a whole other vein of black metal, sometimes called viking metal, or a few other names.. which focuses a lot on mythology, nothing evil or scary there. ensiferum is funny because all of their songs focus on going into battle or pagan type stuff.

i dunno. its hard to classify. black metal has its own sub genres and categories which make it kind of difficult to give a base explanation. usually tho, unless youve been exposed to it or some other extreme form of metal in the past, you wont like it.. until it grows on you ^_^

I think that sounds more like doom metal.

I wouldn't classify viking metal/power metal as a sub-genre of black metal because it is so much different. The vocals are within normal spectrum of a human voice, for a change, and it sounds much more happier, it's like music to lift morale before a grand fight. Much closer to gothic metal, I believe

Posted by biznology on Dec-17-2002 20:24:

arent most of those bands scandinavian? whats up with that? i know a kid that loves black metal, but i was almost afraid to ask him what the deal was - so thanks sothis!

he said that Ub Devoid wasnt dark enough for him, so i let it be at that|

Posted by Fandom on Dec-17-2002 20:41:

Most of metal is good music and as always i agree with soth(hello there!),melody in metal is massive.
I enjoy Blind Guardian a lot(they kick) on power metal, but on the topic(black) i like Dimmu(Enthroned Darkness Triumphant, what an album!),Emperor(some) and many more, ahh cant seem to remember now!
Maybe i'll post later if i find the time!

yea, i dunno... metal is a big genre problem because theres so many and they are all kinda similar ^_^, so everyone will have a different opinion i suppose.. i was just trying to give a general statement.

i dont really agree with this. dimmu borgir is a good example. i dont know anyone who considers it anything other than "black metal".. yet it is exactly what i described here. same with agathodaimon, dismal euphony, etc.

In the uk it's popular with 8 year olds, not with many other people

Posted by torontotrance on Dec-17-2002 22:47:

about damn time I weighed in on this subject. As sothis well knows, i hate metal in general and probably because my brother plays it 24/7 very loud and probably because I never got the point but then again..i have my own stuff that my brother probably hates....so whatever I guess.
