-- worst DJ experience...
Pages (2): [1] 2 »
ima newbie at djing, and im bored. this thread should nice, but i just wanna know what's your worst experience as a DJ.
I don't know if they were the worst experiences that I've had DJing but there are a couple of frightening moments that I remember real well. One was when I playing at one of the biggest clubs in L.A. (at that time). It was my first night playing there and it was about 5 minutes before they opened. Just as they were about to open the doors to let the line of people in that were waiting outside, I was up in the booth, cueing up my first record and one of the bartenders came up to ask me a question. As I turned around to answer him, I somehow snagged the wire on my headphones (which were on my head) and ripped the wires right out of my headphones. So there I am with no headphones and they're starting to let people in. I was in a panic. As it ended up, someone went to get me another set of headphones that lived close by which only took about 20 minutes. In the meantime, the first few songs I played, I made sure they were songs with cold endings so it all worked out ok.
Another time that I can think of was when I was playing, the place was packed. I put on a fairly long song and went downstairs to get a cocktail. Just as I turned around to head back up to the booth, the record started skipping.
It was so crowded that I couldn't get through all the people to get back up to the booth. Lucky for me that the skip in the record just happened to be right on beat so it sounded like a loop.
Well...that's just a couple of scarey moments that I've had and there are many more besides those.
Making a flawless mix, while completely drunk nonetheless, and then taking the wrong record off. Oops!
LOL ....doesn't that just suck! The first time I did that, I froze for about 15-20 seconds. I couldn't believe I had done that. It's quite a shock when the music suddenly stops like that, huh?
Yeah, I was a little slow to realize what I had done too, but I wouldn't contribute it to shock. Most people laughed cause they saw the look of complete confusion on my face, and then the stupid grin when I realized what I had done. Alcohol is a bitch, stay away from it girls and boys. At least when you have to operate heavy machinery or spin.
Another fun one is when you take off a record and put it in the cover of the record that you just put on and continue to do that for a while. Then the next night when your record is running out, you go to grab a song and....none of your records are in the right cover!! OH NO!!!!
Well, I can add a little to this thread.
I guess everybody had the problem with taking the wrong record off when in a hurry.
Another thing that happened a couple of times was broken monitor speakers. Not my fault, but my problem. Because nobody in the crowd knows you're playing with no monitor. F***ing sucks!
At Loveparade last year, one guy reached over my decks and pushed the needle off the record twice in 10 min.
And one time I played in a club where the PA is just way too large. They had no limiter or anything and the master volume on the Pioneer Mixer was at 3 (of 10). After a mix I turned to my record bag and accidentaly touched the master volume and turned it to 0. Everybody was looking at me and I wanted to get the music going quickly so I turned the volume up all the way cause I forgot it was only set to 3.
Blew everybody AWAY !!!
But I guess you have to live with stuff like that...it's part of the job, and I love it...
there was this one show i was spinning at, my very first one too
and about halfway through, everything went dead
it turns out that a lot of the stuff i was using was hooked into the same breaker
i just stood there in utter confusion, thinking i had hit something, when about a couple of minutes later, everything came back on, thanks to someone running and resetting the breaker
it was scary, because my lightshow, my sound system, everything was dead
my lightguy was running around checking all the power cords, it was funny after though
and removing the wrong song has happened a couple of times to me already
Twice in 10 minutes, huh? OUCH! What sucks also is when you're right in the middle of a mix and some idiot tries to pull your headphones off so they can request a song. That has happened many times.(and usually the song they request is something you played about 2 songs ago).
Well, at least we can all laugh at these things later, huh?
me too..
i took the wrong record off once..
that was very bad..
actually i pulled the record back and thought it was the right record to pull off.. then the sound just went off.. and i was like .. "oh shit".
mine was 2 days ago haha my first gig ok i was the last to perform so when the last band played i went on then all of a sudden i play my first record and bam! every1 left so i was spinnin to no1 just my 4 friends who were helpingme out every1 else left i swear to god i was pissed....I WILL NEVER PERFORM AT A SKOOL MUSIC FESTIVAL AGAIN!! hehe it suCkED
well, it's quite often when the records skip...
the thing that really drove me nuts was when the set was played in the street and there was no light around the booth... the mixer wasn't mine either. so trying to locate the knob i needed, i often touched the wrong knob.
the other thing: i was "in da mix" close to the point where the breakdown of the incoming song comes in... so i prepare to slide xfader to the incoming song. while doing that, i wave my hands, cry out things and try to have some fun. at the moment when i should slide the x-fader, i , of course, forget in which direction i should do it and bring the outcoming song back. it sucked.
but when the crowd doesn't show its irritation, everything's fine. the really scary thing for me is when they start to boo you. thank godness didn't happen to me yet.
My worst experience was when I was opening up for Jon the Dentist here in Buffalo. Everything was going well, the crowd was going nuts...it was packed...I was soooooo into the whole atmosphere. As I was cueing up my next record, I went to go pick the needle up off the record and bring it back to the beginning to wait to throw it in. I picked up the wrong needle, the sound cut...I looked up...said "oh shit" and then threw it back down and everyone just kept going. Hehehe....only those right up by the decks knew what happened so it was alright...haha.
Steve
I don't know if I'd rate it in the worst experiences but another thing I used to hate was when I would be playing somewhere and taping the evening and everything would be going real good....and right in the middle of a killer set, the owner or manager of the club would walk up and ask me to make an announcement....usualy something real stupid like "Would the owner of the white Toyota please move your car...you're blocking someone in." It always seem to happen when I was recording the evening, too. I don't know, some DJs seem to like to get on that old microphone and yak away.....I never really did like having to make announcements....even last call....but ya gotta do what ya gotta do, I guess.
ahh youre all rookies when it comes to worst experiences, check this out, my first set, cpl yrs back, small club, 30 ppl, all friends... anyhow, i dropped e 2 hrs before my set, and i felt nothing, i go up to start my set, first record, i start rushing like crazy, first 4-5 mixes, disasterous
one train wreck after another lol, but it was cool after that, everyone there was fucked so they didn't mind... i still drop ocasionally when i spin... anyone else drop?
No, it totally fucks my concentration because I get carried away with other stuff, thus no paying attention to the task at hand. Drinking on the other hand....Red Bull and Vodka....
true, concentration is fucked, but i dunno, i get to enjoy my set more and i feel i have a better set than when im sober... and i rarely drink...
i dropped once while spinning
i was playing this new years party, and i dropped two hit a little bit b4 my set, by the time i came up to play, i was rolling hardcore
my set was all hard trance and house, and it kept getting deeper, b4 my second last mix, i was so into it, i was running around and huggin the speakers
anywho, the moral of the story is...
damn, i forgot
now i only drink REV when spinning
Mine was I was opening up at a small gig one time not many people it was ummer last year the floor filled as I dropped each record and things were going like a dream i played Dj Hitch Hiker Presents Lunatic Asylum Cabal Energy flow the tiesto remix and as soon as it hit the breakdown all was looking cool, so I got cocky and danced around, and as soon as the track kicks back in I went a little too crazy and ended up hitting the arm causing the record to skip badly! and I've never been so embrassed in my whole life! everybody turned to see me freze on the spot with a red face never agin will I jump around like a twat while playing!

HA HA HA HA
I have had a really good laugh reading everybodys most embarrassing experience as a Dj
he he he @ you guys.
I have only been DJing at a few private parties and one bigger out in the woods kinda party but I havent failed any yet *phuu* . People whos not in to mixing music (like the crowd) usually never hear when the Dj plays wrong or make a bad mix

c-ya
hahaha... damn... i would never try to roll and mix
i just cant imagine how insane that would be

Hehehe. Try to top this one. hehehe.
At a party, I came up after a breakbeat DJ.
2 minutes into the first song, some dude raised up the sign "Say no to Trance." The promoter promptly dragged the kid out to the back. I, on the other hand, rocked the party. LoL
I had a nasty one here in Toronto recently. I was in a club in town, doing the lights in the DJ booth chatting away to the DJ. He knows I spin myself , so halfway though the night and when the club is most packed, he wants to go do something (with a ladyfreind!!), and says "take the next few mixes for me..i'll be back soon" at which point he immediatly disappears, leaving me in front of three decks, 12 channel mixer, two cd decks, a bungle monitoring system and about a thousand people. I get to work, look down at the record playing and there is less than a centimeter left(!!!) and the next track isnt beat matched (!!). I just get it matched up and I'm about to bring it straight in and at that exact moment, a (dumb) girl in front of the booth(on the dancfloor) puts her arm in the air and without looking accidentally slams her glass down on the record, spilling the entire contents (ice 'n all) over the choon. I am pissed off hard, pick up the record (still with ice on it) and fling all the spillage right back at her. I throw the track back on and manage a v. dodgy mix. Not fun, but it made me laugh after.
