Mauro Picotto(Techno??)

Hey all,
I found this review of an upcoming Picotto gig in a dublin club listings magazine. Just wondering what everyone thinks of him at the moment and his apparent conversion to techno? Personally i was never really a big fans of his but for some strange reason he's very well liked here in ireland? This mags a fairly no holds barred one btw.

Mauro Picotto
Saturday 21 December, Venue-Temple Theatre

Apparently this is going to be Mauro Picotto's last ever appearance as a trance DJ. After that he's switching to techno, where he will presumably be met by a lot of confused idiots chinstroking themselves to death as they try to figure out what the fuck is going on.

Because over the last couple of years Picotto has achieved a level of popularity(in Ireland especially) that long ago surpassed the limits of what is considered polite in techno society. What's more, he has done it by playing appallingly unfashionable music(hard trance) in a Dublin Venue(the temple theatre) that is about as respectable as anal sex with the family dog.

There are those who would argue that the trance masses have made picotto Irelands favourite International DJ,seeing off the likes of Carl Cox and Judge Jules. Singles like Komodo and Lizard lurked in the upper regions of the Irish chart for an indecent amount of time, and those who look old enough to get into clubs routinely pack out every gig he plays.

So is Picotto committing career suicide by ditching the melodic, muscular trance that made him a superstar? In a word, yes. As mentioned above, techno purists will be waiting to spit all over whatever he does in their precious genre while the chances of his current following going with him into baldieville seem slim enough.

The whole thing makes a bit of a mockery of the boundaries that music fans like to set up between each other. Picotto has actually been drifting towards techno for quite a while. His current sets are chock-full of the likes of Dave Clarke and Chris Leibing as they are with white labels from his BXR stablemates. But this publicly pronounced move is certain to alienate his loyal fanbase. With six more major UK dates between this one and the end of the year, you'll have to wonder if it'll be up-yours techno all night at those gigs? For tonight, its best to expect BXR favourites from the man himself, his engineer Ricky Effe(playing live) and the new pretender to the BXR throne, Belgium's M.I.K.E.

Posted by danceaddict on Dec-17-2002 23:48:

The only trance set I heard from him was at Trance Energy in the begin of the year 2001. He spinned tracks like Komodo and those things..

Funny that you mention Picotto and his style now because I was reading a thread on discogs.com today and there I saw this post from a guy who said:
"i love how some fucking idiots called that asshole picotto techno. whatta fuckin joke."
which surprised me because I always thought he spun techno... anyways here is the thread: http://www.discogs.com/forums/topic/4583

Picotto is playing techno as long as i know him. I never heard him spin a trance-only set. If they had trance influence then it would be tech trance. But now hes the technoking . I love him!!

GREETZ!!

picotto has been playing techno for a _long_time_ now.. even when he had his full trance influence (the album) it was still hardtrance.

Posted by dj cuttof on Dec-18-2002 02:42:

HAHAHA FIRST OF ALL, PICOTTO DO NOT, AND DID'NT PLAY HARDTRANCE (NEVER), AND HE WONT

Picotto since i know him, like 3 years ago, always been playing techno, sometimes trance yeah, but not to call him trance dj' what? 1 maybe 2 trance tunes ,in 1 night, and that was a few years' ago, but he does'n play trance anymore, and he does'nt produce it. HE'S AN AMAZING TECHNO DJ,one of my favorites, cause he's very original ...... so please? Trance dj? Hardtrance? WTF??????

Posted by Spin Doctor on Dec-18-2002 14:13:

Techno? Trance? Who cares! If you like what he plays, good shut up and dance, if you dont go somewhere else.

Posted by Nrg2Nfinit on Dec-18-2002 14:23:

Yes picotto does produce some trance.. its true.. he maily produces techno tho

he produces and rexmies alot of trance under the alias CRW

and crw feat veronica precious life is fairly new

so im pretty sure he hasnt abandoned trance

Mauro is a very talented producer.. he can produce incredible trance and techno.. so i wouldnt say he is just techno.. but no question about it .. techno is his forte no pun intended

Posted by Prototrance on Dec-18-2002 18:02:

I always classed Mr Picotto as a techno Dj/producer anyway.
But he does really have his own style of techno within the genre.

Nope. It's true. Tekno and techno are two different styles. Tekno is a very hard underground sub-genre of techno. It's more likely to be hardcore than techno. Techno is more or less 'easy to listen to'. It has a way more sophisticated sound than tekno. Techno is more for the masses, while tekno is for the underground (don't take that literally please!).

so u're saying that hard techno should be called tekno? that is the second stupidest thing i've read in a while... are u sure your country is not the only place where these two words are distinguished?? as i see it, tekno is just a piece of slang used to simplify spelling. techno is prounced "tekno" so it's just an 31337 way of spelling "techno" and i'm pretty sure 99% of people who say "tekno" have never thought of implying "a very hard underground sub-genre of techno"
